After the success of the NES Mini, it was predicted that Nintendo would launch an SNES Mini using the same concept. In less than a year, those rumors have become reality and the console has already been officially put on sale, accompanied by a box that imitates that of a Super Nintendo and with the novelty of including two controllers instead of just one as happened with the NES mini.

For those who don't know, SNES Mini is a small console that includes a selection of Super Nintendo games. The main attraction of this product is being able to play those games on a flat screen and being able to record the game at any time using Save States (or suspend points) like in any emulator.

Original SNES next to a Mini SNES

This time we have 3 different models: the Japanese, the European and the American. The Japanese and the European one share aesthetics (just as happened with the original SNES) while the American one has its particular blocky design. As far as the games are concerned, we find that the European and American versions have exactly the same games (which is curious because several of the games included were not released in Europe at the time) while the Japanese model includes some different games.

In America the SNES Mini is sold with the design that the American SNES had

The idea of this article is not to talk about the SNES Mini itself, but to take a look at the 21 games included, so here I go:

Contra III – The Alien Wars

Launched in Europe under the name Super Probotector – The Alien Rebels (due to German censorship) and changing human soldiers for robots. We are facing a difficult action game for 1 or 2 players where we will not have a second of rest from our enemies. The first levels are accessible, but then things get very ugly, and if you want to see the true ending of the game you will have to complete it on the highest difficulty level.

Donkey Kong Country

The game that brought the veteran Donkey Kong back to popularity and at the same time totally reinvented its story. Despite the great level design, the incredible music and the enormous number of secrets, which made Donkey Kong Country What caught the attention was its appearance, created based on pre-rendered graphics that gave a three-dimensional sensation. Today it's not that surprising, but it's still an excellent game.

Earthbound

Although this saga (known there as Mother) was successful in Japan, in the West this game was launched and it failed completely in sales. It is true that when it was launched Earthbound There were many more striking RPGs for SNES but it is also true that this game is something different within the conventions of the moment. Its story tells us about an alien invasion in the present (that is, the 90s) and our protagonists are children who will have to muster up the courage to try to stop it. Beyond its story, the game adds curious concepts such as that if we do not talk to the protagonist's parents he will feel sorry and will not concentrate on the fighting or that part of the events in the game are based on real events that went around the world in those years (cases of corruption in high positions, police brutality, sects that abused minors, chemical attacks in the subway in Japan). Despite its childish appearance, this game (and its entire saga) hides a scathing criticism of real society.

Final Fantasy III

Don't let the title fool you, Final Fantasy III is actually Final Fantasy VI, but in SNES Mini the name they gave it in North America has been respected (being the third final fantasy who arrived in that territory they changed his number). We are faced with a game that has been considered by many as the best Super Nintendo RPG and also as the best final fantasy of everyone and for that reason alone you can already get the idea of how important this game is, which in addition to offering us a very interesting story, has an excellent technical section and an exemplary duration.

F-Zero

One of the Super Nintendo launch games and the first episode of the legendary hyper-speed racing saga. It does not have a two-player mode but it does offer us a large number of tracks for one player, as well as four pilots with totally different ships. It's difficult and addictive.

Kirby Super Star

Also known as Kirby's Fun Pack, is a Kirby game that includes several different games, some of them mini-games and others full games. Kirby's Super Star It represents everything that Kirby is very well, with fun graphics and a great sense of humor. Although most games are platform games, it provides some variety with the mini-games (such as the duel or the race against Dedede).

Kirby's Dream Course

I have to admit that I am surprised to find this game on the SNES Mini, not because it is a bad game (which it is not) but because it is not a game that was excessively popular in its day. In any case Kirby's Dream Course It brings variety to the SNES Mini selection, as it is a kind of golf game with characters from the Kirby universe. It's a little weird, but also very addictive.

I already talked at length about this game in this article, but if I had to summarize it I would say that it is the natural evolution of the first Zelda, with additions from the second (the magic bar, the towns) and all of this well mixed with new elements and a very interesting story. Special mention for the dungeons, which in addition to being very numerous are huge, complex and several stories high.

Megaman

After 6 games on NES, Megaman made the jump to SNES in the form of a new saga within the franchise. Megaman In this game we will control X who will have to prevent the robot revolution against humans, eliminating some of the most dangerous ones and their commander.

Secret of Mana

Another famous SNES RPG, but this one has the peculiarity of being an Action RPG (moving away from the turns of final fantasy) and up to 3 players can play at the same time (obviously, on SNES Mini there will only be two). It is true that its sequel is better, but even so we should not underestimate this installment of the “Mana” saga, which after all is also from Square, which gave the best of the RPG genre in the 90s.

StarFox

Game that attracted attention for using the FX Chip so that the Super Nintendo could move polygons and create a three-dimensional environment. It is a ship shooter that has not stood the test of time as well as the rest of the games, but it is still interesting and fun to play, and it is also the birth of Fox McCloud and company.

StarFox 2

After the success of StarFox, the release of a sequel was somewhat foreseeable, the game was almost completely developed, but was never released due to the proximity of the Nintendo 64 and because they wanted to create a new StarFox for that console. The dubious (but common) decision to leave the game unreleased, despite being practically completed, has made this game the big surprise of the SNES Mini, since we are faced with a game that never officially appeared on the Super Nintendo.

Street Fighter II Turbo

Super Mario World

Super Punch-Out!

Yoshi's Island – Super Mario World 2

[Article] SNES Mini games

[Article] SNES Mini games
