toho, the company that created and owns the rights togodzilla, never misses an opportunity to release films about his character to the point of saturating the public, after which he must let him rest for a season, until his fans miss him.

Sometimes, during this hiatus, the Japanese production company licenses the character to Western film studios so that they can make their version of the monster, in the hope that their product will be successful or, at least, that these studios will invest a large sum of money in advertising (something that Toho never does), so that their character will once again be in the public spotlight, and thus take advantage of the moment to launch a new Japanese Godzilla film.

There are a few American Godzillas, like the one from Hanna-Barbera, the one from comics (with different companies behind it, such as Marvel, IDW or Dark Horse) and of course those from feature films:godzilla(1998) and the current Godzilla of the “monsterverse”, who has appeared ingodzilla(2014),Godzilla Vs Kong(2021) andGodzilla VS Kong the new empire(2024).

Aftergodzilla(1998) Toho releasedGodzilla Millennium(1999), aftergodzilla(2014), premieredShin Godzilla(2016) and, after the new filmGodzilla Vs Kong, coinciding with the character's 70th anniversary, has launchedGodzilla Minus Onein 2023.

Godzilla moviesThey can be separated with some ease between those that are serious and critical and those that are more committed to action and entertainment.. The American vision of the monster tends to focus more on the entertainment side, whilethe Japanese woman dances from one category to another, depending on the moment (and some of his films were caught between both categories).

Although the Godzilla of the “Monsterverse” began with a serious, solemn and even boring tone, it quickly moved to the side of exaggerated entertainment withGodzilla Vs Kongand its sequel, making it clear that Americans feel more comfortable working with the character that way. For their part, the Japanese balanced the balance by releasing two of the most serious and dramatic films about the character:Shin GodzillaandGodzilla Minus One(this last one being the one I am going to comment on below.

The film takes us to the end of World War II, when a pilot (Koichi Shikishima) lands on Odo Island to have his plane inspected, because due to its unfortunate state,He has not been able to fulfill his mission as a Kamikaze pilot. The mechanics (led by Sosaku Tachibana) check their vehicle and find no fault, after which they realize that Koichi,In reality he faked the breakdowns because he didn't want to kill himself.

That same night,A huge creature that looks similar to a dinosaur appears on the Island and begins to attack the mechanics.. Tachibana asks Koichi to use his plane's machine gun to attack the monster, but it, completely frozen with fear,flees, leaving the mechanics to their fate. The next day, Koichi discovers that everyone has died, except Tachibana, who blames him for the deaths of his comrades. At the same time, Japan surrenders in World War II and our protagonist returns home, to discover thateverything has been devastated by American bombings. His neighbor does not hesitate to remind him that perhaps, if he had fulfilled his mission as a Kamikaze, Japan would have won the war.

Koichi, full of guilt, wanders through the remains of Japan, until he crosses paths with Noriko, a woman persecuted for stealing food, whotakes care of her baby to escape more easily from her pursuers. Koichi manages to meet her again and discovers that the baby is not his, but she adopted him when the mother died in the bombings. Finally,Koichi, Noriko, and the baby girl (Akiko) end up living together in the ruins of Koichi's house..

Time passes andKoichi gets a job defusing sea mines, where he will share a ship with the Captain (a man critical of the Japanese Government), Doc (a former weapons developer) and the child (a boy, who could not participate in the war and feels guilty about it). His work defusing mines will allow Koichi to improve his home, allowing Noriko and Akiko to live in better conditions.Despite his new life, with friends and family, Koichi is unable to overcome his guilt and continues to have night terrors..

On one occasion, the crew is sent to a point wherea huge American ship has been shot down by something unknown. Shortly after, the person responsible appears,el mismo monstruoque Koichi vio en la isla donde le iban a reparar el avión,pero muchísimo más grande y poderoso. El pequeño barco no tiene ninguna posibilidad de atacar a Godzilla, pero aun así logra introducirle una mina en la boca y hacerla detonar, lo cual demuestra que es casi imposible matarlo, puesregenera las heridas con suma velocidad. La aparición de un enorme barco de guerra, salva al pequeño barco desactivador de minas, siendo sus cuatro tripulantes los únicos supervivientes al suceso.

El monstruo es un secreto y no se puede hablar de él, pero eso poco importa, pues poco después aparece en tierra firme para arrasar una ciudad. El gobierno norteamericano prefiere no movilizarse contra él, pues considera que su prioridad es concentrarse en su enemigo (la Unión Soviética).Los ciudadanos japoneses quedan abandonados a su suerte, pues deben enfrentarse al monstruo sin apoyo de su gobierno y sin ayuda externa.

Godzilla Minus OneIt's a movie thatvuelve a las raíces del personaje, con un tono y época muy cercanos a la primera aparición del personaje en 1954,pero también tiene pinceladas a algunas películas más recientes(como el Godzillasaurio o la regeneración de Godzilla).

La parte de drama está muy lograda(mejor incluso que en la película de 1954), y es que poner como protagonista aun kamikaze con el síndrome del superviviente, es un punto de partida bastante bueno. Lascríticasde algunos personajes japoneses (como el capitán)sobre cómo su país trata a la genteno son únicas en la franquicia, pero creo quenunca se habían dicho de manera más clara.

Godzilla es presentado comouna catástrofe ambulante, imparable e indestructible. Sin duda es la mejor manera de mostrarlo, aunque eso obliga a que solo aparezca con ese fin y no puedes crear una historia en base a él. Afortunadamente,el hecho de que el protagonista sea interesante hace que ese uso de Godzilla sea perfecto. Esta película ganó un Oscar por los efectos especiales, que son muy buenos, pero lo que más sorprende es que el presupuesto total de la película fuese de poco más de 10 millones de dólares.

La parte que más me gusta es cuando Koichi empieza a trabajar en el barco desactivando minas y hace “nuevos amigos”. Es ahí también cuando sueña con tener una vida normal y justo es cuando la película le golpea más duro. La parte final, con los ciudadanos de Japón creando un plan disparatado, a la par que extremadamente original y llevándolo a cabo, me parece de lo más disfrutable de la película, ya quete mantiene en vilo hasta el final(en ese sentido, me recuerda mucho a lo que sucede en la parte final deShin Godzilla).

En términos generales, tenemos una película de Godzilla queno requiere conocer nada del personaje, que reutiliza conceptos de películas anteriores y al mismo tiempo nos ofrece algo fresco y entretenido.Junto conShin Godzilla, de lo mejor que he visto del personaje en muchos años.

Curiosidades de Godzilla Minus One

• Gared Edwars (director de Godzilla 2014) expresó envidia al ver esta película y declaró que “así es como debería ser una película de Godzilla”
• El “Minus One” (menos uno) del título se refiere a que Japón ya ha sido arrasado por la guerra (por lo tanto, llevado al punto 0) y la aparición de Godzilla los lleva incluso a una situación peor (el -1).
• La mancha que tiene Noriko en el cuello es similar a la que sufrieron personas que enfermaron por la radiación de las bombas atómicas lanzadas en Hiroshima y Nagasaki
• El director de esta película mencionó que una de sus favoritas es GMK (Godzilla-Mothra-King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack) del 2001, y eso se nota, porque la última escena de esta película recuerda mucho al final de aquella.
• El avión que aparece en la parte final de la película existió de verdad. Fue diseñado por el comandante Masayoshi Tsuruno en 1943. Se crearon dos prototipos entre 1944 y 1945, uno de ellos fue completado y llego a hacer un par de viajes de prueba. En 1945 fue reclamado y desmantelado por Estados Unidos, pero años más tarde se rearmó para mostrarlo en el National Air and Space Museum de Washington.
