[HorrorScience] Godzilla VS Kong (2021)

2020 affected movie theaters significantly, as many films did not have the expected results due to restrictions, which significantly affected their collection. In 2021, that effect was still noticeable. However, some films were a surprise, grossing much of what was expected, and one of the most notable wasGodzilla Vs Kong.

I have already talked in previous articles about the films ofKong and Godzilla. They are characters known to everyone, so I don't think it's worth going into detail about that. However, I would like to comment that when I first saw the 1962 film, King Kong Vs Godzilla,I was hugely disappointed, because it broke with the seriousness of both characters in a notable way, making them seem like two children fighting in a park. Neither the special effects nor the story were better than what was seen in the previous films of both characters (in part, because it was the first color film of both, which made the effects look much worse). That movie was a huge box office hit, a lot of people love it, but for me, it's always been a disappointment.

By the time Legendary Pictures started making movies to bring back King Kong (withKong: Skull Islandin 2017) and Godzilla (withgodzillain 2014 andGodzilla King of the Monstersin 2019) a new version of the confrontation seemed inevitable, since the greatest difficulty (that a single company obtained the rights to both characters at the same time) had already been overcome.

The new movie would be calledGodzilla Vs Kong(thus avoiding us confusing it with the previous one) and it was the one that made me return to the cinema after a long season. I didn't have many expectations, since Legendary's Monsterverse movies have left me with different and not always good impressions.

The first scenes show us Kong living peacefully in an environment that seems natural, but is artificial, as he is contained in a kind of dome to keep him under control created by Monarch, the company that contained and studied the Titans in the previous film. During her imprisonment, Jia (a mute girl, who appears to be the sole survivor of a Skull Island tribe) communicates with Kong using sign language, telling her adoptive mother (Dr. Ilene Andrews) thatKong is sad and needs to return home as soon as possible.. Unfortunately, Kong's caretakers know that, the moment they take him out of the dome, Godzilla will go after him to subdue or kill him, as he did with the rest of the titans inGodzilla: King of the Monsters.

For its part,Godzilla is in the news for brutally destroying cities, behavior that he had not had for years, which surprises his defenders, since generally the monster only acted with such violence in the presence of another giant monster. Coincidentally, the areas devastated by the radioactive saurian contain facilities of a company calledApex, in which there is an insider named Bernie, who is dedicated to commenting on a podcast about everything strange he sees within the company (plus a lot of really stupid paranoid conspiracies). Madison Russel, (daughter of Emma Russel, the one responsible for freeing the titans in the previous film) is a follower of Bernie's podcast and decides to go find him with the help of her friend Josh.

The president of Apex and his trusted man (Ren Serizawa) convince Dr Nathan Lind (a Hollow Earth scholar) that the best solution for Kong is to return him to it, since according to studies, that is most likely his origin. Besides,If Kong guides them to the hollow Earth, they will be able to find an energy source powerful enough to eliminate Godzilla..

Kong is transported by sea through Godzilla's non-territorial waters to avoid any confrontation, but a collision between the two titans is inevitable.Godzilla appears and destroys the fleet of ships protecting Kong and then confronts the ape, who is surpassed by the saurian in aquatic combat.. Finally, both the scientists and Kong understand that the only solution to avoid total destruction is for Kong to surrender to Godzilla, as the other titans did in the previous film, which the great ape does.

The rest of the trip is done by transporting Kong by air, thus avoiding the appearance of Godzilla. Once inside one of the entrances to the Hollow Earth, Kong begins to advance and the scientists follow him with the special vehicles that Apex has created, which manage to solve the main problem of entering the Hollow Earth (the sudden change in pressure in seconds).Inside the Hollow Earth they observe that there is a world similar to Skull Island, full of monsters of different types, where Kong feels at home (and does not hesitate to tear apart and eat whoever comes his way). Kong's exploration of this new home takes him to a kind of sanctuary that seems to belong to his ancestors, where he not only finds statues and a throne, but also a battle ax created from one of the dorsal fins of a Godzilla-like monster.That same area is where the energy that Apex was looking for is concentrated.and they decide to extract a sample and send it to scientists on the surface to recreate it. Godzilla, despite being on the surface, is aware that something is wrong and decides to use his atomic breath to pierce the earth from the surface to its core, opening the way between both sides, so that Kong, now armed with his ax, can confront him again.

The new battle between the two titans, this time on dry land, makes them both give their bestand Kong's ability to handle his new weapon (capable of stopping and recharging with Godzilla's atomic breath) and the environment, equal the balance of a night combat illuminated by the Neon lights of Hong Kong buildings.

Although Kong begins the fight with force and manages to push Godzilla back,The radioactive saurian ends up overwhelmingly prevailing, leaving Kong completely defeated and struggling to breathe.. Little Jia knows that Kong is going to die and explains the situation to Illene and Nathan, who decide to use one of the ships that Apex had lent them to travel to the Hollow Earth to revive him before it is too late.

For his part, Godzilla feels victorious until a huge robot with a shape similar to his enters the scene. ThisMechaGodzillaIt is the mystery that Bernie was investigating in Apex and was what the energy source found in the Hollow Earth needed. In addition, it is controlled by Ren Serizawa, but when adding the new energy the pilot loses control of the robot and it begins to act on its own.

The beating that Godzilla takes against his mechanical double is epic and only Kong's intervention prevents the fight from ending badly for him.. Mechagodzilla seems to be able to handle both monsters without a problem, but the moment they start to cooperate his chances of defeating them disappear and he ends up completely chopped up. After the battle, Kong and Godzilla still feel anger towards each other, but they both finally decide to let it be.

Kong is returned to the Hollow Earth where he will live peacefully (monitored by Monarch surveillance posts) and Godzilla will return to the sea until he feels like fighting again.

At this point, Legendary's Monsterverse would have already featured Kong and Godzilla with solo films and a crossover between the two was inevitable, both story-wise and financially-wise, so when it was announcedGodzilla VS KongI just hoped it would be better than the original version from the 60s, which despite being an extremely high-grossing film (especially in Japan), I never liked.

So when it comes to evaluating the film I am going to do it in two parts, on the one hand the part about monsters and on the other hand the part about humans.

La parte de monstruos es impresionante, no solo por lo bien hechos que están en términos generales. Kong se presenta como un acróbata con una gran capacidad de improvisar usando su entorno, mientras que Godzilla es un tanque, enorme, lento, imparable y notablemente más poderoso que su rival.

La primera pelea entre ambos rompe un par de reglas no escritas, pues no sucede durante la noche o durante una tormenta o algo similar (recurso usado habitualmente para facilitar el trabajo de los de efectos especiales), si no que sucede con claridad y encima es una pelea acuática (lo cual nos ofrece algunas escenas muy originales). Pese a que la pelea es bastante interesante, si hubiese sido el único enfrentamiento entre ambos en la película, habría sido un tanto decepcionante, pues Kong está en clara desventaja.

La segunda pelea, en Hong Kong, sucede de noche, pero gracias a los efectos de las luces de neón de la ciudad, el resultado es muy satisfactorio e impresionante. Aquí Kong se luce en acrobacia, pero Godzilla no se queda atrás y va usando un recurso tras otro (llegando incluso a quitarle el hacha a Kong). Esta pelea es increíblemente satisfactoria para ambos personajes y aunque parezca que Kong tiene posibilidades, el resultado del combate será poco favorable para él.

El director de la película dijo quequedaría claro cuál de los dos monstruos es más poderoso, cosa que cumplió, pues Godzilla derrota a Kong dos veces y lo deja en paro cardíaco, lo cual me sorprende mucho, pues Kong es más popular en occidente y, además, es el personaje principal de la película (siempre pensé que tratarían de buscar algún tipo de empate o final neutral para no desmerecer a ninguno de los dos, pero siendo Godzilla más secundario y villano en la película, habían muchas posibilidades de que ganase Kong). La aparición de MechaGodzilla es la que devuelve la dignidad a Kong, pues salva a Godzilla y derrota al titán robótico (quitándole así el aura de perdedor que tenía escasos minutos antes).

El diseño de MechaGodzilla es un tanto raro, pero me gusta porque no intenta parecerse a ninguno de los MechaGodzillas japoneses. Además, el uso del color rojo en sus ojos o el rayo que tira por la boca hace un bonito contraste. Mi diseño de MechaGodzilla favorito sigue siendo el de los años 70, pero agradezco que intentasen algo distinto.

Los titanes aprueban. Las escenas de batalla aprueban (y saben mantener un equilibrio entre lo épico y lo humorístico),  las escenas en solitario de ambos monstruos (Godzilla arrasando las instalaciones de Apex y Kong en la Tierra Hueca) también son muy buenas (y mucho más serias y dramáticas), en este sentido, no se puede decir nada malo de la película.

En la película anterior,Godzilla: King of the Monsters(2019) los humanos solo eran expectadores  de lo que sucedía, y admito que prefiero eso a lo que hicieron engodzilla(2014) donde la trama la arrastraba lenta y lamentablemente un protagonista tremendamente soso y aburrido (y encima nos engañaron al hacernos creer que el protagonista era el personaje interpretado por Bryan Cranston).

En esta película, optan por volver a usar a los humanos como espectadores. Por un lado tenemos lo que se podría llamar “el equipo Kong”, formado por Ilene, Nathan y Jia y luego tenemos al “equipo Godzilla” formado por Bernie, Madison y Josh.

El equipo Kong cumple su parte, soy aceptable y, aunque no sean grandiosos, al menos puedo encontrarle sentido a su aparición. La idea de que Kong tenga algún vínculo con la única superviviente de los humanos de su isla me parece buena. No le sacan mucho provecho, pero tampoco molesta.

El equipo Godzilla es de lo más lamentable de la película, Bernie intenta ser el recurso humorístico, y tal vez lo sea durante unos segundos, pero luego se vuelve insoportable. Madison es un personaje tan plano que solo es superada en ese aspecto por Josh, quien la acompaña sin estar realmente interesado en las locuras de Bernie.En cierto modo, Madison es el personaje más innecesario de los tres, (ya que Bernie y Josh son contrarios, pero se complementan, mientras que Madison y Bernie básicamente piensan igual y hacen lo mismo),lo cual es tremendamente triste, pues Madison era el único personaje de los tres que tenía historia(en la película anterior).

La idea de incluir a Bernie en la historia me parecería buena (en un mundo con monstruos gigantes, las conspiraciones deben ser algo habitual), peroel personaje en ningún momento se ve lo suficientemente inteligente para trabajar en Apex para robar información de la empresa sin ser descubierto(recordemos que toda la información que saca de Apex, la comenta en un podcast público, donde recalca que trabaja en Apex). El hecho de que Madison y Josh sean capaces de encontrar donde vive con una increíble facilidad y con la única pista de que Bernie compra mucha lejía tampoco ayuda a que su parte de la historia se vea creible (ni habla demasiado bien de Bernie). En la películaDr Strangelove, un soldado hablaba de que los comunistas ponían fluor en el agua para controlar a la gente; ese personaje era el loco de la película, un hombre que había llevado su patriotismo a un nivel de paranoia tan alto que es capaz de creer absolutamente cualquier cosa y capaz de arrasar toda la civilización por ello. Pues bien,Bernie cree en las mismas cosas, pero tenemos que considerar que es un hombre que sabe lo que hace y que está del bando de los buenos. Sinceramente, creo que el “equipo Godzilla” es un despropósito en su conjunto. Además, Bernie ni siquiera necesita para nada a Madison o Josh. Podría haber sido un personaje que actuase en solitario (pero al incluir a los otros personajes, pueden inundar sus escenas con algo que se podría considerar “chistes”, pero que cansan ).

Como he dicho, creo queMadison es un personaje que no aporta nada y podría dar más de sí,y lo mismo digo para su padre. Ambos aparecían en la película anterior como protagonistas y en este caso se podrían haber quitado de la historia sin afectar al resultado. Sin embargo,la mayor decepción hecha personaje humano la veo en Ren Serizawa.

El apellido Serizawa en las películas de Godzilla es un peso enorme, pues, en la primera película del monstruo, el Dr Serizawa es el protagonista, el héroe y el mártir (todo en uno). En el monsterverse el Dr Serizawa es un personaje distinto, a favor de la existencia de los monstruos (de hecho no duda en dar su vida para ayudar a Godzilla) y, debido a ello, la aparición de otro miembro de la familia es algo digno de explotar, cosa que la película no hace en absoluto. La idea de que Ren perdiese a su padre por culpa de Godzilla, y eso lo lleve a participar en los experimentos de Apex para pilotar el MechaGodzilla es genial, pero en la película es un personaje con apenas dos frases y dos escenas.Creo que si hubiesen eliminado al “equipo Godzilla” y hubiesen desarrollado a Ren Serizawa habríamos ganado mucho, pues nos habríamos enterado de los experimentos de Apex igualmente y, además, habríamos visto al MechaGodzilla con otros ojos. Ren podría haber sido un villano memorable, pues tiene motivos para odiar a los monstruos y, además, pilota el MechaGodzilla. Habría sido genial ver parte de su infancia con su padre y cómo enfrentó su pérdida- Además, habría sido el contrapunto de Jia, pues ella tiene una conexión positiva con Kong, mientras que Ren tiene una destructiva con Godzilla en el sentido de que acabar con él se ha vuelto el único objetivo de su vida. Imaginaos hasta que punto podrían hacer que este personaje fuese memorable en la batalla final. En lugar de eso, lo vemos dos veces en toda la película y el MechaGodzilla se pilota solo durante el combate final.

Summing up,Godzilla Vs Kongme ha gustado mucho en cuanto a monstruos, pero me ha decepcionado en cuanto a los humanos(algo habitual en estas películas). Había mucho potencial en ellos, habían buenas ideas y reaparecían personajes de la película anterior, pero nada de eso se explota lo suficiente. El equipo Kong es aceptable, el equipo Godzilla es lamentable y Ren Serizawa es una idea tan buena que incluso se podría haber usado en una película de Godzilla en solitario como trama principal, pero que en esta película es una anécdota.

Al ver la película me plantee la siguiente pregunta: ¿prefiero esta película aKing Kong Vs Godzilla(1962) y la respuesta es un rotundo sí. Esta película ha sabido usar a ambos personajes de la mejor manera posible, nos ofrece entretenimiento y espectáculo y, aunque sus humanos sean tan lamentables, eso es algo tristemente habitual en las películas de Godzilla (tanto en las japonesas como en las americanas).Godzilla Vs Konges el broche de oro del Monsterverse de Legendary, pero, debido a que ha dado bastante dinero, decidieron hacer una secuela, de la cual tal vez hable en otra ocasión.

Algunas curiosidades de la película

• Esta película fue la más taquillera durante la pandemia, acumulando 122 millones de dólares en un solo fin de semana.
• Kaylee Hottle es sorda en la vida real, por eso fue escogida para el papel de Jia. El director de la película trató de aprender lengua de signos para comunicarse con ella durante el rodaje, pero al final contrató a un intérprete.
• En esta película podemos ver cómo Kong le mete el mango del hacha a Godzilla en la boca, recreando una escena similar de la película de 1962 donde Kong le metía un árbol (escena que se volvió popular en internet junto con la frase Eat Your Vegetables).
• Según el director, hay tanto metraje grabado que se podría haber hecho una película de más de 3 horas. Lamentablemente, a día de hoy no se ha visto nada destacable de esas escenas descartadas.
• Antes de que saliese la película, se filtraron imágenes de los juguetes que la promocionaban, descubriéndose así la participación de MechaGodzilla en la película.
• El final de la película, con Kong viviendo en la Tierra Hueca, iba a ser una escena post-créditos, pero se decidió incluirla como cierre de la película.
• Cuando Kong es llevado volando para evitar ser atacado por Godzilla. También es una referencia aKing Kong Vs Godzilla(1962) donde lo  transportaban con globos. El director no quería homenajear esa escena al considerarla ridícula. Sin embargo, terminó haciendo algo parecido para justificar que Kong llegase sano y salvo a la entrada de la Tierra Hueca.
