[Review] The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (manga)

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight PrincessIt has always been a special delivery for me. Although I'm not exactly new to video games, I didn't try a Zelda (not counting quick games at friends' houses) until I got my hands on the game.last installment of the franchise on GameCube and first on Wii. In fact, it was on this platform that I enjoyed it, inaugurating that new experience that was handling the WiiMote in different aspects (using the separate controls in both hands, pointing at the screen occasionally, the microphone built into it, etc.). The fact that at that time I was in a time of change may also have had an influence. The summer of 2007 was an interval between two stages, the end of the Selectivity and the first year of the University. All this subjective component should not detract from the game itself. Although there are those who called it too much of a continuity, thatstruggle between good and evil, light and darkness, no matter how hackneyed it is at this point, it still works magnificently well, represented with the passage from the world of light to the world of Twilight. Plus, the enemies have great designs and Midna is the best helper I've seen so far in a video game in the series.

This whole cocktail of objective and subjective experiences is what makes me so fond of this title and explains why I was so excited to discover thatEditorial Standardhad put up for sale amanga based on him, while taking a look in a comic book store in Salamanca during a visit to some old acquaintances of this page, several years ago. Despite everything, it was not until relatively recently that I decided to purchase the collection, the same one that I am now preparing to review.

To begin with, I must say that thistwilight princessIt is not the first manga adaptation of the franchise. In fact, it is neither for the publisher nor forAkira Himekawa(which, although the authors sign as one person, is actually an artistic duo,A. Honda and S. Nagano). In a previous collection, they had calledOcarina of Time,Majora's Mask,A Link to the Past,The Minish Cap,Oracle of Ages,Oracle of Seasons,Four SwordsandPhantom Hourglass. All of them occupy one volume, exceptOcarina of TimeandFour Swords, which are made up of two. Therefore,The novelty lies in being the first relatively long series based on a Zelda. Frankly, it is appreciated, because the ones I read from the other collection seem to me to have a narrative that is too rushed, they go too much to the point. And, for me, they couldn't have chosen a better title to expand on.

The very style of the Zelda leaves open many possibilities for those who want to adapt them to a more narrative format. Let us remember that Link is invariably a mute being, whom we move from one side of Hyrule to another. He is the one who fights evil, finds arcane objects, helps those in need and ultimately saves the world, yes, butWe barely know anything about his character.. That, as I say, gives a lot of leeway. What is the case of the mangatwilight princess? From my point of view, the Akira Himekawa have given it a quite interesting approach. And that, at first, did not bode well. I will never forgive them for breaking the mysterious atmosphere of the opening scene, in which Moi rhetorically asks Link the reason why people get melancholy with the arrival of twilight and he answers "because they get hungry?" It seemed like they would have made Link the typical gluttonous, carefree and histrionic shonen hero. Luckily, it would be a false alarm.

As in thetwilight princessoriginal,Link is a resident of Ordon, a small and peaceful town where peace reigns. That does not mean that he remains idle, because there he is never short of tasks. He helps Moi, the town swordsman, collect firewood, herds the goats (which, along with the pumpkins, make the town famous in the region) and, in general, lends himself to any work whenever he can. His exemplary attitude has made him a role model among local children. In addition, he has a mare named Epona, and maintains a close friendship with Ilia, between whom there is a mutual attraction. However (and here comes the great contribution of the manga),Under that facade is a Link tormented by his past.. Giving an explanation as to why his ears are pointed, in contrast to the rest of the neighborhood, we find that Link is an outsider who has been in Ordon for less than two years. I'm not going to go into details in case someone hasn't read it, but feels responsible for a certain fatality that happened in their homeland. Therefore, he actually feels a kind of imposter syndrome no matter how much praise he receives from his neighbors.

In this adventure we see one of the possible reactions that someone can have when they find out that they are the chosen one of the goddesses to save the world. In video games there is none of that, because he doesn't say a word, and that undoubtedly takes away a lot of drama and the ability to empathize with the protagonist. On the other hand, in the manga we see aLink, who at first appears overwhelmed by responsibility and unsure of his abilities to carry out the mission.. As the story progresses, he will find himself immersed in a fierce internal struggle that will make him evolve in his personality.

The manga oftwilight princessIt follows the essence of the original story. As those of you who have played it will remember,monstruos comandados por el fornido Rey Bublin atacan a Link y compañía, secuestran a Ilia y a Iván(el pequeño hijo del alcalde), dejando inconsciente a nuestro héroe. Al despertar, acude en ayuda de sus amigos, pero termina cayendo en manos de las fuerzas del Crepúsculo, que le transportan a su mundo, sufriendo en el proceso unamisteriosa transformación en lobo. En las mazmorras del palacio de Hyrule conoce aMidna, una especie de chica-diablillo arrogante, traviesa y maliciosa.Juntos, se embarcarán en un viaje en busca de la sombra fundida, la forma física que entraña un poder inconmensurable con el que derrotar a Zant, el usurpador del reino del Crepúsculo que, al parecer, está detrás de todo esto.

Eso sí, como suele suceder en muchas adaptaciones, aunque siga la línea de la trama, los detalles y la forma en la que se llega a una situación determinada a menudo varían. Por ejemplo, al principio se juntan dos eventos. De un lado, la búsqueda de Talo y Lalo (dos de los niños amigos de Link), en el que nuevamente el primero se extravía en el bosque (aunque por razones un poco diferentes) y, de otro, el ataque del rey Bublin. En el juego, por el contrario, vamos en busca de los hermanos y, al día siguiente, Link acude a la fuente a encontrarse con Ilia, donde es atacado por el rey Bublin y sus secuaces. Podría poner muchos más ejemplos, pero entraría en spoilers y alargaría demasiado este artículo.

En todo caso, considero queesta versión combina bastante bien la fidelidad a los hechos del juego con las inevitables licenciasque ha de tener un formato tan diferente como es el manga. Así, veremos a los principales personajes de la trama, como la tabernera Telma, el sacerdote de Kakariko Leonardo, el Yeto y su esposa, el erudito Shad, o la guerrera Salma,teniendo sus respectivos momentos de gloria, ya sea los que presenciamos en GameCube o Wii (o WiiU) u otros de la cosecha de las autoras. Por ejemplo, aquí el papel del malvado Rey Bublin, Ilia y Shad son considerablemente ampliados, con escenas en ausencia de Link. También Salma tendrá su momento y, de hecho, las autoras reconocieron que disfrutaron mucho con sus escenas, al valorar positivamente a los personajes femeninos que no están simplemente para figurar como mero interés amoroso del protagonista.

Siguiendo con las licencias, cabe destacar algunas curiosidades. Por ejemplo, el hecho de queMidna, antes de ser transformada en diablillo, tuviese un lobo como mascota. Es posible que se inspirasen enHyrule Warriors, donde es acompañada de un lobo que aparece durante la celebración de la victoria. Asimismo,aquí es mucho más palpable cómo Midna va desarrollando sentimientos amorosos hacia Link, obsequiándonos con alguna que otra escena cariñosa entre ambos personajes. Seguramente esto haga las delicias de los fans que shippean (emparejan) a ambos personajes, aunque a mí me gustaba más la sutileza con la que este asunto era tratado en el juego. Aunque es de suponer que realmente se hubiese enamorado de él (no sería precisamente una rareza en la saga), la mayoría de detalles que observábamos ahí dependían mucho de la interpretación del jugador, y lo que resultaba verdaderamente incuestionable era la complicidad y la camaradería que había entre ambos.Personalmente, creo que se les fue la mano en nombre del fanservice.   

Por último, me gustaría señalar elcarácter oscuro y violento de la adaptación. Tanto, que me sorprende ver algo así en un producto con el sello de Nintendo.Hay no pocas escenas sangrientas, y una en concreto prácticamente llega al ensañamiento. Ésta tiene mucho que ver con determinado giro de guion que veremos en torno al ecuador de la serie, uno que rompe por completo con el carácter predecible que hasta ese punto tenía la historia para aquellos que completamos el juego, pero que engarza con cierta tradición de la franquicia. Felicito a las autoras, pues uno de los “inconvenientes” de adaptaciones más fieles es que sabemos los derroteros por los que va a transcurrir la historia, y por un momento lograron hacerme dudar de lo que creía saber de la misma. No es la primera vez que ocurre, pues hay algunos elementos argumentales totalmente nuevos que, lejos de desviar en exceso la trama, tienden a enriquecerla. Eso sí,hay algunos detalles que contradicen el lore y encuentro molesto que se use la palabra “crepúsculo” sin ton ni son(no sé si será por la traducción).

En resumen, el manga de The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess cumple con la fidelidad a la historia original, al tiempo que le aporta nuevos elementos acordes al formato y que sorprenden algo a aquellos que ya la conocemos. Su estilo oscuro y violento y sus toques épicos lo hacen bastante disfrutable, aunque, desde mi perspectiva, se les fue la mano con el romance. Sus once volúmenes lo convierten en una colección corta, pero lo bastante extensa como para que no sepa demasiado a poco.
