[HorrorScience] Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)

Although science fiction may be a genre considered “to entertain” and is rarely taken seriously, there are many films of this genre that have marked the history of cinema in an unrepeatable way. One of them isplanet of the apes(1968) based on the book written by Pierre Boulle but with enough differences from him to have its own identity, especially due to its memorable ending. Charlton Heston was the star in that film (but the aforementioned ending was what immortalized the film). The incredible success ofplanet of the apesgave rise toa series of sequels of varying quality, but they had a certain charm, because, despite the constant change of tone and approach between one and the other,They all tried to criticize societyof the moment, dealing with topics such as the cult of celebrities or racism. The aftermath ended in 1973 withBattle of the Planet of the Apesand that's where the story should end (if we don't count unlicensed television series and movies based on this saga).

In 2001 it was decided to make a new version ofPlanet of the Apesfrom the hand of Tim Burton, who had a mixed reception, well, althoughVisually it was spectacular, otherwise it paled in comparison to the original. That film had no sequels, so it remained a rarity in the history of the saga.

a decade laterAn attempt was made to revive this franchise again, with a totally different approachand telling a story that would take place before the apes had control of the planet.Rise of the Planet of the Apes(or theOrigin of the Planet of the Apes) was a success and that led to the appearance of new sequels, which used concepts already covered in the original sequels but with totally different stories,thus giving rise to a new trilogy focused on the figure of Caesar,the ape who led the rebellion (both in this version and in the 70s version).

The new saga ofplanet of the apesIt had a good ending to its story, it didn't need more, but for some reason someone thought that more money could be made from it, so in 2024,7 years after the last moviefrom the previous trilogy, appearedKingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which although it can be considered a sequel to what was seen in the latest films, its connection is so far away that it can be seen in total isolation without problems.

The film begins by introducing us to three young apes (Noa, Anaya and Soona) who are trying to steal eagle eggs, for which they must climb the steepest mountains in the area. The reason for your search is thatThey belong to a tribe where apes raise and care for eaglesand the next day the ritual will happen in which they will be able to start raising their own animal, if they get an egg. During their adventure, someone steals Noa's blanket and, when her mother arrives at the village, she tells her that it may have been a human and that she should stay away from them, as they only bring problems.

Noa's father is the main eagle breeder and, because of this, the young ape does not want to disappoint him, but unfortunately hebreaks its precious egg when it collides with a humanwho is found stealing food in her village.

Despite the shock of encountering a human (something unusual for that tribe of apes), Noa is more worried about having lost the egg, so he rides his horse back into the mountains to get another one before dawn. The nocturnal search for this apewill lead him to discover another tribe of apesthat destroy everything. Unfortunately, Noa's intrusion causes that army to find their village and dedicate themselves to killing and kidnapping apes, while burning their houses.

Driven by guilt and a thirst for revenge, Noa advances after the army of apes and along the way he meets Raka, an orangutan who keeps alive the teachings of Caesar, the first great ape. Raka teaches Noa that humans are harmless and that, apparently, in the past they could speak and were even intelligent, although now they are just simple animals. Raka's influence makes them take care of the human who was following them, who turns out to be the same one who broke Noa's eagle egg). 

During their journey, the ape army attacks them again. Raka does not survive the attack, while Noa and the human are captured by the army that, apparently, follows orders from one Proximus Caesar, a megalomaniac ape, obsessed with human history (he even has one of the few intelligent humans that exist, to read history books to him).

Proximus has dedicated itselfto forcefully recruit all the apes he has found to create a huge armyand unstoppable, but that does not satisfy him, because in the ruins in which they live there is a human bunker with the door closed, which he wants to access by all means, because he knows that inside there is something that could ensure his dominance and, in the process, evolve the apes at an incredible speed.

Mae, the human who followed Cesar,turns out to be intelligentque habría fingido ser salvaje para acercarse a Noa y ganarse su confianza y le cuenta a Cesar que el bunker que hay en los dominios de Proximus son las ruinas del último gobierno clandestino humano y que, si él logra hacerse con su contenido, el mundo estará condenado, de manera que entre todos trazan un plan para inutilizar el contenido del bunker.

La última trilogía deplanet of the apesno estaba nada mal. Empezaron con una propuesta distinta a lo visto anteriormente conRise of the Planet of the Apespara finalmente continuar por un camino un tanto previsible, pero igualmente válido.

Esta película tieneuna propuesta inicial bastante original,enseñándonos cómo los simios se han expandido y ahora, muchos años después de la muerte de Cesar, también tienen creencias, tradiciones y costumbres totalmente distintas entre sí. Eso creo que es lo mejor que hay en la película y, sinceramente, me habría gustado ver otras tribus de simios de sitios distintos (simios que vivan en la costa, simios en el desierto, simios que vivan en cuevas subterráneas), algo que se podría haber mostrado ligeramente cuando aparece Proximus (debido a que se dedica a arrasar poblados simios y anexarlos por la fuerza a su ejército).

La idea de que el legado de Cesar y sus palabras se hayan tergiversado todo lo posible para el beneficio de alguien que ostenta el poderes algo que vemos en la vida real constantemente,ya que así se justifican acciones injustificables (y te aseguras un séquito de fieles, pues en origen tú estás supuestamente usando una creencia con la cual están de acuerdo), así que el reflejo humano en Proximus de nuestros gobernantes es tan obvio como necesario.

El trío protagonista inicial (Noa, Anaya y Soona) es bastante simpático, aunque algo visto (el líder, el sabio y el torpe). Esos tres simios se hacen querer y, aunque sabemos que van a usar todos los tópicos posibles con ellos (incluido el hecho de que uno no se atreva a hacer algo, pero luego mágicamente se le pase el miedo justo antes de cumplir con lo que le atemorizaba minutos atrás), admito que me han caído simpáticos.

El cambio de trio (Noa, Raka y la humana) es mucho menos agradable. Admito que siento debilidad por el personaje sabio que ayuda al protagonista (que en estas películas suele ser un orangután) y, debido a ello, Raka me resulta aceptable, pero he de admitir queestá muy forzado en la historia, como si lo hubiesen metido con calzador y, además, lo quitan de la película con la misma facilidad con la que lo introducen. Estoy seguro que el impacto de Raka sobre Noa podría haberse hecho de alguna manera mejor.

En cuantoal personaje humano, Nova o Mae, es un despropósito.Inicialmente tenemos que verla como una mascota simpática de la misma manera que veríamos a un perro, y sentir compasión por ella, pero el hecho de que vaya vestida con ropa “normal” y no como el resto de humanos ya nos da pistas de que esconde algo. Una vez vemos lo que es,se vuelve bastante previsible, ya que, en esencia, hace lo que el villano de la película dice que va a hacer. Entiendo perfectamente que los humanos sean neutrales o incluso villanos en estas películas, pero en este caso, su unión con el protagonista es tremendamente forzada e incluso en la última escena (cuando ambos han colaborado y ha logrado lo que necesitaba) se presenta ante Noa con un arma escondida. ¿Con que propósito? Supongo que el principal problema de Nova/Mae, es que esta película se ha pensado como la primera para una trilogía y su participación en esta primera parte solo es una excusa para presentarnos el hecho de que aún quedan humanos inteligentes tratando de recuperar su planeta (algo que se podrían haber guardado para la secuela, donde seguro que los humanos van a tener mayor participación). 

A nivel visual, la película es una maravilla. Me encanta como han representado las ruinas del antiguo mundo humano, integradas en un entorno totalmente natural y también que la fortaleza de Proximus sea un antiguo barco varado en la costa. Por supuesto, los simios se ven muy bien, y los protagonistas tienen rostros reconocibles para que sepamos quiénes son con cierta facilidad.

In summary,Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, tiene buenas ideas y cosas que me han gustado, pero también ciertos elementos que no aportan mucho o incluso perjudican la película. Sinceramente, si se hubiesen excluido los humanos en esta película para centrarse en la lucha de pequeñas tribus de simios contra Proximus, me habría gustado muchísimo más.

• Según fuentes oficiales, la película sucede 300 años después deLa guerra del planeta de los simios(2017), aunque en la película nunca se da ese dato. Sólo se dice que sucede “generaciones después de la muerte de Cesar”.
• El símbolo usado para recordar a Cesar es la venta que tenía en su casa enThe origin of the planet of the apes(2011)
• Hay muchos homenajes a la primera película delPlaneta de los Simios(1968), como la escena donde cazan los humanos o la muñeca que encuentran los simios.
• Los posters de la película han variado dependiendo del país, mostrando monumentos propios de cada uno como si formasen parte de la película, aunque obviamente luego no aparecen en la misma.
