[Meeting…] Yugo Hachiken

It's not long since I wrote about Petra, a small town girl who couldn't quite adapt to life in the city. It was one more of the so-called rural exodus that led millions of people, preferably young people, to abandon the countryside and look for a life in cities that did not stop growing. Now, currently the reverse phenomenon also takes place (infinitely less massive than that one, yes) in which certain population groups, especially young people, return to the countryside, often driven by ideological reasons (seeking a quieter life, away from the hustle and bustle and consumerism of the city), although since the crisis occurred, the economic motives derived from a labor market where they find fewer and fewer spaces have gained ground.

They are the so-called “neorrurals”, which sometimes energize a depressed and depopulated context. And it is precisely a very peculiar “neorrural” that is going to make an appearance in today's article. It is aboutYugo Hachiken, the protagonist of the Japanese manga Silver Spoon (Gin no Saji in Japanese), byHiromu Arakawa, the author of Fullmetal Alchemist, whose co-star,Alphonse Elric, I already talked about it in the first season.

An urbanite on the farm

Yugo Hachiken is a middle-class young man born and raised in the city of Sapporo. Of reserved and competitive character, is what is known as a nerd, in the most extreme sense of the word. From very early on he dedicated himself to studies to obsessive levels. So much so that it seems that He never acquired any real hobbies or life goals. in the medium and long term. We will soon learn that this is due to a family environment that is particularly strict when it comes to academic matters. The pressure to which he was subjected was such that, after failing the university entrance exam, decided to run away to an environment as far away and as undemanding as possible (or so he thought). That's how he came to Yezo Agricultural Training School (also transliterated as Oezo), in the rural Japanese region of Hokkaido, an academy where young aspiring farmers find their specialty in the different branches of the agricultural sector.

It is true that he felt quite out of place and lacked the life dreams of his classmates. Not in vain was he the only one who did not belong to a family of farmers from whom he could inherit the family business, but at least I expected to be the best in a school which presupposed a low academic level. However, he soon realized that the place chosen for his escape was not going to be the bed of roses he had imagined. The theoretical subjects turned out to be much more complex and specific of what he assumed (agrarian engineering, anatomy, biochemistry, etc.), and, to his horror, he discovered that his classmates did not even remotely correspond to the stereotype of ignorant rednecks, since they spoke to each other in a language so full of technicalities that at times he almost believed they were speaking another language.

But the worst were the enormous physical rigors of their new way of life. Farming work, feeding and caring for animals, physical education and mandatory extracurricular activities organized by the different clubs of the academy constituted a challenge for a sedentary person who was alien to anything resembling physical exercise. Another of his Achilles heels would be the early risers imposed by the rigorous schedule of the farm, which included getting up at five in the morning, or even at four if there was some extra activity involved.

As I already indicated in the introduction, Yugo He also accused the culture shock inherent to the gap between the countryside and the city, although in the opposite way than Petra. On this occasion, what the protagonist misses most are the comforts of the city, such as the lack of coverage de su teléfono móvil. También le cuesta entender la mentalidad pragmática de los granjeros, preocupados en la productividad por encima de todo, aunque ello suponga sacrificar animales que ya se ven incapaces de seguir desempeñando su función. The boy who never refuses

Con todo, conforme fue pasando el tiempo, nuestro protagonista fue adaptándose a las nuevas circunstancias y forjando su personalidad, siguiendo la senda hacia la madurez y la autorrealización. Así, la vida en comunidad y el trabajo en equipo hicieron que su carácter individualista y competitivo diera paso a una faceta mucho más solidaria y cooperativa. De hecho, siempre parece dispuesto a ayudar a los que lo necesitan, aunque ello suponga cargar problemas adicionales sobre sus hombros, con lo que le hizo merecedor del sobrenombre de “el chico que nunca se niega”.

También parece tener un don para hacer que el resto de personas aporten sus habilidades en pos de un objetivo común, tal como pudo apreciarse en el evento de la pizza. Quizás el hecho de verse obligado a derribar sus ideas preconcebidas causase un efecto similar en los demás, dando pie a un sano intercambio de opiniones, algo que hubiera sido más difícil dentro de un grupo homogéneo. Asimismo, decidirá afrontar las consecuencias de sacar vidas adelante con el sólo propósito de ser sacrificadas para el consumo humano, incluso aunque conlleve implicaciones emocionales. Para dotarlo de mayor simbolismo, no vacilará en poner un nombre a los animales, tal y como hizo con un cerdo al que llamó Chuletón.

Pese a que tiende a llevarse bien con todos sus compañeros y personal de la academia, hay un puñado de ellos con los que tiene especial cercanía. De entre todos, con quien más ha estrechado lazos ha sido con Aki Mikage, una chica amable, alegre y amante de los caballos que muy pronto se convertirá en su amor platónico, y cuya tensión amorosa constituye uno de los pilares de la serie, como no puede ser de otra manera en este tipo de manga. Yugo tratará en todo momento de mostrarse atento y amable con ella, así como a animarla a perseguir sus sueños. Ésta, a su vez, le corresponderá con distintas lecciones cotidianas y le animará a enterrar el hacha de guerra con su familia. Es más, gracias a ella pudo decantarse por la hípica como su nueva actividad extraescolar. Otros compañeros con los que más se relaciona son Ichiro Komaba, el típico “tipo duro” con el que tuvo algún que otro roce (algo que tampoco puede faltar en este género), Keiji Tokiwa, un mal estudiante que parece ser incapaz de aprender matemáticas por muchas clases particulares que le dé, y Shinnosuke Aikawa, un aspirante a veterinario que siente animadversión por el sacrificio animal, entre otros.

Conclusion and recommendations

Yugo Hachiken es un empollón urbanita que, para huir de la insoportable presión familiar, termina en la academia agraria Yezo. Su carácter individualista y competitivo a ultranza dará paso a otro más maduro y solidario, dedicando la mayor parte de su tiempo a ayudar a los demás y trabajar duro mientras poco a poco va forjando su camino hacia un sueño que apenas comienza a vislumbrar.

A diferencia de las aventuras de los hermanos Elric, Silver Spoon no se caracteriza por las aventuras ni la acción, ni tiene su mismo carácter oscuro. Por el contrario, se relata las vivencias del protagonista en una granja cuya caracterización bebe de una escrupulosa documentación (la propia Arakawa se crió en el campo de Hokkaido), por lo que ofrece una ventana al Japón rural actual, poco frecuente en este tipo de productos, aunque tampoco falten ciertos tópicos de las series escolares y de academia. Quien quiera darle una oportunidad, puede empezar leyendo el manga. En España, está siendo publicado por Norma Editorial, con doce volúmenes hasta la fecha (aún no está cerrada).

También existe una adaptación al anime, que hasta ahora cuenta con dos temporadas de once capítulos cada una.
