[Meeting…] Noa

Throughout this section, and as I have commented on more than one occasion, I have been explaining that the key when it comes to representing a dystopian future is to take the worst of the times in which we have lived. The catastrophic culmination of the arms race, especially the nuclear one, resulted in the post-apocalyptic worlds of Only and Gilgamesh the Immortal. The darker side of the development of biotechnology gave rise to the universe of Brian the Brain, in which human experimentation was practically the daily bread among the most humble people who found no other way out. The extreme bureaucratization and technicalization of all aspects of life created a cold and dehumanized society in Gwendolyn 3-19-4. The accumulation of wealth in a few hands and the impoverishment of the people was the source of inspiration for the universe of Lazarus.

But what kind of universe would result from the combination of sectarian violence, the television circus and media manipulation as a mechanism for controlling the masses and the sexual exploitation of intelligent dolls (there are already brothels specializing in dolls, and the issue of sexual relations with robots is even beginning to be raised)? The answer is that of Sky-Doll, by Alessandro Barbucci and Bárbara Canepa, whose protagonist I am about to introduce.

Doll on the run

Noa is a Skydoll, that is, a doll endowed with intelligence, designed with the optimal sexual attributes for male pleasure and programmed to obey. To achieve the first, the manufacturers were in charge of making them attractive and making them from a type of extremely soft rubber for their “attributes” and their skin in general (apart from that, they have attenuated zoomorphic features such as a cat nose, long and pointed ears and a tail, in line with the rest of the intelligent beings in the work). As for the second, their owners ensure their obedience both through control of your memories as the incorporation of a mechanism on his back. This is none other than a lifelong rope, like the one carried by those old automaton toys and without which any attempt to escape is useless, well, Without it, after a while they stop working. The function of Skydolls is essentially to means of giving free rein to the most basic instinctsof the population (mainly male) of a society where these dolls constitute the only exception to the prohibition on extramarital relations, as they are not technically living beings.

Noa and the rest of the robotic dolls work in a Heaven space laundry (one that includes “special services,” obviously), located in the planet Patathea and run by a weasel-like pimp who calls himself God. Apart from the egomania that such a nickname denotes, it is characterized by its tyrannical and ruthless treatment of girls, as was seen when Noa dared to criticize their practices and recommend setting up a suggestion box. All in all, her companions seem to be satisfied with their situation (probably due to the conditions indicated in the previous paragraph), and Only she seems to be unhappy with the current state of affairs.

Chance would have it that, in a mishap during washing, the protagonist doll fell directly into a Pope Ludovica's diplomatic ship, whose crew were Roy and Jahu, who would soon reveal themselves as two of the main characters of the series. Shortly after introducing herself to the first one, “God” appeared to take her back. The surprise was great when, after continuing on their way and shortly before arriving at a space station, Roy himself discovered her as a stowaway hidden behind a hatch and disconnected when the “rope” had run out.

The mystery of Agape

Typically, the personality of Noah is happy, and on certain occasions, almost frivolous. However, beneath that carefree facade hides a being with deep existential concerns. Siente que algo está incompleto en su memoria y necesita salir del tugurio en el que está esclavizada para descubrir quién es en realidad. Esa es la razón que la llevó a embarcarse clandestinamente en la nave de los dos emisarios papales (junto con una pequeña criatura blanca y peluda que le acompaña a todas partes). Nada más conocer a Roy(un chico de carácter ingenuo y ligeramente tímido cuyo pelaje y rasgos faciales le hacen parecer un chivo) conectó con él a la perfección, no sólo literalmente (Noa se había llevado su cuerda consigo, por lo que la reactivó) sino también a nivel personal. El joven intercedería por ella cuando un iracundo Jahu (un personaje gruñón y resentido por alguna razón secreta) descubrió a la pasajera no deseada.

La Skydoll parecía desconocer los principales acontecimientos político-religiosos que marcaban el devenir de su sociedad, pero no tardó en ponerse al día. Después de tiempos inmemoriales en los que la Iglesia había sido gobernada por una sola papisa, un “experimento de marketing” había dado lugar a un papado dual. De un lado estaba Ludovica, representante de los atributos carnales, y cuya vestimenta en las ceremonias era un cruce entre los barrocos ropajes de las figuras de las Vírgenes y elementos sadomasoquistas. De otro, Ágape, encarnación del mundo espiritual. La creciente popularidad de esta última llenó de celos a Ludovica, quien ordenó asesinar a su hermana. Desde entonces hizo lo posible para asentar su autoridad a través de pomposas ceremonias cargadas de sangre y muerte que vendía como milagros pese a no ser más que efectos especiales. También orquestó una campaña propagandística masiva a través de una televisión donde prima la farándula y el circo mediático más trivial y sensacionalista. Todo este despliegue no fue suficiente para disuadir a los incondicionales de Ágape, quienes consideran a Ludovica una usurpadora, una farsante y una vulgar prostituta, efectuando disturbios y atentados cada vez más expeditivos.

Nada de esto parece tener relación alguna con Noa, pero todo cambió desde que se convirtió en compañera de viaje de los dos legados y, por lo tanto, acabó mezclándose en los planes de la pérfida Ludovica. Para embrollar aún más las cosas, desde su breve estancia en la estación de servicio espacial y en lo sucesivo, se vio envuelta en experiencias extrasensoriales que parecían tener la figura de Ágape como nexo de unión. No sólo eso, sino que empezó a tener consciencia de poseer habilidades y poderes sobrenaturales que escapaban a su comprensión. La búsqueda de su verdadero yo apenas acababa de comenzar.

Conclusion and recommendations

Noa es una Skydoll, es decir, una muñeca inteligente pensada para el placer carnal. El afán de superar su vacío existencial y conocer su pasado es lo que la diferencia del común de las muñecas y lo que le llevará a embarcarse como polizón de la nave de dos legados papales. Desde entonces se producirán en ella una serie de eventos inexplicables que parecen tener algún tipo de relación con la desaparecida papisa Ágape.

Debido a su popularidad y a lo relativamente reciente de sus publicaciones, Sky-Doll es una serie bastante fácil de conseguir, siendo Norma la encargada de distribuirlos en España. Los tres primeros tomos fueron publicados en su versión original en los años 2000 (La Ciudad Amarilla), 2002 (Agua) y 2006 (La Ciudad Blanca). En otros volúmenes, donde se incorporan otros autores además de los dos habituales, profundizan más en el pasado de Noa desde su creación hasta los acontecimientos del primer número, en los que veremos trabajando en los empleos más variopintos. Se trata de Doll’s Factory (2002) y Spaceship Collection (2007).

Le siguieron varios años de sequía en los que parecía que la historia iba a quedar inconclusa, pero en 2014 llegó al fin el cuarto (Sudra), así como un integral titulado Decade 00>10 (2016) que comprende los tres primeros volúmenes.
