One of the things I like to do most in my free time is to look for the reasons for some things, but I'm not talking about important things, but rather about nonsense that doesn't matter. Because of this, I have been discovering curiosities, some of which are related to successful series from the 80s and 90s, so I thought it would be good to write another one. my curiosities articles, this time telling some related to the products that were sold from them.

The merchandising of the series is a great source of income, but years ago, it was something more than that, since many animated series were created exclusively with the idea of ​​selling dolls, which turned them into a television advertisement, since the scripts were written with the need to introduce the new toys that were going to be put on sale. This was important since it forced us to work quickly on two totally different products that had to appear simultaneously, because if one of the two arrived too late, it could cause the failure of the entire brand.

Even knowing that the series from my childhood were made with the sole intention of selling toys instead of developing the characters or their story, I think that doesn't make them lose their charm. After all, this way of working led to the exaggerated creation of new characters and vehicles, causing the creators of the series to necessarily innovate (at least to a certain extent), instead of repeating the same episode with the same characters.

Galaxy Rangers: Bad Planning and Forgetfulness

I will start the article with Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers (also known as Guardians of the Galaxy or The Adventures of the Galactic Patrol), a series that despite being innovative in its theme (it mixed cowboys with science fiction) did not last in the memories of children like others of its time did.

It is normal that when many products are created for the same audience, there is a large group of them that remains in the shadows, because at the moment in which several of these products are successful in the media, they eat up the space (both on television and on the shelves of toy stores) that would be destined for those other series, which in the best of cases, will be remembered by someone who will look for them as an adult on the Internet (do you remember Monsterplants, I mean, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors?).

The reason why a series with such a striking theme and with toys that any parent could view favorably (in essence they were cowboys and not mutant monsters) was forgotten was not only the competition, it was the poor planning of combining the series and the toys at the same time.

Galaxy Rangers It premiered on television when the toys were not ready to fill the stores in the United States, so when they reached the toy stores they did so in very poor print runs and with the series already underway. From what I understand, some of his toys were impossible to find in his day, especially the horses and what is a cowboy without his horse? Let's say you are a child and you see this series, you like it and you say to your father "Dad, I want one of those", your father goes to the store and there are no toys. Galaxy Rangers…What's happening? That in the best of cases he will buy you a toy so that you stop bothering him, but that toy will be from another series. From then on, with a He-Man in hand, you may prefer to watch Masters of the Universe and forget the Galaxy Rangers.

The forced forgetting of Galaxy Rangers It has made it become a “cult” series and its toys are quite valuable (despite the fact that the demand from collectors is much lower than toys from other series). The worst thing about this case is that the series was quite good, in fact it had quite a few episodes despite not having the support of toys and that is what makes you wonder if, if you had done things well, Galaxy Rangers would have achieved glory like they did Masters of the Universe, Ninja Turtles either G.I. Joe.

M.U.S.C.L.E: How to succeed, despite having everything against you

Kinnikuman (known in Spain as Muslim) is a manga starring a clumsy and cowardly superhero who, due to circumstances, has to participate in the Superhero Olympics, which will give him the opportunity to gain the respect he has never had.

This series was very successful in Japan, which caused an inevitable Anime series that tried to be exported by some Western countries, where other similar products were making their way in the early 90s. Unfortunately, the manga Kinnikuman It was not exported outside of Japan at the time (even today it has reached very few countries) and the animated series did not have as great an expansion as it deserved, reaching less than half the series to Chile, and almost all of it (except the final part) to Spain (where unfortunately it was only broadcast in Catalonia and the Valencian Community).

I have never been able to confirm it, but I deduce that censorship was largely responsible for that poor expansion. I'm not talking about censorship focused on violence (since the series was already much happier and less bloody than the manga) but rather political censorship, since this series featured German superheroes, who wore military uniforms and swastikas. It is true that once the series advanced, those symbols were changed, but the damage had already been done.

So Muslim It only became part of the childhood of Japanese, Chilean, Catalan and Valencian children. However, there are other countries (such as Italy or the United States) where many children would recognize the characters from the series, despite never having seen it, because (somehow) the dolls Muslim They were successful without any support from the series.

Muslim It was one of the first series to have Merchandising that was obtained in those machines where you put a coin and you got a ball with a doll (Gashapon), achieving incredible success with its figurines, even though they were small, ugly and of only one color. These same figures reached some European countries (where their own versions were made with changed names, such as the Exogini or the Cosmix) and reached the United States under the name of M.U.S.C.L.E. (Which curiously is the name of one of the songs that appeared in the series Muslim).

Despite not having the support of the series, and even knowing that the dolls were not going to be flashy like those of other series, a lot of money was invested in the M.U.S.C.L.E. even having television advertisements and even launching the video game Muslim from Famicom, for the American NES under the name M.U.S.C.L.E.

By not having the series, M.U.S.C.L.E. They were sold with the background of “alien monsters fighting each other.” These aliens could be bought in boxes or in jars full of dolls of a single color (the unattractive flesh color was the one chosen). Once its expansion began, other accessories began to be sold, such as the wrestling ring or the champion belt.

M.U.S.C.L.E. Not only was it successful in the United States, but it also opened the door to the creation of similar products such as Monster in My Pocket or the Dino Brites. Tortugas Ninja: No pongas esa cara, que he traído Pizza

¿No son maravillosas las Ninja Turtles? De pequeño me encantaba mirar la primera serie de animación y luego ir a la tienda de juguetes a ver esos muñecos que no me iban a comprar mis padres. Una cosa que me chocó mucho de esos juguetes era que las Tortugas tenían la piel de colores diferentes y que por algún motivo estaban muy enfadadas, creo que jamás las había visto tan furiosas en mi vida. Además, algunos personajes eran más deformes, grandes o intimidantes y otros, como Slash, casi irreconocibles. ¿Por qué los juguetes tenían diseños tan geniales? Es algo que me pregunté en más de una ocasión.

Años más tarde descubrí el origen de las Tortugas Ninja: los cómics en blanco y negro de Mirage Comics, donde estos mutantes eran mucho más malcarados y violentos. Obviamente, esas cualidades se perdieron en la serie de televisión pero los juguetes mantuvieron el estilo del cómic original, pese a que supuestamente representaban la serie de animación.

Tal y como expliqué antes, la clave para obtener la gloria, es que haya un equilibrio entre la serie y la línea de muñecos. En el caso de las Tortugas Ninja lo hicieron correctamente, ambos productos estaban listos para el gran momento, pero debido a las prisas, no hubo una colaboración estrecha entre uno y otro.

Los diseños de los juguetes estaban basados, no solo en los cómics originales, si no también en los bocetos que Eastman y Laird (creadores de los personajes) habían dibujado. El estilo de ambos era más similar al del cómic que a la azucarada serie y de ahí que nos encontrásemos a personajes con un aspecto mucho más amenazante.

Lo curioso de este asunto es que parece que le pillaron el gusto e incluso personajes que salieron mucho más tarde en la serie (como Napoleon Bonafrog) tenían juguetes que no se parecían demasiado a su versión animada. En otro casos, (como Slash) el diseño del juguete era más cercano al personaje en los cómics TMNT Adventures (que se crearon tras la serie de animación) que a su contraparte animada.

Eventualmente, algunos de los personajes sufrieron cambios para tratar de parecerse más a los de la serie de televisión. Algunos juguetes fueron repintados para tal fin (como Shredder) otros sufrieron cambios en su cara (April) y las Tortugas Ninja, simplemente tuvieron nuevos juguetes con caras sonrientes.

Sin embargo, parece que ya era demasiado tarde, ya que los juguetes de Tortugas Ninja que habían formado parte de la infancia de muchos niños eran los primeros, de manera que se usó la cara de enfado incluso en las versiones nuevas de esos personajes que aparecieron más tarde y que tenían temáticas alocadas o divertidas (monstruos, músicos, deportistas, personajes de Star Trek…).

The Simpsons: What color is Bart's shirt?

Si me hubieseis preguntado de pequeño ¿de qué color tiene la camiseta Bart Simpson? Habría contestado » de color azul». Puede que a muchos os choque esa respuesta y no, no soy daltónico, pero cuando yo era pequeño, era tan habitual ver a Bart con la camiseta azul, como con la de color rojo anaranjado.

A día de hoy y contando la serie con tantísimas temporadas, está claro que nadie va a tener grabado a fuego a Bart con la camiseta azul. Sin embargo, a principios de los 90 la cosa era muy diferente: la serie estaba dando sus primeros pasos y algunos personajes sufrieron cambios de diseño (esta es la época en la cual Barney era rubio, Smithers era negro con el pelo Azul, Lou era blanco -bueno, amarillo- el Jefe Wiggum tenía el pelo negro, Moe vestía de color rosa y Bob tenía el pelo a lo Afro). Poco tiempo después, la serie sufrió un lavado de cara y rediseñó a los personajes, dejándolos con el aspecto que hoy conocemos.

Sin embargo, para ese momento ya había merchandising de los Simpson y debido a que en las primeras temporadas el personaje más famoso era Bart, existían cientos de productos de él. Lo curioso de esos productos era que en su mayoría lo mostraban con una camiseta azul y en algunos casos puntuales, incluso verde, ignorando el hecho de que Bart llevaba una camiseta roja en la serie de televisión.

Lo lógico sería pensar que muchos de esos productos eran falsificaciones, sin embargo eran totalmente oficiales, pues no solo eran muñecos, también eran libros y videojuegos (algo mucho más difícil de falsificar y vender sin que te caiga una denuncia de la FOX). Quizás el punto culminante de esto fue el capítulo de Futurama donde encuentran muñecos de Bart Simpson en una bola de basura de los años 90, todos ellos con la camiseta de color azul. También es importante el hecho de que en los anuncios de televisión promocionados por los Simpsons, Bart también dejaba su camiseta roja en el armario.

El porqué de esa decisión nunca me ha quedado claro, he escuchado versiones que dicen que se hizo para reconocer a los productos oficiales de los falsificados, pero no le veo sentido. Normalmente los productos falsificados cambian los colores de los personajes, mientras que los oficiales mantienen la estética del producto original (en este caso, la serie) así que no tiene sentido hacer que tu muñeco parezca falso y que el falso, parezca original.

Quizás la decisión de cambiar la camiseta de Bart tiene algo que ver con lo que he explicado de los juguetes de las Tortugas Ninja, ya que en algunos de los primeros diseños de los Simpson, aparece con la camiseta azul (pese a que luego se la pusieron roja). Sinceramente, no creo que haya ninguna explicación lógica que justifique este hecho, y tampoco creo que eso les importe demasiado a los que encargados de la serie, pues hasta hicieron un gag sobre ello en uno de los episodios.

Inspector Gadget: The true face of the evil Dr. Claw

Cualquiera que haya visto la serie del Inspector Gadget, recordará al misterioso Dr. Claw (también conocido como Doctor Gang), el cual se pasaba todo el episodio acariciando a su gato, viendo desde un monitor como sus secuaces fallaban, lo cual terminaba comúnmente con él dando un golpe a la mesa.

El aspecto del Dr. Claw era fascinante, tenía un guantelete metálico con pinchos y… nada más, porque nunca llegábamos a verlo completamente. Cada niño se imaginó al Dr. Claw de una manera diferente (yo me lo imaginaba como un caballero medieval con una armadura de pinchos) y su “no-aspecto” hacía que fuese mucho más llamativo e interesante que cualquier otro personaje (si, incluyendo al patoso de Gadget).

Con la cancelación de la serie, todos nos quedamos con las ganas de ver el rostro de Claw. Lo lógico sería pensar que los creadores no tenían ninguno diseñado y que de haber durado la serie más años, tampoco lo habrían mostrado.

Sin embargo, la situación era bastante diferente, pues si existía un diseño completo del Dr. Claw y seguramente se creó para poder vender productos de la serie donde él apareciese, así que (como mínimo) existen dos sitios donde aparece la cara de este personaje: El muñeco oficial de la serie y el juego de Super Nintendo.

El hecho de que ambos productos, creados por diferentes compañías, mantengan el mismo diseño nos demuestra que era ese su diseño oficial y no una decisión tomada de manera unilateral por los creadores del muñeco o los desarrolladores del juego. He de admitir que en ambas ocasiones se mantuvo el misterio hasta el final, ya que Claw solo aparecía al final de juego de Super Nintendo y el muñeco que se vendía de él ¡tenía una pegatina que impedía verle la cara! (es una decisión tan rastrera como acertada, el de Marketing se lució).

¿Queréis ver la cara del Doctor Claw? Pues aquí os la dejo. A mí me decepcionó, la verdad, pero he de admitir que cualquier cosa que fuese diferente a lo que yo me imaginé de pequeño, lo habría hecho.
