Every summer a shark movie usually appears to continue the tradition that began withShark(Jaws).

Unfortunately, those films are usually not even remotely close to the work of Steven Spielberg, but that does not stop them from appearing, to increase the enormous list of films "sharksploitation"In the best of cases, we find feature films that are forgotten when leaving the cinema (such asThe Meg) or some that add some kind of novelty to the main idea, which makes them more enjoyable (likeOrca, Killer Whale). However, the most common thing is to come across uninspired films, which in the best of cases can make us laugh occasionally (likeDeep Blue Sea) or that they try, but end up causing more pain than anything else (likeSharkansas Women Prison Massacre,Sharknado,Mega Shark Vs Crocosaurus… etc).

In any case, the season for sharks (and other marine predators) begins in summer and, because of this, I have decided to seeBlack Demon(known in Spanish asBlack DemoneitherBlack Shark), a 2023 film that I avoided seeing in its day in the cinema, but which I am willing to give a chance now.

Black Demonstarts with the obligatorypresentation of the shark, which will eat two divers who are setting a bombin a construction in the middle of the ocean. After that we jump to the next day, in which we will see theNixon Oil company inspector, Paul Sturges, traveling to Baja California (Mexico) with his family, to pass inspection of a nearby oil platform.

Paul and his wife InésThey were already in the little town where the oil platform was built a decade ago, when it was built, that being Paul's first job at the Nixon Oil company. Upon arriving in the area they discover thateverything is very differentas they remembered it; There are hardly any fishermen, the businesses are closed and everything has a neglected and forgotten appearance.

The hostility of the inhabitants of the area towards Paul makes him decide to go to the platform as quickly as possible to finish the job and return quickly to get out of there. Once he takes the boat that will take him to the platform, he realizes thatno one dares to sail near it, for which a small port is prepared on the high seas with another boat, which Paul must drive to the platform by himself.

On the other hand,Paul's wife (Agnes), sees how the local inhabitants try to intimidate and even harass her andHe decides to go with his children Audrey and Tommy. To get to the oil platform they pay a large amount of money to a local fisherman.

As soon as he gets to the platform, Paul sees that something is not right.There are oil spills everywhere and it looks completely abandoned, although there are only two people left, Junior and Chato (and their dog Toro), who have been isolated on the platform for a long time. Before the explanations begin,The boat arrives with Paul's family and behind it a huge shark fin that hunts them. Thanks to the efforts by the platform's inhabitants to distract the shark with noise and flares,Paul's family arrives safe and sound, but the driver of the boat is brutally destroyed by a huge sharkable to jump many meters out of water.

The existence of the enormous shark, which they call the Black Demon,It is the reason why the town ended up ruined and the oil platform completely abandoned. Chato and Junior have come to the conclusion that it is a punishment from the god Tiáloc, who is punishing humans for destroying the Earth. Such superstitious justifications do not convince Paul, who is willing to seek a solution to the matter.

Black Demonit's a moviedifícil de calificar,principalmente porque, aunque sé queno es una buena película, tampoco es lo peor que he vistodentro del subgénero de tiburones (o Sharksploitation). Sin embargo eso no significa que no tenga muchas cosas para mejorar, como por ejemplo los personajes. Paul tiene es halo de superioridad que hemos visto tantas veces en un protagonista, y su mujer pasa de comprensiva a histérica en segundos (es curioso porque hasta los niños dicen que discuten mucho, incluso antes de que veamos su primera discusión).Los niños son, paradójicamente, los menos molestos de la familiae incluso sirven para que el espectador se entere de la mitología azteca que la película usa para justificar la existencia del Megalodon (que además produce alucinaciones).

Los mejores personajes son Cheto y Junior, y esto tampoco es decir mucho, pero hay que admitir que son muy comprensivos con Paul y su familia, pese a haberse quedado aislados en la plataforma petrolífera por culpa del propio Paul y su empresa.

Hemensaje ecologista y catastrófico, está bien pensado, pero lo hacen de una manera tan obviaque se siente forzado (incluso hay un montaje con escenas catastrofistas, más propio de un documental que trata de concienciar sobre el cambio climático que de una película de tiburones). Más sorprendente es que digan abiertamente lo que todos sabemos (pero no se suele decir), quelas grandes empresas usan a los países más desfavorecidos para hacer sus maldades,ahorrándose millones en el proceso a costa de la vida de los habitantes de la zona y luego se desentienden en caso de catástrofe (humana o natural).

El tiburón aparece poco, y en muchas ocasiones solo veremos su sombra(en parte debido al presupuesto de la película), lo cual no es necesariamente negativo, porque cuando aparece no es nada que no hayamos visto un millón de veces.El hecho de que este animal provoque alucinaciones a las personas cercanas a él es muy original, pero nunca se justifica, como tampoco se explica que el tiburón tenga la potencia suficiente como para sacar su enorme cuerpo del agua (como se muestra en la escena del bote), pero luego, en las típicas escenas en las cuales alguien cae al agua y es rescatado en el último momento, sea incapaz ni siquiera de acercarse a la superficie, retirándose al ver que sus presas ya están parcialmente fuera del agua. En este sentido,si no hubiesen puesto la primera escena del salto, no se haría tan raro verlo retirarse, pero debido a eso, queda extremadamente absurdo (igual que es absurdo que sea capaz de hacer temblar la torre entera y luego sea incapaz de morder unas escaleras que están bajo el agua con su víctima protegida por ellas.

En resumen, tenemosuna película de tiburones más mala que buena, con algunas ideas nuevas (llevadas con mejor o peor suerte) y un montón de escenas que os sonarán de otras películas (mejores y peores), lo cual me lleva a pensar, que es la típica película que no aporta nada y se puede ignorar sin ningún tipo de pesar.

Curiosities:

La escena en la cual Paul se va a poner las gafas de buceo y dice que “no tiene saliva” para escupir en ellas, es idéntica a lo que le sucede a Hooper enShark(Jaws) antes de meterse en el agua con el tiburón.
