[Playing…] Midway Arcade Origins

On this occasion I am going to talk about a compilation of classic games from the American company Midway, which closed its doors a few years ago and of which only a few programming teams have survived, such as NetherRealm Studios (authors of Mortal Kombat).

Midway Arcade Origins It compiles more than 30 games from the company, it is possible that some (or quite a few) are completely unknown to the general public, since the selection is somewhat particular, so I will give a brief description of them.

720º: Many years before the Tony Hawk video games were released, this arcade put a skateboard at our feet and left us free to roam around a small area where we could buy new equipment and enter different areas where we had to show our skills to win medals. A quite interesting game, but difficult, mainly due to the limited time we have to prepare and because the game controls are somewhat special.

APB: Curious driving game where we control a police car. The game itself consists of completing the missions that are assigned to us, without committing too many demerits, otherwise we will be eliminated.

Arch Rivals: This game could be considered the direct ancestor of the fantastic NBA Jam, as it consists of basketball games with 2 players per team. The most fun thing about the game is its street style, because not only can we stop rivals with punches, but we will have to be careful not to step on the garbage that the fans throw on the ground or we will lose the ball.

Bubbles: Extremely simple game where we control a bubble that has to clean all the dirt from the screen while avoiding harmful elements (such as blades or larger insects).

Tournament Cyberball 2072: Sports game based on American football and starring robots. It has quite a few options to make plays, but due to my lack of knowledge in that sport and the strangeness of this game, I have not been able to take advantage of it, nor do I feel like giving it too many opportunities.

Defender, Stargate/Defender 2: Two ship games where we have to eliminate hordes of enemies and save the survivors from being abducted (if not, the planet will explode and all the enemy ships will come against us). In Stargate/Defender 2 We can use portals to escape or move through different areas.

Gaunlet, Gaunlet 2: In Gaunlet, players take the place of a fantasy character (wizard, barbarian, elf...) and go through endless dungeons eliminating enemies that seem unlimited (it is advisable to eliminate the huts from which they come out) while collecting keys, potions and looking for the exit from the level. It is a fairly frenetic game, which is much more enjoyable if you play it with several friends.

Joust, Joust 2: In these games we control a guy on top of an ostrich, who has to step on his enemies, preventing them from stepping on him. In some ways it is similar to Balloon Fight from Nintendo, but with uncontrollable ostriches.

Marble Madness: We control a marble and we have to roll it through some convoluted scenarios, avoiding enemies and taking the fastest path to the finish line. The control of the marble can sometimes be improved, it may not have been adapted well at all, although of course, in the arcade this game was controlled with a trackball (a ball that the player rotated to move the marble) so there were surely difficulties when adapting it.

Pit Fighter: What made unique Pit-Fighter was its graphics, as they showed real people instead of drawn sprites, something that surprised everyone who saw it for the first time (and that inspired games like Mortal Kombat). Today it is a rough, slow and difficult game.

Rampage: One of the most famous games in this compilation and from the classic Midway arcades. In Rampage we will control a giant monster that will have to destroy cities, defend itself from the army and eat people who come within its reach, all with a very characteristic humor (when losing a life the monster will become a person again and will move away from the screen, covering its private parts).

Rampart: In this game we take possession of a castle and after placing our artillery we have to aim at the enemy invaders that are approaching by sea. After each war we will have a few seconds to repair our walls with special pieces. If we do not manage to close the wall completely, we will lose, but if we succeed, we will continue defending our territories and adding more cannons to our arsenal.

Robotron 2084: Our character has to eliminate enemies and save people, to achieve this he can shoot in any direction (using the right joystick). Surely Robotron was the inspiration for later action games like Smash TV and Total Carnage.

Root Beer Tapper: In this game we control a waiter who has to throw beers across the bar until all the customers are out of the bar. This would be easy if it weren't for the fact that we have 4 bars to take care of, and we also have to recover the empty jugs, because if one falls to the ground we lose a life. Tapper es un juego rápido y adictivo donde tenemos que ser multitarea, pues los clientes no paran de llegar y una vez hemos llegado a los niveles más difíciles es muy fácil cometer un error fatal, como por ejemplo lanzar una cerveza de más y que esta caiga al suelo, lo cual también nos quitará una vida. Desde mi punto de vista, uno de los más adictivos del recopilatorio.

Satan’s Hollow: Este juego es un mata-marcianos al estilo Space Invaders either Galaga, pero además de acabar con los enemigos tendremos que ir moviéndonos de izquierda a derecha para arrastrar piezas de puente y así poder cruzar el río de lava para poder enfrentarnos a Satan. El estilo de juego es muy adictivo y la mecánica de tener que ir haciendo un puente es de esas que nos tientan a arriesgarnos más de lo necesario para terminarlo pronto, afortunadamente contamos con un escudo que nos protegerá durante tiempo limitado.

Sinistar: Juego  de naves de un estilo similar a Asteroids, pero con scroll y donde además de evitar los meteoritos debemos destruir a los enemigos que nos acecharán. Al igual que en otros juegos de Midway, hay una parte de la pantalla que nos sirve como mapa para saber donde están y de donde vendrán los enemigos.

Smash TV, Total Carnage: Ambos juegos nos hacen controlar a un personaje que puede disparar hacia cualquier direccion (usando el segundo joystick) y que tendrán que sobrevivir a centenares de enemigos y jefes finales enormes. Son juegos muy adictivos y frenéticos, ideal para jugar acompañado.

Spy Hunter, Spy Hunter 2: Pese a que los dos juegos son claramente distintos (hay un gran salto de uno a otro) ambos se basan en controlar a un coche y evitar o eliminar a nuestros rivales usando todo tipo de armamento.

Super Sprint, Championship Sprint, Super Off Road: Juegos de carreras donde vemos todo el circuito desde una vista aérea. Las carreras son rápidas y competitivas de manera que tendremos que dominar rápidamente el control si no queremos quedar descalificados. Super Off Road vendría a ser una evolución mejorada de los dos Sprint.

Toobin’: Este juego es una competición de nadar subidos en un flotador, con los joysticks controlamos las manos de nuestro personaje y tenemos que intentar conseguir el máximo de puntos y llegar lo antes posible al final del nivel, evitando que se nos pinche el flotador.

Vindicator part 2: Juego donde controlamos un tanque y debemos eliminar a los enemigos. El juego es bastante difícil, principalmente debido a su control que es un tanto complejo (y se volverá más cuando compremos mejoras, como girar la torreta del tanque). No es mal juego, pero requiere paciencia dominarlo.

Wizard of War: ¿Te atreves a introducirte en laberínticos pasillos infestados de enemigos mientras una horrible voz robótica te amenaza y se ríe de ti? Pues eso es lo que es este juego, que técnicamente ha quedado obsoleto en muchos sentidos, pero sigue jugándose bastante bien, pese a ser bastante repetitivo.

Xenophobe: Juego de avance lateral donde tendremos que eliminar a diferentes tipos de extraterrestres que salen a nuestro paso. Si recibimos golpes fuertes, nuestro personaje retrocederá e incluso se le caerán sus armas al suelo dejándolo temporalmente indefenso. Es un juego bastante interesante, pero el control es algo complejo y la pantalla esta pensada para jugar a 3 jugadores, de manera que si jugamos en solitario, el 66% de la pantalla estará sin utilizar.

Xybots: Curioso juego donde recorreremos pasillos “en 3D” eliminando a robots, mientras buscamos la salida del nivel (o algún atajo que nos ahorre tiempo y  nos dé más puntos de bonificación). Visualmente es agradable y aunque el control se haga algo raro al principio, una vez te acostumbras es un juego muy agradable.

Básicamente esto es lo que nos ofrece Midway Arcade Origins, una buena cantidad de juegos clásicos de diversión inmediata, posibilidad de multijugador local, configurar los controles y la apariencia (para aumentar el zoom, por ejemplo) de los juegos, logros y la posibilidad de compartir nuestros récords con jugadores de todo el mundo.

Sin embargo considero que hay cosas que podrían haber hecho mucho mejor, como por ejemplo, los juegos incluidos, que son superados en número y variedad en la trilogía Midway Arcade Treasures publicada durante la época de las consolas de 128 bits, donde además se incluían algunos juegos ligados eternamente al nombre de la compañía, como los Mortal Kombat.

Quizás la selección de juegos es tan escasa y se omitieron juegos concretos debido a que querían centrarse en los orígenes de Midway (tal y como indica el título del juego) pero aun así seguirían faltando juegos clásicos y sobrarían cosas como Pit Fighter. Además si tanto les importaba ceñirse a los orígenes, habría estado bien que se hubiesen esforzado un poco más y nos diesen información sobre los juegos, como se crearon, cuantas versiones tuvieron, su historia, su legado… o incluso hacer un pequeño documental sobre los juegos, tal y como hicieron cuando lanzaron Mortal Kombat V  para Gamecube, PlayStation 2 y Xbox que además del documental incluía un montón de imágenes de juegos anteriores, bocetos, fotos curiosas sobre los que habían trabajado en la saga e incluso un videoclip musical.  Esa es la clase de cosas que un fan agradece, conocer un poco más el aspecto humano e histórico de los juegos y disfrutarlos a otro nivel.

Otro fallo que veo son los controles en algunos juegos, aunque teniendo en cuenta que muchas recreativas tenían controles especiales (como el trackball) entiendo que hicieron lo que pudieron a la hora de adaptarlos a un mando, menos comprensible me parece que no incluyesen un multijugador online.

Así pues, pese a que creo que es un buen recopilatorio, considero que se ha perdido la oportunidad de hacer el recopilatorio definitivo de Midway y veo mucho más interesantes los Midway Arcade Treasures que este. Sin embargo, no voy a negar que me lo he pasado muy bien jugando a este juego y es por eso que creo que si os gustan los arcades clásicos y lo veis muy barato, vale la pena hacerse con él.
