Altheia: The Wrath of AferiIt comes as one of the most ambitious proposals from the Brazilian studio MarsLit Games. This action RPG transports us to Atarassia, a fantasy world inspired by the rich mythology of Brazil, where we follow the story of Lili, a guardian in conflict with her family legacy, and Sadi, a magical monk with his own inner demons. During approximately 15 hours of play, we discover a title that shines in its artistic and narrative conception, but that still struggles against certain technical challenges.

Visuals and Atmosphere

The artistic section is, without a doubt, the greatest achievement of the game. The environments are carefully designed with a vibrant color palette that, according to its creators, is inspired by Studio Ghibli productions, but with a very strong identity of its own. From dense rainforests to ancient temples, each area exudes a unique personality. The designs of characters and creatures show a clear influence of Brazilian mythology, incorporating beings such as the Curupira or the Boitatá in a creative and respectful way.

Although the creators highlight Ghibli and Zelda as influences, and that this is noticeable a bit, I cannot help but mention that in terms of textures and details, the game can be a bit basic. It's okay in my opinion, but it's also not super standout or memorable.

The animations, while generally fluid, have occasional stiffness during motion transitions. The light and particle effects during spells and special abilities are particularly impressive, creating visually spectacular moments during the most intense combat.

Gameplay and Combat System

The core of the game is based on the cooperation between the two protagonists. Lili specializes in close combat with her sword, while Sadi uses ranged magic and support skills. The combat system requires a conscious strategy, especially against bosses and more powerful enemies, where coordination between both characters becomes essential.

The environmental puzzles represent one of the most successful aspects of the game. From manipulating elements of the environment to solving puzzles based on the mythology present in the world, these challenges maintain a well-balanced difficulty that rewards observation and logical thinking.

However, the skill progression system could benefit from more depth. Although there are skill trees for both characters, many improvements are limited to numerical increases rather than offering new abilities that substantially change the gameplay.

Narrative and Characters

The main story explores themes of family legacy, responsibility and reconciliation with the past through a narrative that, although it follows certain conventions of the genre, is distinguished by its emotionally resonant treatment. The dialogues between Lili and Sadi evolve organically throughout the adventure, developing a dynamic that mixes moments of tension with others of genuine camaraderie.

The side quests, although variable in quality, substantially enrich the world of Atarassia, exploring legends and myths of Brazilian culture in creative ways. The inclusion of Brazilian Portuguese vocals (with Spanish subtitles) adds an additional layer of cultural authenticity.

Technical Aspects and Optimization

The game has some technical problems that, although they do not ruin the experience, do affect the immersion. Occasional framerate drops were observed in VFX-heavy areas, as well as somewhat long loading times between areas. Companion AI can behave erratically in complex combat situations, requiring constant micromanagement.

The developers have shown an active commitment to post-release support, implementing patches that address several of these issues. The PC version offers the most polished experience, with better loading times and greater overall stability.

Conclusion

Altheia: The Wrath of Aferirepresents a significant step for the Brazilian video game industry, offering an experience that competently combines elements of action, exploration and narrative. Although some technical and design aspects could be refined, the game stands out for its unique artistic identity and its respectful incorporation of Brazilian cultural elements.

Recommended especially for players who enjoy action adventures with a narrative emphasis and for those interested in discovering different cultural perspectives within the fantasy genre. With an introductory price of $24.99, it offers a substantial experience that, with continued tweaks from the developers, could become a benchmark for indie RPGs.

Altheia: The Wrath of Aferi is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
