[HorrorScience] Fall – Vertigo (2022)

Recently, I heard about a movie called Fall (which, as I understand it, is also known as Vertigo either Drop in some countries), which, as I was told, was very good and kept you tense throughout the entire film.

Not knowing anything about it, I discovered that it was recent (from the year 2022) and that it had a budget of 3 million dollars (meager compared to the figures that are currently moving), which distanced it from typical Hollywood films. In addition to having a very limited cast of actors, among which is  Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan for those who are fans of The Walking Dead).

All of those features caught my attention, so I decided to give the film a chance to see if it was really worth it or if, on the contrary, it was going to be a disappointment.

Fall starts with Becky (Grace Caroline Currey), her boyfriend Dan (Mason Gooding) and her friend Hunter (Virginia Gardner) climbing a mountain. Everything happens as planned until Dan falls into the void and dies (This is mandatory in movies that try to impose fear using height as a means).

A year has passed and Becky is unable to get over the death of her husband. She keeps calling his phone number to hear his voice and gets drunk to get through the days, which obviously worries her father (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who apparently didn't have much appreciation for Dan, but, above all, worries when he sees his daughter depressed, wasting her life going from bar to bar.

Shortly after, Hunter appears, who has spent a whole year traveling and climbing, while publishing his adventures on social networks to earn money. She convinces Becky that I accompanied her to climb an abandoned tower of an old antenna located in the middle of nowhere. The idea of scatter Dan's ashes from above of the tower has an effect on Becky, who ends up accepting.

Once they arrive at the desolate place in the middle of the desert where only the radio tower is located, both girls begin their particular adventure. The ascent is somewhat complicated, but once they reach the top and throw Dan's ashes, the problems begin, because when trying to go down, The entire ladder that allowed them to climb falls down, leaving the two of them completely isolated. at the top, without cover and with the only company of the vultures that prowl the desert.

Fall It's a movie with a very simple premise and few characters, and the truth is that sometimes you want to see something like that where the entire movie revolves around a simple idea that keeps you attentive at all times (like, for example, Duel – The devil on wheels by Steven Spielberg).

What surprises me most about the movie is that the girls They are climbing the radio antenna tower when not even half an hour of footage has passed, which means there's an hour of film with the two of them trapped at the top, which surprised me, because the possibilities, once they are up, are very limited, but I have to admit that The result is more than acceptable and it did not take me long..

There are only four characters and two of them (Becky's boyfriend and her father) only appear for a few minutes., which I think may be disappointing for those who believe that Jeffrey Dean Morgan stars in the movie (I'm pretty sure he was hired just to have a famous actor as a teaser), so the focus of the movie remains on the two friends, Becky and Hunter. Normally, one of the characters is sensible and cautious and the other is the one with crazy ideas. and causes the events of the film to happen. In this case it works like that, but you have to keep in mind that Becky was also crazy like Hunter until her boyfriend died and she fell into a more than obvious depression.

I say this because during the film we see how Hunter drags Becky to climb the tower and that makes us see her as a victim, but I repeat, that feeling is false, because the first scene of Fall nos demuestra que Becky tiene una mentalidad muy similar a la de Hunter. Si hubiese desarrollado miedo a las alturas tras la muerte de Dan (lo cual habría sido lógico) sí que habría sido una víctima, pero, en lugar de eso, nos encontramos con que ella simplemente está deprimida y no quiere hacer nada que le haga divertirse, de manera que, por estúpido que parezca, la idea de su amiga para sacarla de su pozo de tristeza no es tan mala (teniendo en cuenta la mentalidad y las aficiones que tienen ambas).

El segundo personaje principal es Hunter, una persona adicta a la adrenalina que hace cosas locas para “sentirse viva”. Para hacer ver a Hunter como un personaje “más estúpido” que a Becky, le añaden el hecho de que es Youtuber y se graba haciendo peripecias (y estupideces) para conseguir seguidores en las redes sociales y obtener así más dinero con el cual financiar sus viajes.

El tema de las redes sociales creo que es bastante interesante, pues, aunque no caen en el tópico de decir que son malas y todo eso, sí que se hace hincapié en algunas cosas, como que Hunter tenga que actuar como una auténtica imbécil para llamar la atención de sus usuarios o use un sujetador para que sus pechos parezcan más grandes y se asegure de que estos aparecen en los planos que graba (lo cual le asegurará más seguidores), pero lo más interesante de este punto es que pese a tener 60mil seguidores, nadie puede ayudar a Hunter, una vez está atrapada en la torre. El hecho de que las protagonistas mencionen que algunas personas han muerto haciéndose selfies en lugares altos cuando buscaban obtener más “likes”, nos dice dos cosas sobre la película: lo primero, que, por imposible que parezca, hay gente capaz de intentar cosas como las que hacen Hunter y Becky, y lo segundo, que las personas, aun siendo conscientes de que otros han muerto por ello, son capaces de hacerlo (supongo que por la mentalidad de “a mí no me va a pasar” que todos tenemos dentro en mayor o menor medida).

Inicialmente, Hunter me pareció un personaje pesado e incluso molesto, pero, cuando la cosa se pone realmente fea y quedan atrapadas, se nota que es ella la que carga con la cordura de ambas chicas, convenciendo a su amiga de que todo ira bien, proponiendo ideas y asegurando que vendrá ayuda (aunque, por su rostro, se puede ver claramente que piensa lo contrario). En un momento dado de la película, intentan crear un conflicto entre ambas, pero queda en nada y se lo podían haber ahorrado.

Conforme avanzaba la película y se acercaba a la parte final, me imaginé varios posibles finales y me alegra decir que me equivoqué en todos. No conseguí adivinar cómo resolverían la crisis, pese a tener una idea sencilla y eso es gracias al ingenioso giro que hay al final del metraje, donde consiguen solucionar un problema, que inicialmente era imposible de resolver, de una manera muy inteligente.

Resumiendo, Fall es una película interesante, con momentos tensos y algunos planos hermosos que contrastan con lo peligrosa que es la situación que viven las dos chicas. Para disfrutarla, solo hay que creerse que dos personas son tan tontas como para subir a una torre abandonada por afición (lo cual no debería ser difícil de creer, teniendo en cuenta que en la vida real hay gente que hace estas cosas). Si superamos esa parte, disfrutaremos de unos buenos momentos de tensión.

Es cierto que no es perfecta, hay varios clichés innecesarios. Tal vez le sobren unos 10-15 minutos y, si nos ponemos a pensar fríamente en lo que hemos visto en la película, descubriremos que había una manera relativamente sencilla y rápida de obtener usando el dron que tienen las chicas, pero durante el primer visionado tal vez no se nos ocurre, así que podemos llegar a entender por qué a ellas tampoco.

Curiosidades de la película:

• Para rodar las escenas de la cima de la torre, se creó una copia de la parte superior de la misma y se colocó en una montaña, de manera que, aunque las actrices solo estaban a unos metros del suelo, la altura en la cual se encontraban sí era equivalente a la de la torre de la película (lo cual ayudó a rodar muchos planos y a incluir elementos como el viento).
• Antes de su estreno, se sometió a la película a una autocensura para borrar la palabra “fuck”, ya que se decía demasiadas veces y, si la quitaban, la película podría pasar por PG-13, lo cual permitiría llegar a un público más amplio en el cine.
• La torre de la película está basada en la antena real KXTV/KOVR situada en California.
