Enigma of Fear left me with a mixed feeling from the start. Developed by Dumativa and Cellbit, and released in November 2024 for PC (with later versions on consoles), this title places you as Mia, a young detective investigating the disappearance of her father within a mysterious place called the Perimeter. The game attempts to fuse elements of survival horror, investigation and puzzles, but the result is uneven: some moments capture interest, while others feel clunky or repetitive.

The plot: A quest that reveals dark secrets

You control Mia as she explores an environment that shouldn't exist, collecting clues and solving mysteries involving supernatural entities. The story is built through documents, dialogues and discoveries that little by little reveal a broader background, with touches of cosmic horror and elements of the universeParanormal Ordercreated by Cellbit.

The narrative moves at a leisurely pace, focused on the investigation and unraveling what happened to Mia's father. There are moments when the story generates curiosity, especially when you connect clues about rituals or presences that haunt the Perimeter. However, the development feels somewhat linear and sometimes predictable, without surprising as much as one would expect in a game of this style. The focus on deduction is interesting, but the execution doesn't always consistently maintain tension.

Gameplay: Puzzles that demand attention and combat that is not entirely convincing

The core of the game revolves around investigation: you examine scenes, collect evidence, and solve puzzles that require logic and observation. Some puzzles are well designed and force you to think carefully, integrating reasonably well with the exploration of the environment. You can move between areas, interact with objects and combine items to advance.

Where the game falters the most is in combat. The fights against monsters feel basic and unpolished: the aim and attack system is clumsy at times, with controls that don't always respond as you expect. It's not the main focus of the title, but when it appears, it detracts from the flow rather than adding tension. The duration is considerable (around 20 hours for the main story), and there is backtracking that can become tedious, especially if you get stuck on a puzzle, which will surely happen more than once.

Graphics and atmosphere: An attractive visual style with lights and shadows

The visual section combines pixel art for the characters with 3D environments, creating a contrast that has its charm and evokes a certain retro air. Some settings convey a dark and mysterious atmosphere, with lighting that helps generate unease. However, not everything looks so polished: there are times when transitions or certain effects feel unrefined, and exploration doesn't always take full advantage of the design's potential.

The atmosphere attempts to be oppressive, with environments that suggest danger and isolation, but it doesn't always manage to maintain that pressure consistently. At times it feels more like a puzzle game with touches of horror than a survival horror proper.

Sound and dubbing: An aspect that leaves something to be desired

The ambient audio does its job, with sounds that accompany exploration and encounters. However, the dubbing (especially in Spanish) is quite poor. The performances sound forced, with line deliveries that lack naturalness and sometimes break immersion. The original game is in Portuguese, and although I understand that versions in other languages may have limitations, the final result does not help the story resonate more strongly.

Personal opinion: An ambitious proposal with irregular results

Enigma of Fear has interesting ideas, especially in its approach to investigation and some puzzles that require deduction. The concept of exploring a non-existent place and unraveling paranormal mysteries has potential, and the visual style creates striking moments. Even so, the clumsy combat, irregular pacing, and sub-par dubbing take a lot away from the whole. The indie ambition is noticeable, but also the limitations in polish and execution.

It is not a title I would recommend without reservation. It can entertain those who enjoy puzzles and mysterious atmospheres, but its problems in combat and audio make the experience feel less rounded than it could have been.

Conclusion: An investigation that does not come together

Enigma of Fear is primarily available on PC through Steam. If the idea of combining investigation with supernatural elements appeals to you and you're willing to overlook some technical and voice-over hiccups, you can check it out. Otherwise, there are other indie horror proposals that solve their mechanics better. Tell me in comments if you tried this game and what you thought!
