[Meeting…] Rompetechos

The Bruguera publishing house has seen the birth of characters as numerous as they are varied. However, some experts, such as those from the Bruguera humor factory exhibition, have divided them into different categories. Although some of them are excessively broad in their definition (for example, there is a category of "frustrated lives" and another for "characters who personify incompetence and work apathy", as if any of them did not meet those requirements), the truth is that it does allow us to get a general idea of ​​its theme and approach. Specifically, today I am going to talk about one of those who have the label of “happy and unconscious”, that is, who live in their world and see things in a very different way than normal people (the latter in an absolutely literal way). I am referring to Breaker, of the great Francisco Ibanez.

A short and stubborn man

When a passer-by encounters Rompetechos and suffers one of his catastrophic mistakes, he usually goes to the nearest guard to report what happened, referring to him as “a short and stubborn man”. This very graphic definition fits quite well with the aspect of Ibáñez's character. We are facing a type of short stature, wide head and round nose. Carry glasses, mustache, dress with a black suit and presents a notable baldness, with a few hairs on the neck combed forward as a “curtain”. The irony of its appearance with respect to its name is more than sought after, since according to the author, it completely reversed the original meaning of the name proposed by the head of the publishing house.

The changes experienced in its appearance have been negligible. because by 1964 (his first appearance) Ibáñez had almost consolidated the foundations of his drawing style, the one that would reach its fullness from the beginning of the 70s. On the other hand, I sense that Ibáñez must have had a fairly clear mental image of his character, since apparently all his previous sketches met the same basic characteristics. In terms of height and myopia, he is similar to Mr. Magoo. According to the former director of the magazine Mordadelo (Vicente Palomares), one of his possible inspirations could have been the member of the editorial staff Ernesto Pérez Mas, something never mentioned by Ibáñez himself.

Blinder than a bat

As I already mentioned in the introduction, Rompetechos falls within the group of characters “happy and unconscious”, although Juan Antonio Ramírez, professor of Art History and specialist in comics, used the less friendly term of “marginalized”. He believes he lives a completely normal daily life, but in reality he creates scenes and disasters wherever he goes. This is due to its acute myopia that makes you see things very differently than they really are.

The outline of their adventures is very similar. The beginning is very everyday, whether it is because he is going to buy something, work at his new job, or visit a friend or his uncle Lentejo, the one from town. What doesn't change is what happens next. Breaker you will go to the wrong place and confuse the signs or external elements with what he has come to look for, will ask or ask his interlocutor something totally crazy or insulting in his eyesand finally, our protagonist will be hit, leaving him with bumps and black eyes (although on occasion he shows that he is not one-handed either). In between, hilarious conversations usually occur that degenerate into heated ones. arguments and insultsthat precede the cakes. As a culmination, the myopic character will go complain to the guard, which will turn out to be anything but that. Sometimes, when the consequences of his actions are more serious, he will end up in madhouse or jail accused of being a hooligan or “dangerous anarchist.”

On some occasions Ibáñez has expressed his identification with Rompetechos because the author had vision problems from very early on, which refutes the criticism leveled at him for making fun of those who suffered from this condition. Therefore, it is not surprising that he is one of his favorite characters.

Rompetechos and their cameos

It is a fact that Ibáñez often resorts to cameos to give other of his characters the opportunity to make an appearance. This is evident in the adventures of Mortadelo and Filemón, who currently have absolute dominance in the cartoonist's agenda. Sometimes these characters will play a vital role in the adventures of the T.I.A. detectives, such as Button Sacarino in witness for the prosecution (1984) o Tete Rocket (1981) en la aventura homónima. Otras veces tendrán un rol más discreto y puntual, como Pepe Gotera y Otilio. Pero si hay uno que aparezca de forma relativamente regular, ese es Rompetechos. Aunque se trate de situaciones relativamente breves, y que frecuentemente quede relegado a un mero gag de fondo, es prácticamente uno más de la serie, y no le faltará la oportunidad para hacer gala de su peculiar falta de vista. No obstante, en ocasiones sí quecontará con un papel relativamente destacado en la trama. Este fenómeno no es nuevo, puesto que anteriormente ya lo haría en otras obras suyas, como en 13 Rúe del Percebe.

El humor de este personaje se ha vuelto tan universal y recurrente que también podemos verle en historietas de otros autores. Eso ocurre en Pafman, el patoso superhéroe de Joaquín Cera. Mortadelo y Filemón ya hicieron acto de aparición en algún momento, tanto en sus antiguas historietas cortas como en las nuevas (en concreto enAgente Cero Cero Patatero), pero Rompetechos también tendría su propia actuación estelar.

Su figura se ha asociado tanto a las aventuras de Mortadelo y Filemón que el salto de éstos a la gran pantalla fue indefectiblemente acompañado del del propio Rompetechos, interpretado por el actor Emilio Gavira (incluyendo su voz en la película de animación). Por desgracia, no salió demasiado favorecido con el cambio. En La gran aventura de Mortadelo y Filemón (2003), Javier Fesser nos lo presentaba como un personaje gruñón y, sobre todo, bastante fascista, convirtiéndole en una especie de Martínez el Facha en miniatura. Todo fue un capricho del director, pues tenía muy claro que «un tipo bajito, con bigote y que está siempre cabreado tiene que ser facha». Esto sólo demuestra la visión distorsionada, interesada y tendenciosa que tiene del personaje. En realidad, la personalidad de Rompetechos es pacífica, casi despreocupada, y siempre se muestra solícito a ayudar a sus amigos y familiares cuando lo necesitan, aunque esto genere numerosos desastres causados por su mala vista. Si a menudo se muestra enfado se debe a que cree que le están ofreciendo un servicio deficiente, o que directamente se están burlando de él, aunque a ojos de los demás el bromista sea él.

Con el cambio de director en Misión: salvar la Tierra (2008), la actitud malencarada del personaje se mantuvo, pero abandonó su carácter fascista. En la última adaptación cinematográfica (y la primera de animación), Contra Jimmy el Cachondo (2014), se notó en cierta medida el retorno de Fesser. Volvió a ser conservador cuanto menos, aunque no tan descarado como en su primera aparición, y hasta tuvo ocasión de mostrar cierto talante filantrópico. Además tendrá un papel importante hasta cierto punto, desbordando los planteamientos del simple cameo.

Conclusion and recommendations

Rompetechos es uno de esos personajes que podemos calificar como incomprendidos. Su mala vista le hace blanco de infinidad de problemas, a cada cual más disparatado que el anterior. No obstante, siempre se mantendrá en sus trece, bajo la máxima de que él está en lo cierto y los demás son los que se equivocan (o directamente son unos gamberros). Sin duda estamos ante uno de los personajes más divertidos y disparatados de Ibáñez (si no el que más).

Debido a la fama de la que disfruta, es más sencillo encontrar monográficos suyos que de otros personajes de la antigua editorial Bruguera, con la excepción de Mortadelo y Filemón, Superlópez y algún otro. Existe un buen surtido de tomos recopilatorios publicados por Ediciones B que se mantienen en el stock de las librerías. En primer lugar, cabe destacar el especial 40 aniversario correspondiente al Super Humor número 37, publicado en 2004 y que todavía puede encontrarse en librerías. Por otro lado, disponemos de distintos números de los Magos del Humor, correspondientes a los títulos ¡La vista es la que trabaja! (#115, 2007), ¡Vivir para ver! (#128, 2009), y ¡Echando un vistazo! (#135, 2010).

Entre los cómics de Mortadelo y Filemón en las que hace acto de aparición, sugiero ¡Rapto tremendo! (2004). En este caso, el mismísimo Ibáñez es secuestrado y los dos torpes agentes deberán seguir las pistas del testigo ocular del rapto. Este no es otro que Rompetechos. También recomiendo su última película, tanto por el papel destacado que tiene el personaje como por ser un poco mejor tratado que en otras aventuras, a pesar de conservar algunos tics artificiales, como ya he mencionado.
