In the world of comics, as in that of fiction stories in general, there are diverse but more or less stereotyped characters. To put extreme cases, we could find everything from the typical protagonist who is all goodness and self-denial to his nemesis, the evil bad guy who is dedicated to doing evil above anything else. Now, there are also antiheroic figures, characters who, without being villains or even necessarily evil, do not stand out precisely for their virtues. These characters who exude a certain selfishness, antipathy or meanness do not usually endear themselves to people, but precisely because they deviate from the clichés of the “good” side make them interesting. This is the case of our friend Phoncible Bone, better known as Phoney Bone, to which I will dedicate this week's section.

Fone Bone's evil cousin

[Meeting…] Phoney Bone
Although similar to its cousin, Phoney Bone's appearance is perfectly recognizable.

For those who have not noticed it because of his physical appearance and his last name, we must start by saying that Phoney is not a human, but a bone, a fictional race created by American cartoonist Jeff Smith. These are usually of short stature, whitish skin, and with a large nose, oval head and eyes like black dots, narrow and elongated. It is difficult not to evoke other cartoon characters like Snoopy or Casper. Although we do not know to what extent he was inspired by them or not, the truth is that they are part of the same artistic aesthetic, known as Cartoon. Of course, it is not the prevailing style in American comics, as is the case ofMarvelandD.C., much more realistic and aggressive.

Physically, Phoney does not differ much from the rest of his peers, particularly from Fone Bone, his cousin and protagonist of the story, but his distinctive features appear quite well marked even if they are reduced to only two. On the one hand, one grumpy expression almost permanent, which will only turn into a greedy, self-satisfied and malicious smile when he finds himself forging one of his plans for his own benefit. On the other hand, a black t-shirt with a gold star on the chest. He lacks any other type of clothing, fulfilling the widespread cliché in cartoons of being naked from the waist down.

In fact, Its appearance has changed very little over time. During the adventures presented in self-published publications, which over time would end up giving way to a trilogy of three volumes each, the author's style will be the same from beginning to end for all the characters. Even in the comic strip series thorn, published during his youth in the university magazine The Lartern between 1982 and 1986, where the crudeness of the drawing is just a sketch of its subsequent evolution, Bone's sullen cousin held the same identifying marks, except that he initially wore a white, high-necked T-shirt.

In reality, Phoney's first appearance came in the university magazine The Lartern in 1982, shortly after his cousin's. Many ideas from those strips would be reused for the series, such as the encounter with the dragon.

The richest Bone in Boneville

[Meeting…] Phoney Bone
Although it may seem incredible, the "straw that broke the camel's back" was not this.

Judging from what we've seen so far, Fone Bone's peculiar cousin doesn't seem like a very good guy, and he really isn't. In fact, has a somewhat sour character, bad-tempered and even choleric, in addition to selfish and extremely narcissistic. Even though he proclaims time and time again to be the richest Bone in Boneville, his greed knows no limits. He was always characterized by his intentions to increase his already enormous fortune by any means necessary, even if this meant getting involved in shady businesses and corruption with little or no morality. This ended up being his downfall, since was expelled from the city for a certain misdeed of his that was the last straw. If he was able to escape in one piece, it was thanks to the help of his cousins Fone Bone and Smiley Bone.

This is how their journey begins that will take them to a fantasy place known as el Valle, que terminará configurando el arquetipo de viaje iniciático tan común en las historias de aventuras.
