There are not many antagonists of the numerous Mario spin-offs that have risen to fame, since it is Bowser who usually bears the burden as the game's villain. In fact, they may feel lucky if they appear in a discreet background as filler characters in their sports spin-offs (Birdo or Waluigi, for example), but many directly fall into complete ostracism (who remembers bad guys like Wart or Tatanga?). If there is an exception to that rule, it is Wario, final boss of the Game Boy title Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. This parody of the plumber himself pleased fans, to such an extent that just two years later, around 1994, Nintendo decided to make a direct sequel to this title, with Yokoi again at the helm of the project but with Wario himself as the protagonist. That's how it was born Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (It is significant how this is reduced to the status of a subtitle).

Map of Kitchen Island.

As a sequel, the plot has clear continuity with its predecessor. As you remember, Wario had been defeated and expelled from Mario's Castle, frustrating his plans to live in a fortress of his own. However, it did not take long for him to hatch new plans to achieve his long-awaited goal. The opportunity presented itself when he received news that the giant statue of Peach, made of solid gold, had been stolen by the Brown Sugar Pirates, commanded by Captain Syrup, who would become his main nemesis in the first installments of the saga. Therefore, Wario sets course for Kitchen Island, home of the pirates, to get that statue before Mario. The price of it plus the treasures he looted from the pirates would be enough to build a castle bigger than that of his archenemy and make him die of envy. With this simple and materialistic argument, a Wario full of charisma and personality made his triumphant entry, who would soon demonstrate that he was here to stay.

The upward trend in graphic quality witnessed in Super Mario Land 2 It continues in the installment starring his alterego, to the point that, without being as abysmal as with respect to the first Game Boy Mario, it is quite noticeable. All the elements that appear in the game (enemies, objects, backgrounds...) are represented on an even larger scale and with a higher degree of detail. Also worthy of review is the artistic design of the settings and mapping, reminiscent of the style followed by Mario games. The worlds are very original and varied, with culinary-themed areas that give it a very picturesque appearance.

Wario waving at the title screen.

But without a doubt, its characteristic feature lies in its expressiveness. Faced with the hieratic appearance that Mario presented, we see a more expressive character, with a repertoire of facial and body gestures that he will display at certain moments, quite an achievement considering that this is a Game Boy game. Despite the bad attitude that the character displays at all times, it gives the impression that, unlike the plumber, we are faced with a flesh and blood protagonist endowed with his own emotions.

The style of the musical themes is different from that of its rival. Have a slower and more parsimonious pace, and reflect the antiheroic, comical and boastful nature of the character. They are also varied and original, with a quite notable total number of themes, and unlike Six Golden Coins, not all of them are variables of the main theme, corresponding to this an important fraction although not clearly dominant. The themes perfectly accompany the action, making its soundtrack one of those that should be taken into account on the Nintendo laptop. The sound effects are the same or more varied than those of said game.

Flying with the jet helmet.

As heir to the Mario Land saga, the gameplay retains certain elements that are reminiscent of the plumber's adventures. We will find blocks, coins, invincibility stars and enemies to jump on, which will give you a heart point (similar to the meter of the enemies killed in Super Mario Land 2). We also meet the chronometer that marks the time limit and the coin counter, whose importance grows spectacularly along with the greed of its protagonist. Furthermore, as in Super Mario Land 2, it is possible to save the game in the middle of each level (this time paying a "toll" with a ten gold coin) and be able to play in three different files. As for the items, they are the Garlic (the equivalent of Mario's Super Mushroom), pouting (the Bull Pout to increase his physical strength, the Jet Pout to fly for a short time, and the Dragon Pout to turn his hat into a flamethrower), and stars of invincibility, which will appear rarely and will also make you faster. When Wario is injured he transforms into Little Wario, and if he is already in that state, lose a life.
