Since 1939, with the triumph of the “insurgents” or “national side” against the government of the Second Republic in the Spanish Civil War (whose outbreak was eighty years ago), two old paradigms adapted to the new state of things gained new vigor. The first was the Crusade, that old holy war against the infidel, long fallen into disuse, but dusted off for the sake of the “crusade against Bolshevism” (a term that they turned into a disaster box into which to put the entire left, from communists to anarchists, social democrats and the republican petty bourgeoisie, and which was especially effective in gaining the favors of the fascist regimes and the complicit retraction of the parliamentary powers). The second was that of the “unity of Spain”, which would have as its starting point the reign of the Catholic Monarchs.

This is how a myriad of political pamphlets of all kinds, supposedly historical works, school books, etc. proliferated, in which these two concepts were practically omnipresent. Of course, the world of comics did not escape this ideological climate, which, after the war, reemerged stronger than ever by serving as an escape valve for a generation overwhelmed by the deprivations of the postwar period. The most famous example is The Mask Warrior, the popular and extensive series created in 1943 by Manuel Gago García for Editorial Valenciana.

The masked count

The story begins when the Count of Roca relates that an enigmatic character (who we will later learn responds to the name of Adolfo de Moncada) appeared before him as his son. Despite having been born after kidnapping of his wife, the Countess of Torres, by the fearsome Muslim king Ali Khan, He claimed that he was conceived shortly after the kidnapping. Believing himself to be the biological son of Ali Khan, shortly after coming of age, he became the best warrior in his army and He fought countless Christian armies until his mother confessed the truth.. When the little wren found out, he tried to kill him, but The countess stood between them, thus sacrificing her life.. Furious, the already known scion of the Count of Roca defeats Ali Khan, whom he believes he has killed, and abandons the territory that until then he had believed to be his father.

First appearance of the Mask Warrior.

After narrating his dramatic story, the protagonist solemnly swears before the count that he will do everything possible to prove that he is really his son and that he will fight the enemies of the Cross to the end to purge his sins. After the double flashback, a warrior appears riding a horse named Centella and dressed in clothing that will make him famous: a short tunic with a large cross printed and adjusted with a belt, which covers a chain of maya that emerges through arms and head, a helmet and, above all, its characteristic mask. It won't take us long to see that both are the same character (it wasn't very difficult to guess, anyway), nor will we wait long to know (both us and the protagonist) that his hated enemy is still alive

[Meeting…] The Warrior of the Mask
First meeting with Ana María, who believes the story of the warrior.

This is the beginning of the adventures of the Warrior of the Mask, who, under the total anonymity that his mask provides him to avoid being recognized by Muslims and Christians who were victims of his “Moor” stage. and in complete solitude (at least initially, since he soon had the unconditional support of his squire Fernando and the occasional help of Don Luis, the Count of the Picos), he embarks on a path of redemption. Whether done on purpose or not, it is interesting how They combine here the values of the national Catholicism then prevailing with the figure of the anonymous superhero so in vogue in North American comics., and that in Spain at that time it did not inspire much pleasure. Instead of being set in contemporary times like the latter, the adventure takes place under the stage of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs prior to the end of the Reconquista, and instead of being a vigilante who fights for justice in the abstract, he is a medieval knight (that is, noble and Christian) who fights for the cause of the Church and the kings of "Spain" (it is usually completely ignored that Spain did not exist as a State at that time). Of course, like some superheroes like Batman three years before or Spider-Man two decades later, one of his main motives is the desire to revenge for the death of a close family member, although it should be taken into account that it is a common resource, regardless of the format.

[Meeting…] The Warrior of the Mask
Ali Khan feels true fear towards the warrior due to his overwhelming superiority.

Of course, his decision to remain anonymous is fully justified, especially when some Christian does not seem to have the intention of forgiving you once he discovers your identity, as happened with the Captain Rudolf and with a duke whose execution of his revenge gave rise to the second stage of the warrior's adventures. However, it is still curious that, once her identity became public after her marriage to Ana María, Countess of Torres and great love of the warrior, and the recovery of his title and his lands, He continued with his adventures carrying his mask everywhere. Although at first he did it because "a part of him had died" when he believed his wife and the son he was expecting to be dead, the future Adolfito (a somewhat far-fetched reason, but justified nonetheless), he continued wearing it during the rest of the stage and in the New Adventures (where he is sheathed without any justification after the attack by the samurai pirates). It is striking, especially considering that this mask has its drawbacks.

The definitive national Catholic hero

[Meeting…] The Warrior of the Mask
Incluso dobla barrotes.

[Meeting…] The Warrior of the Mask

Conclusion and recommendations

[Meeting…] The Warrior of the Mask
