Despite the enormous number of television series that Batman has starred in, many people (including myself) tend to consider the 90s version (Batman The Animated Series) as the definitive one.

In general terms, this series knew how to represent Batman in a serious and dark way while adding color and fun to entertain the little ones. Generally the colors and craziness came from the crazy villains, once again the most constant being the Joker and his companion Harley Quinn.

Harley Quinn was a character created for the series and from there he made the leap to comics where he established himself as one of the most popular characters in the Batman universe.

Just as it happened with DeadpoolHarley has seen a surge in popularity during this last decade, to the point that today he is one of the most profitable (and exploited) characters in DC Comics.

THE ARKHAM PSYCHOLOGIST

One of the things that best defines Gotham is the enormous number of crazy people that populate its streets and fill its asylums. Arkham Asylum is where the most dangerous people end up trapped, usually after being captured by Batman.

Faced with such an accumulation of madness in a single building, one wonders, can something be done for them or do they simply lock them up so they don't bother them? And although the answer is obvious, from time to time an attempt by the institution to treat its patients appears.

Harley wasn't a good student, but she passed anyway.

That's where Dr. Harleen Quinzel comes in, who tried to understand and cure the craziest of Gotham's maniacs, the Joker. Despite her good intentions, Harleen was immediately attracted to the “bad boy” until she developed something similar to Stockholm syndrome that ended, as we all know, with her becoming another crazy person, helping the Joker in his misdeeds and blaming Batman for everything.

The relationship between Harley and the Joker is anything but idyllic, because the clown (despite the fact that at some remote moment he has felt affection for her) treats her as just another tool and she, in her willful blindness, accepts any type of treatment on his part, thus becoming the partner-henchman-scapegoat of her beloved Joker, or as she calls him "little cake", "pudding" or "Mr. J".

The fact that Harley was a popular character came more from her crazy and happy personality than from her relationship with the Joker. It is true that this down-and-out psychologist has managed to modify the psychotic clown's opinion on more than one occasion. Those changes have never been lasting or reliable, so in most cases, the relationship only existed when it suited him.

LOOKING FOR A PARTNER IN MISTAKES

After some abuse from her pet, Harley began to become independent in her criminal career, proving that she did not need any authoritarian figure to guide her. However, that was not entirely true and perhaps that is why He ended up becoming Poison Ivy's criminal partner., the crazy scientist turned eco-terrorist and whose body seems to have a higher percentage with the plants she protects so much than with a common human being.

Even though Harley behaves like a naughty girl and gets on Ivy's nerves on many occasions, Ivy always forgives her (usually after Harley begs her) to the point of having affection for her. This unique couple enchanted the public, which almost from the beginning saw in the Ivy-Quinn tandem a couple beyond crime.

Jokes and double meanings about the relationship between Harley and Poison

Although the scriptwriters played with the theme of the relationship between the two, making a huge number of jokes without clarifying or denying anything, for the populace, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy were a couple, something that finally ended up being shown in the comics.

MORE CHANGES

It should not be forgotten that Ivy is also mentally ill, so in many of the fights she had with Harley, our buffoonish psychologist took flight and lived her adventures again, even if it was temporarily.

I am sure that these types of events had a lot to do with the increase in popularity of the character, who already It didn't just belong to Gotham, but you could find it in any corner of the DC universe.

Thus, Harley joined other characters at specific moments, some of them broken toys like herself (like Mary Marvel when she lost her powers) and others totally contrary to what Harley represents (like Power Girl or the Amazons).
