As I already mentioned in the part of the joint item on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the saga Super Mario Bros., it's been a lot since I last played a new title in the franchise. I also made it clear that at no time was it due to a decrease in the objective quality of their games, but rather to purely subjective issues related to the need to try different things and tiredness of the cliché of rescuing the princess in distress. In reality, this abandonment extended to the platform genre as a whole, focusing on others such as adventure, RPG and simulation. However, and for reasons unknown to me, lately my body was asking me to enjoy a new (relatively) but old school platform game again. Among several candidates, the choice was obvious. In fact, that was none other than New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which was released in 2009 on the last generation console. To give reason to this article and differentiate it from a typical analysis, both in the work at hand and in others that I am doing, I am going to stick to the purely playable aspect, although I may make references to other sections tangentially when it fulfills a complementary function to it.

[Playing…] New Super Mario Bros. Wii

For starters, the title itself can be misleading. Anyone who only knows the game by hearsay will come to mind a mere rehash of old formulas from the saga that gives off a penetrating old rufousness due to its limited room for innovation (it must also be taken into account that Nintendo has not been very original with the names of its products lately, as can be seen with terms such as New 3DS, Wii U, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii USuper Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World, etc.). As we will see shortly, this is true to a certain extent, but it also includes a series of very interesting new features that make it more than just an old game that has had a light varnish applied to it.

[Playing…] New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Absolutely everything in this scene (except the state of Mario himself) reminds us of Super Mario World.

As soon as we start playing, we will be hit by a multitude of déjá vus, at least for those who have not missed any of the plumber's deliveries. Thus, we meet again with the classics goal flags that precede the tower, taken directly from Super Mario Bros. As we remember, they give a score directly proportional to the height reached, with the additional incentive of getting an extra life if you manage to jump to the top. Other characteristics that extend to the saga as a whole, such as the extra life for every hundred coins and time limit, they will make an appearance. In the same way, and in the image of Super Mario Bros. 3, we move in the middle of structured maps following the pattern of one castle for every four phases and two per world (both guarded by one of the seven Koopalings), and marked by enemies with which, if you suffer a collision, they will open a bonus screen, as well as Toad huts where we can get power ups (if they are red) and extra lives (if they are green). From time to time (although much less frequently than that one) we will also enter the flying boat, in which this time Bowsy keeps Peach captive. Of Super Mario World, we have the Boo and Yoshi mansion, whose gameplay update based on the double jump draws from Yoshi's Island, from which he also takes the evil wizard Kamek doing their thing. There's even an item from the old arcade Mario Bros., he POW block to knock out several enemies at once. By the way, many of the latter, as well as most power ups (mushrooms, fire flowers, stars of invincibility) and elements of certain phases, come from said games.

The structure of the maps is similar to that of Super Mario Bros. 3

So, with so many elements from the past, it seems that I am contradicting myself when I assert that this is not a simple rehash. The solution to this apparent contradiction lies in two facts. First of all, they are formulas that, on their own, have remained perfectly functional over the years until it acquires a timeless character. Secondly, it has been known skillfully balance all influences, which has allowed us to include different new features that give a twist to an already excellent gameplay. I am going to quote those that I consider most relevant:

  • Modified classic power-ups.
