STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl: The origin of its story

When I decided to play STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl I didn't expect tremendous work of art. First, the visual. 15 years ago there were no good graphics, and the games had that special charm. Ingame, the year is 2012. Your character is a stalker who has just arrived at The Zone, an area that ends in Chernobyl, a place where a nuclear catastrophe occurred years ago that has generated radioactive anomalies here and there of great value. Furthermore, it is said that just in the center, in the most dangerous area, there is an artifact much more special than any other, a meteorite fragment they call “The Genius” that grants wishes. And there you go, knowing the secrets that live there and the people that circulate there, with a system of factions including.

But where does that come from? Let's travel back in time, because the most curious thing of all is that the plot of STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl It is based on a cinematographic work… and a real event.

In 1972, in the USSR, it was published a book written by the Strugatsky brothers called Extraterrestrial Picnic, science fiction. A few years later, a certain Andrei Tarkovsky, film director, decided to talk to them to make a movie of the book, and it was called Stalker: The Zone, in 1979 (it sounds familiar, right?). The plot was blown a little to recreate a much harsher version than the original work, giving a result that is gloomy, full of suspense and with a brutal immersive atmosphere. A writer and a professor travel to a strange place called "The Zone" in the company of a Stalker (that's what they are called). those who know the paths of The Zone), since without it they would be lost, because in La Zona space and time have their own laws and vary randomly. Your goal is to reach a room, which legends say grants wishes.

It had a lot of impact when it came out (especially among the most technical film buffs), but it had even more when, a few years later, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded, and the scenarios that followed were quite similar to the ones in the movie (to the point that Chernobyl survivors began to call themselves stalkers). This did not suit the government of the USSR, which exiled poor Tarkovsky due to rumors about conspiracy plots. How damned life is sometimes.

It seems that the creators of the game wanted to honor both events, making a curious crossover which very accurately imbues both stories.

How is it at a playable level?

STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl has a attribute system that reminds role playing games of the genre, but you can only get your hands on it through objects and artifacts. The basic game is difficult, enemy AIs have a lethal and kilometric aim, even on easy difficulties, and in your weapons precision is very relevant, which forces you not to go crazy in circumstances that in other games you would have thrown everything away.

Entering the Moscow Metro
