When writing these articles, I prefer to talk about games that I personally like a lot, even though they are not considered the best on their system (although sometimes both criteria can be met).

My problem with talking about games that I like, but that at the same time are the best of their system (or generation) comes from the fact that, in reality, I don't know what I can contribute to all the existing information about them, because of course, there are thousands of articles, videos and wikis dedicated to that type of games, so sometimes I find it redundant to say again what is already taken for granted.

One of those games is Super Mario World (also known as Super Mario Bros 4 in Japan), the first Super Nintendo game and one of the most popular games of Nintendo's mascot.

Super Mario World took (almost) everything good from Super Mario Bros. and he expanded it, at the same time that he added some playable novelties (such as Yoshi, the Switches or the rotating jump) and increased the number of secrets so that the most curious players could dedicate an enormous number of hours to it (I remember the joy I had when discovering the special world that was in the center of the star world). Being the first Super Nintendo game, perhaps it is not visually surprising (even Super Mario All Stars looks much better), but it allowed the developers to use some of the console's typical tricks in its visual section (rotations, zooms, transparencies...).

Super Mario World, the classic of SNES classics

Super Mario World It's a fun game, and although it was the first "easy" Mario (compared to previous games), it could be a challenge for veteran players as long as they wanted to find all the secrets and complete the special world.

To sum it up in some way, if you ever don't know what to play, Super Mario World It is always an answer that gives good results. No excuses are needed to play this great game, but in the case of veteran players who have enjoyed it for several decades and who know its secrets by heart, I understand that they prefer to search the depths of the catalogs of their favorite consoles, to find some games that, without being as good as this one, can provide something new that justifies spending some time on them.

Recently and almost by chance I discovered that there is a hack to play Super Mario Bros. (from NES) two simultaneous players (something that Nintendo deprived us of doing until the saga NEW Super Mario Bros). My surprise was even greater when I discovered that There was a similar hack for Super Mario World, generally known as Super Mario World CO-OP Hack.

Taking advantage of the fact that I had met a friend to play some games, I decided to try that hack, which is what motivated me to write this article.

Two simultaneous players!

Super Mario Bros Co-Op Hack It doesn't change the levels of the game (like the hundreds of hacks of this game do) but adding a second player is enough of a novelty to make the game very different from what it usually is.

In this case, both players knew the original game quite well, so we could get into it without worries.

The first game begins and I realize that on the map it is the first player who decides where to go, however, during the first level I discover that the scroll (the camera) does not have favoritism, as usually happens in some games where the rhythm is set by player 1. If Luigi is on the right edge and Mario on the left, when the plumber in green moves he will “drag” his brother, and the same thing happens in reverse.

Both characters on the map

This can mean that if a character gets trapped between the left corner and any solid element (such as a pipe) they will die if the other player continues advancing. Curiously, this does not happen exactly like this with vertical scrolling, since we can climb a vine, leaving the other player below, without losing any life, despite being outside the television screen (although this has its limitations).

Another case of involuntary death, much more difficult to prevent and avoid, is “the turtle hit” and I am not referring to kicking a turtle shell and when it bounces off something it hits us and kills us (which continues to happen) but to the fact that if one of the two characters is holding a turtle shell can kill his partner if he touches him. In other words, the turtle shell is still considered an enemy to the player who is not holding it. This curious situation caused me to think that the game was broken when I saw strange deaths, such as when both players jumped onto a platform, one of them died "for no reason." A little later I discovered that it was the shell that was killing my partner and not that the game was broken.

Since it wouldn't be fun if one player died in the first seconds, leaving the other completely alone to complete the level, the idea of bubbles has been included from the saga New Super Mario Bros., so that a few seconds after a character dies, they will appear in a bubble that, when touched by the other player, will enable them to continue playing (as long as they have enough lives).

If a player dies, they will return in a bubble

As I progressed through the game I discovered some graphical glitches., such as flickering, disappearance or deformation of the sprites when doing some things (swimming, shooting the fire flower, using the pink triangles to walk along walls...), or that sometimes Luigi did strange things (at a graphic level) such as walking with his arms forward (as if he were grabbing something) or that when climbing a plant or moving through the grates of the first castle he did not use his hands, but rather remained almost static, although that It became an anecdote when I discovered that Luigi couldn't punch the grates, which meant he couldn't turn through the grates between both sides, or kill turtles that passed by on the other side.

Graphic Bug Festival

This was only the beginning of what I could call "how it sucks to be Luigi", since the game involuntarily seems to have a certain hatred towards the plumber in green, causing him strange deaths at any time or marginalizing him in specific things, as I will explain below.

In some levels in which the scroll moves forward to force you to advance, Luigi gets trapped just before starting the game, losing a life without remedy (en algunos casos, esto también le puede pasar a Mario).
