[Meeting…] Hug the Troglodyte

He comics and prehistory As a discipline they have more in common than meets the eye. At least that said Gonzalo Ruíz Zapatero, professor of Prehistory at the Complutense University of Madrid and a great fan of comics. In his opinion, both share the need to capture their concepts graphically, but the traditional distance between them has often meant that the remote past is not represented too faithfully in the comic.

In Spain, some of these cases proliferated between the 50s and 60s of the 20th century. On the one hand there are works such as Purk, The Stone Man (brothers. Gago, 1950) which, according to its classification, would fall into the “total fiction comic with realistic graphics”, and, on the other hand, troglodyte (Schmidt, 1957) Altamiro de la Cueva (Bernet, 1965), or Hug the Troglodyte (Grosset, 1965), cataloged within the “fantastic caricature”. Today I have the pleasure of introducing this last character.

“Homo burrus” to the core

Hug the Troglodyte is presented by its author, Jordi Groset (aka Grosset), as the living stereotype of the caveman of popular culture, quite far from archaeological data. His clothes are coarse as hell, reduced to a garment little larger than a pair of underwear, made of roughly made feline skin, and held on one of the shoulders and full of indentations and protrusions like “scissors”. Is short and thick, his head is completely covered with hair except for his round nose that sticks out (in the first comics the ears), and his only weapon is a big blackjack that you will not hesitate to use when the occasion arises. To highlight this primitivism, his way of speaking includes guttural sounds like the one that gives him his name (he will frequently start a sentence with the “Hug!”) or words written incorrectly (the “c” will be replaced by the “k” on several occasions).

Our particular caveman is supposed to be an anatomically modern human, that is, a Homo sapiens. In fact, allusions to the main features of this species in particular and to the genus Homo in general are quite frequent, such as the recurrent expression of “use cranial capacity” for any purpose that requires ingenuity, or to devise all kinds of gadgets to put it into practice. But when it comes down to it, His intelligence and skills leave much to be desired.. His strategies when searching for food end in failure (even though some of them are not poorly thought out at all), and he shows a notorious inability to perform tasks that a true Paleolithic man would consider simple, such as lighting a fire, a task for which he must spend several “quaternary hours.” His friend Pitakoras reproaches him for not using his intellect enough and letting himself be carried away by brute force, and Pikaso blames him for his lack of artistic talent. Even he will call himself “Homus burrus”, “unfortunate”, etc. at the end of his catastrophic adventures.

What a quaternary life!

Hug vive en la Prehistoria, y no está nada satisfecho con ello. Es más, por su comportamiento parece un hombre del siglo XX que ha viajado accidentalmente al pasado y no puede regresar a su época. Vive en una cueva y, recostado sobre la roca desnuda, siempre se está quejando del aburrimiento y la falta de comodidades de la Edad de Piedra, y cuando encuentra algún obstáculo en el camino lamentará que todavía no se haya inventado lo que quiera que le permitiera solucionar su problema (Pitakoras ya diagnosticó su problema en una ocasión, calificándolo como “futurismo”).

Su gran preocupación es la “manduca” (comida). De hecho, siempre parece estar hambriento, pero debido a su falta de talento como cazador, deberá conformarse con semillas, nabos, huevos o gusanos (los pobres saldrán huyendo cuando Hug diga tener hambre). Pero eso no basta, pues él necesita proteínas en grandes cantidades. Ahí entra en juego otro de los grandes anacronismos, pues algunas de las piezas que intentará cazar serán grandes “pepe-saurios” (dinosaurios inventados tanto en el nombre como en la forma) que o bien se le comerán a él o le pisotearán. Buscar empleo en los periódicos pétreos será otra forma de intentar sobrellevar una vida tan «achuchá».  En estas aventuras, pasado y presente se entrecruzan sin ningún tipo de rigor histórico, constituyendo un mero escenario en el que tienen lugar las desgracias de nuestro personaje.

Conclusion and recommendations

Hug es un troglodita bastante torpe y simple que siempre está hambriento y nunca consigue lo que se propone. En ese sentido, podría decirse que no difiere mucho de otros personajes de la escuela Bruguera, salvo por el hecho de que éste vive en la Edad de Piedra. A pesar de todo, sus inquietudes y predicciones lo convierten en un cavernícola adelantado a su tiempo.

El personaje de Grosset vio la luz en la revista Tío Vivo en 1965. Su popularidad fue en aumento y llegó a convertirse en uno de los personajes más populares de la revista, pasando a ocupar algunas portadas.  Perduró hasta la revista Mortadelo Extra de finales de los 80 y primera mitad de los 90, ya con un grafismo más redondeado que en sus antiguas historietas. A pesar de todo, hoy en día es raro verlo. Sus dos recopilatorios, Gansadas Prehistóricas (Olé #32, 1971) y Peripecias Cuaternarias (Olé #61, 1972), están descatalogados. Lo mismo ocurre con el de Clásicos del Humor de RBA (#31, 2009), a pesar de ser mucho más reciente. Quizás con un poco de suerte encontréis alguno de estos en alguna tienda de libros antiguos o en rastrillos.
