Kirby games have always been simple, enjoyable and quite popular, although it is also true that this character has been so constant that some of his games have been forgotten.

The reason may have to do with the fact that they are games that we could call experimental, since they completely distance themselves from the genre that saw the birth of this character, such as Kirby's Tilt n' Tumble on Game Boy Color (in which we controlled Kirby by tilting the console), Kirby Dream Course on the Super Nintendo (which is kind of like a mini-golf game using Kirby as a ball) and Kirby Air Ride  for Gamecube (which belongs to the racing genre).

Kirby Air Ride It was going to be released for Nintendo 64, but it was finally delayed and appeared for Gamecube, taking advantage of the greater power of the new console to improve technically and the extra time to add more content.

As strange as it may seem, I would like to clarify that this game, despite having certain similarities, It is not a clone of Mario Kart, neither in the good, nor in the bad, but opt for a totally different control and playing style.

The first thing we see in this title is that it is divided into 3 completely independent game types (Air Ride, Top Ride and City Trial), so I will comment on each of them separately.

AIR RIDE

It could be considered the main mode, since it is exactly what has been shown in trailers since the game was announced for N64. It is the standard racing mode, we see our character from behind and we have to compete to reach the finish line first.

When choosing a character we will realize that in reality what we choose is a vehicle for our Kirby from among the following:

Warp Star: The typical yellow star from the Kirby saga. It is the standard ship and is balanced in all aspects.

Compact Star: Similar to the Warp Star, but somewhat slower and more manageable.

Bulk Star: It is the largest and most brutal ship. To move it you have to charge its turbo indicator with the A button. It will accelerate little by little and if you manage to keep it charged, it will be unstoppable and will pass over anyone.

Rocket Star: Its main advantage is that if we press A, it will charge a turbo that will send us flying at full speed. You have to know when to stop to use the turbo again, since its general speed is not a big deal.

Winged Star: This ship is not very fast on land, but when you glide it is very fast and manageable.

Shadow Star: It is fast and damaging, designed for players who seek physical contact with their rivals.

Slick Star: It has practically no grip and slides easily. You have to have a lot of patience to master it and get the most out of it.

Formula Star: The longer it is on the ground, the faster it becomes.

Turbo Star: The typical fast and uncontrollable vehicle for people with a lot of patience.

Wheelie Bike: It is difficult to control, but if you manage it you will get a lot of use out of its speed.

Wheelie Scooter: Similar to Weelie Bike, but with the possibility of making much faster turns (if you get lost you will end up going in the opposite direction).

Rex Wheelie: The biggest, most powerful and fastest motorcycle. It takes some patience to learn to control it.

Jet Star: On the ground it is not very fast, but when you plan it accelerates more and more.

Wagon Star: This ship is big, heavy and has no turbo, but it is very solid and strong.

Swerve Star: This ship is controlled in a somewhat special way, since it will move at its maximum speed and when we press the button it will stop dead. So you have to be very good at braking and turning as quickly as possible to take advantage of it.

If you have unlocked them, instead of choosing one of these ships we can change Kirby for Dedede (riding a motorcycle) or Meta Knight (flying with his wings). Once the vehicle has been chosen, we will have to choose the stage and start the race.

The main difference of this game with other racing games is that the control has been simplified so that Only use a single button for all actions. So our ship will accelerate automatically and when we press A, our character will brake and at the same time charge energy to shoot off as soon as we release the button. This type of control is quite curious and it wouldn't be bad if it weren't for the fact that when attacking the A button is also used exclusively, this means that if we carry a bomb and we come across a corner and brake, we will also throw the bomb (which will hit us and make us lose time) or if we have loaded a special attack to hit the runner in front and for any reason we have to brake, we will spend it. Likewise, when we go over switches (that can open and close paths) or turbos that we want to activate, the same button is used and well... you can imagine the number of situations that can occur under the right conditions.

[Playing…] Kirby Air Ride
As usual, each enemy will grant Kirby a special ability

They could have decided to use the A button for everything derived from braking and turbo, and the B button for the attacks, but they preferred to leave everything in one button, and honestly, That significantly ruins the way you play.. If you play with Meta Knight or Dedede things get better, since these characters will automatically use their sword and hammer when attacking and cannot obtain other powers, so you avoid hurting yourself if you stop suddenly.

The total lack of championships (only single races can be played) and its beautiful, but few circuits (there are only 9) make this game mode la sensación de estar incompleto.

TOP RIDE
