Anima FluxIt is presented as a new proposal in the genre of cooperative metroidvanias. Developed by the independent studio of the same name (Anima Flux), this title seeks to combine traditional elements of the genre with some interesting innovations. Set in a dystopian future, the game promises an experience that mixes exploration, combat and narrative in a package designedfor both solo and cooperative play. As someone familiar with the genre, I set out to explore what Anima Flux has to offer, curious to see if it manages to stand out in a market increasingly saturated with independent proposals.
Released on October 7, 2024, Anima Flux is presented as a cooperative metroidvania that promises a unique experience. After spending several hours exploring its intricate levels and unraveling itsdystopian narrative, I can say that this game has a lot to offer, both for fans of the genre and for those looking for a fresh and challenging cooperative experience.
A Dystopian World Comes to Life
The first thing that captivated me about Anima Flux was its setting. The game immerses us in a dark future where humanity is on the brink of extinction. The only remaining human city lies in a space ark, a last bastion of hope in a hostile universe. This premise, while not entirely original, is presented in such a vivid and detailed manner that it is impossible not to feel immediately immersed in its world.
The developers have done an exceptional job in creating an environment that exudes authenticity. Every corner of the ark city tells a story: the worn metal walls, the exposed wires, the flickering lights, all contribute to a feeling of decay and despair. It is a future that feels tangible, a place where advanced technology coexists with misery and hopelessness.
The artistic direction deserves a special mention. The settings are designed in a style that evokes the science fiction classics of the 80s and 90s, but with a modern touch that makes them feel fresh and unique. The colors are vibrant when they need to be, creating a striking contrast to the more somber tones that dominate much of the game. This color palette is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also serves to guide you through the intricate levels.
But what really brings this world to life are the details. TheNPCsthat we find, although they are not numerous, are well characterized and offer dialogues that enrich the narrative. Text records scattered around the world add layers of depth to the story, slowly revealing the events that brought humanity to its current situation. Every piece of information feels valuable, motivating you to explore every corner for more clues about this fascinating universe.
A Narrative that Engages
The plot of Anima Flux is one of its strong points. It puts us in the role of two genetically enhanced soldiers, special agents of a dictatorial theocratic regime. Our mission:Save the last human city from a mutant invasion. But, as you might expect in a good science fiction story, nothing is as simple as it seems.
As we progress through the story, we find ourselves questioning not only our mission, but also our very existence. The game addresses complex themes such as identity, free will, and the cost of survival. How far are we willing to go to save humanity? And what does it really mean to be human in a world where technology can transfer our “animas” from one body to another?
The narrative unfolds through a combination of in-game dialogue, cutscenes, and the aforementioned text logs. The cutscenes, in particular, are very good. They are animated in a style reminiscent of classic sci-fi anime series, adding a touch of nostalgia that perfectly complements the game's overall aesthetic. In fact, the first thing it reminded me of isAeon Flux, an old classic animation that was on MTV, do you remember it? I don't think the name of this game and its aesthetic resemblance to that series are a coincidence.
However, I must mention that the story, while intriguing, can feel a little overwhelming at times. There are many world-specific concepts and terms that are introduced quickly, and at times I found myself wishing there was a glossary or an easier way to review the information I had already discovered.
Gameplay: A Balance between Cooperation and Challenge
The heart of Anima Flux and any metroidvania in general lies in itsgameplay, and this is where the game stands out a lot. As a cooperative metroidvania, it offers a unique experience that combines the non-linear exploration characteristic of the genre withGame mechanics designed for two players.
The two playable characters, a man specialized in close combat and a woman expert in ranged combat, offer complementary play styles. This duality is fundamental to the gaming experience, whether you are playing alone or with a friend.
In single mode, you canswitch between the two characters at will, which adds an extra layer of strategy to exploration and combat. I found it particularly satisfying to switch between characters to solve puzzles or face different types of enemies. However, I must admit that there were times when the AI of the character I wasn't controlling would behave erratically, occasionally leading to frustrating situations.
Helocal cooperative modeis where Anima Flux really shines. Playing with a friend on the same keyboard (or with controllers, if you prefer) adds a whole new dimension to the experience. The coordination required to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies feels rewarding, and the moments of shared triumph are truly memorable.
The combat system is robust and satisfying. Each character has a unique set of skills that can be upgraded throughout the game. The male character, with his focus on hand-to-hand combat, requires a more tactical and risky approach. On the other hand, the female character, with her bow, allows for a more calculated and distanced style of play.

An interesting mechanic is the «anger mode«, which allows characters to perform more powerful attacks for a short period of time. This ability adds an element of resource management to combat, as you must decide when is the optimal time to activate it.
The character progression feels well balanced. As you progress through the game, you unlock new abilities and upgrades that not only make your characters more powerful, but also open up new ways to interact with the environment and solve puzzles. This "metroidvania" aspect is well implemented, motivating you to return to previously inaccessible areas to discover secrets and collectibles.
talking aboutcollectibles, Anima Flux offers a good variety. From text logs that expand the story to biomaterial containers that serve as in-game currency, there's always something to search for. However, I should mention that the lack of a system for marking collectibles on the map can be frustrating for completionists.
The level design deserves a special mention. The developers have created an interconnected world that invites exploration. Each area feels unique, with its own challenges and secrets. The verticality of the levels adds an extra dimension to exploration, and discovering new shortcuts and connections between areas is always satisfying.

A Visual Feast

Technical Challenges and Areas for Improvement
