Not long ago, it went on sale. TMNT Cowabunga Collection for Nintendo Switch, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PlayStation 4 and 5. Well-known games such as arcades appear in this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles compilation Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and its sequel Turtles In Time, but they have also taken the trouble to add minor games, like those that appeared for the veteran Game Boy during the 90s.

Gameboy had three games starring the Ninja Turtles, the first was TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan released between 1990 and 1991, its sequel TMNT Back from the Sewers appeared a year later and finally, the last part TMNT 3 Radical Rescue appeared in 1993.

The first two games of the trilogy TMNT Game Boy games were pretty simple, but its third part chose to do something totally different and try the formula that popularized Metroid, so instead of eliminating foot soldiers in a kind of beat'em up, we will do it walking through a labyrinth of scenarios where we have to get items and improvements for our characters.

The story of this game is typical of the Ninja Turtles games. Shredder has kidnapped April, which causes Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Splinter to go to the fortress of their archenemy to rescue her, so that When Michelangelo returns home from buying pizzas, he finds that everyone has disappeared and goes out in search of them..

At first glance, the graphics of this game seem uglier than the previous ones, mainly because the turtle sprite is smaller and less funny, but I like it a lot because Reminds me of the original Mirage Comics turtles.

Enemies are repetitive and unmemorable. Most of them are Foot soldiers (sometimes walking, sometimes flying with a jetpack or armed with pickaxes), different types of robots, bubbles, bats, laser beams and small fire-breathing geysers, nothing memorable. Although an attempt has been made to have some variety Depending on the part of the game where we are (in the mine part, we will see foot soldiers in a minecart or armed with pickaxes, in the more futuristic part we will see more robots...), the truth is that some are constantly repeated (like the bats) and others are not too inspired (the bubbles), which makes me miss enemies that did appear in previous games, such as the Mousers.

The Ninja Turtles in a Metroid-style game

Something similar happens with the final bosses., none of them (except Shredder) are memorable, since They are all third-rate characters in the world of the Ninja Turtles, (I suppose to avoid repeating characters that already appeared in the previous ones). In total we have 5 bosses: Scratch, a cat dressed as a prisoner (which curiously is one of the most difficult toys to get from the 90s Ninja Turtles), the Dirtbag mole, a Triceraton, the Scale Tail snake and, finally, Shredder. They all have large, recognizable sprites (if you know who the characters are, of course), except Shredder, who has a design closer to the original comics or Cyber-Shredder of TMNT Tournament Fighters, than the one in the television series.

As far as the scenarios are concerned, we find that the entire game is a kind of maze separated into sections, which try to differentiate themselves with relative success. That means there will be four different visual styles, which are quite worked, despite the fact that two of them are very similar.
