Hatchet(2006) is a direct and unpretentious slasher that revives the spirit of the films of the eighties. A group of friends decide to take a night tour of the New Orleans swamps to see supposed ghosts. What starts as a fun adventure turns into a nightmare when they encounter Victor Crowley, a man deformed by a childhood accident who lives hidden in the bayou and kills anyone who enters his territory. The film does not seek to innovate: it only wants to entertain with blood, black humor and an unforgettable villain.
A Swamp Tour That Goes Wrong
The story begins with a group of university students and tourists who book a tour of the Louisiana swamps. The guide, a local and somewhat cynical guy, warns them not to stray from the marked routes. Nobody pays attention to him. They are more interested in drinking, flirting and taking photos to show off online. Among them are a shy boy looking to impress a girl, a couple who constantly argue, a party boy and a skeptical tourist. They all seem like characters straight out of any classic slasher, but that's precisely what the film celebrates.
The group ignores the danger signs and heads into a forbidden area of the bayou. The fog thickens, the trees close in and the sound of insects becomes deafening. They soon find remains of an old abandoned camp and begin to feel that someone is watching them. The guide tries to get them out of there, but it is too late. Victor Crowley appears for the first time, a tall, deformed figure with a rusty axe. His face, covered in scars and deformities, is an image that remains engraved. The first death comes quickly and brutally, and from there the film doesn't stop.
The action takes place almost in real time. The survivors run through the swamp, hide among the trees and try to improvise weapons with what they find. Every chase sequence is tense and bloody. Victor is not a silent and elegant killer: he is clumsy, furious and extremely strong. Their attacks are direct, brutal and filmed with quick cuts that hide nothing. The film doesn't skimp on practical gore: severed limbs, crushed heads and mangled bodies. At the same time, black humor appears in the dialogues of the characters, who continue joking even while fleeing for their lives.
The Killer and the Spirit of the Slasher
Victor Crowley is the heart of the film. He is not just a werewolf or a ghost: he is a human being deformed by a tragic accident in his childhood, abandoned by society and consumed by rage. His story is told inflashbacksshorts that explain why it kills everyone who enters its territory. Kane Hodder, the legendary actor who played Jason Voorhees, plays Victor with an imposing physical presence. Its clumsy movements and constant growl make it scarier than any sophisticated monster.
The film is a declared tribute to theslashersof the eighties. Adam Green, the director, grew up watching those films and wanted to make one that respected their rules: a group of flawed characters, a memorable villain, creative deaths and an ending that leaves the door open for more. There are no big twists or deep messages. Just bloody fun and a pace that doesn't let up. The Louisiana swamp becomes another character, with its thick fog, stagnant water and vegetation that seems to swallow the characters.
In my opinion,HatchetIt is one of those films that does not pretend to be more than a fun and bloody slasher, and in that it more than delivers. It is not surprising because of its originality, but it is surprising because of the amount of gore and the charisma of the villain. If you're looking for a night of uncomplicated horror, with creative kills and a killer who earns your respect, this movie delivers exactly what it promises.
