[Fantastic worlds] The Prophet's rose: wars of gods in a world like One Thousand and One Nights

Arabian Nights, a compilation of traditional tales from the medieval Islamic world united under the common thread of the peculiar relationship between the jilted monarch Shahriar and his cunning concubine Scheherazade, left its mark on the Western imagination. Although Disney reinforced it enormously with the movieAladdin(1992),The Prophet's Rose(1988)It already includes this influence within medieval fantasy literature four years before its release.

The cosmogony ofThe Prophet's RoseIt has the shape of a gem with twenty faces that revolves around Sul as a central entity, delimited by three vertices.Each facet is embodied by a god (therefore, twenty in total) and, the vertices, by philosophies (twelve).. Therefore, each divinity is the possessor of three of those philosophies that, together, make themgods of Evil (five), Good (another five) and neutral (ten).

The fate of the world depends on the balance of the different faces of the Gem. One that, naturally (because, otherwise, there would be no history), was altered as the deities began to fight among themselves, each one fighting for their Truth. The point of no return would arrive when, one fateful day,the goddess Evren and the god Zhakrin perishedbefore the horrified eyes of the rest of the gods because, apparently, they were left without the prayers necessary for their sustenance.

Akhran the Wanderer, as wandering as the desert nomads who worshiped him,I thought I knew who was behind it: Quar, the god of Reality, Greed and Mercy.. Although the rest of the gods considered him a peacemaker (he was known as Quar the Just), Akhran accused him ofsow discordbetween them in a subtle way, in addition to being theresponsible for the disappearance of the Immortalsof the rest of the gods (those who are in the intermediate ranking between divinities and humanity).

Thus, Akhran decided that his people must remain united in the face of the threat of Quar. Unfortunately, this is made up of tribes that professed a furious enmity. That is why he entrusted the djinn of their respective sheikhs with a seemingly impossible task:to marry Khardan, son of Majid, of the tribe of the Akars, to Zhora, daughter of Jaffar, chief of the Hranas. As if that were not enough, the union cannot be brokenuntil the cactus known as the Prophet's rose blooms.

The difficulty was that both tribes had been at war for no less than five hundred years. As if that were not enough,Zohra was an untamed womanthat she used to ride a horse like any man would, and that she seemed determined that no one would lay a hand on her, something that very soonwould clash (in the most violent way) with Khardan's haughty confidence.

Of course, this premise would give another exponent more thanromanticasycheap styleenemies to lovershow fashionable it is today. Luckily, this book is not from 2025, but from 1988, long before the boom of this subgenre. Furthermore, it is written by none other thanMargaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, the legendary literary duo famous for the first trilogy of thedragonlanceand many others in the series.

The construction of the worldThe Prophet's RoseIt has enough development to be convincing. Although the initial description of the Gem of Sul, with its twenty gods with their three philosophies respectively, may seem overwhelming, in realityThere will be very few who have a real role. Pero, al mismo tiempo, el hecho de saber que están ahíproporciona esa sensación de estar ante un universo complejo.

Además, quecada dios tenga su propia jerarquía de Inmortales y el modo de relacionarse con su pueblome parece de lo más original y aporta una capa adicional de profundad. Por ejemplo, Akhran ha confiado los suyos, los djinn (los típicos genios de la lámpara) la realización de las necesidades y caprichos de los humanos a los que sirven. Los de Promenthas, por el contrario, siguen la jerarquía de querubines, ángeles y arcángeles al estilo del cristianismo y el resto de religiones abrahámicas.

Los personaje son complejos y multifacéticos, a pesar de lo planos y estereotipados que puedan parecer en un principio, y su desarrollo a lo largo de sus aventuras es más que notable. Tendrán que poner a prueba lo que creen, ya sea su cosmovisión o el concepto que tenían del otro, con elchoque entre religiones y culturas como telón de fondo. Mención especial merece eltratamiento de la magia en esta obra: un asunto de mujeres,a menudo curativo, devaluado en una sociedad patriarcal y guerrera.

Otro punto a destacar es la cuestión del Bien y del Mal. Aunque la obra parte de esa premisa clásica,en la práctica termina siendo menos maniquea. Incluso los seguidores de la más brutal y abyecta de las religiones demuestran valores positivos como la lealtad y el honor para con los suyos y su dios. Por su parte, Quar, el dios-villano que busca convertirse en la única y verdadera divinidad, no cree traer más que el bien a la humanidad y al mundo.

Por lo que respecta a su estilo de escritura, esta esla obra de la mayor calidad literaria que he leído en mucho tiempo dentro del género. Margaret Weis y Tracy Hickman tienen la virtud de no temer a las frases largas, elaboradas y con varias subordinadas si es necesario, sin comprometer su legibilidad. Su rica prosa es camaleónica, adaptándose a los momentos solemnes, cómicos, dramáticos o sensuales (que no explícitos).

The Prophet's Rosees, en efecto,una trilogía. Está compuesta porLa voluntad del dios errante,El paladín de la nocheandEl profeta de Akhran. A su vez, cada uno de ellos se divide en partes de extensión variable llamadas libros, ya sean de alguna divinidad concreta o de los Inmortales (en estos últimos, el foco pasa de los personajes humanos a los djinn), cuyos capítulos suelen ser relativamente breves.

Toda la obra está escrita entercera persona en tiempo pasado, a excepción del prólogo. Éste sigue la rarísimasegunda persona en presente, lo que hará que nos sintamos directamente interpelados, como si un mercader errante nos contase una historia como al inicio delAladdinde Disney o jugásemos una partida de rol de tablero (recodemos que de ahí viene buena parte de la inspiración de los autores en sus novelas de ladragonlance).

The Prophet's Rosees una obra muy particular. Sin miedo a las frases largas y ricas en metáforas y con un registro que va de lo oscuro a lo bufonesco, pasando por lo solmene y lo sensual, nos sumerge en un mundo de fantasía a imagen del Oriente Medio medieval donde las batallas en la tierra son la prolongación de las pugnas en el cielo. Aunque el punto de partida es el matrimonio de sus protagonistas, el romance será poco relevante, siendo en esencia una obra de aventuras con, eso sí, relaciones humanas profundas.

No puedo poner apenas pegas a estos libros, aunque seguramente a algunos lectores actuales se les atragante su estilo de escritura (precisamente el que me parece más estimulante) o su ritmo relativamente lento para esta era de consumo instantaneo, de la que ni la literatura se salva. Lo único que veo criticable es que el primer volumen no cuente con unglosario para las abundantes palabras en árabe que salpican la obra en todo momento. Por suerte, eso es corregido desde el segundo.

La rosa del profetafue publicado en español encuatro formatos, tres de ellos por Timun Mas. El primero fue en 1990, de tapa dura. Le siguió un extraño formato de dos libros por cada volumen (es decir, seis en total) , también de tapa dura, publicado en 1997. Dos años después apareció por fin la edición de bolsillo, con una reediciones en 2001 y 2003. La más reciente es la publicada en cartoné por Planeta DeAgostini en 2006. Vamos, quehabrá que tirar del mercado de segunda mano.
