There are games that hit you with hyper-realistic graphics. Others, with an epic soundtrack. ButDeep Sleep: Labyrinth of the Forsakenprefers a different approach: sneaking into your mind like a whisper in the darkness, using pixels that breathe anguish and a narrative that explores grief through dream worlds. Developed byScriptwelder(creator of the sagaDeep Sleep) and published by Armor Games Studios, this title is not just another point-and-click adventure: it is a bold experiment that fuses the best of classic psychological horror with modern RPG mechanics and roguelike elements. After more than 20 hours immersed in its twisted corridors, I can say with certainty that it is an experience that will haunt you long after you turn off the screen.

A Premise That Captivates from the First Minute

The story followsAmy, a village veterinarian who discovers that her brotherThomas, obsessed with lucid dreaming and alternate worlds, might not be dead as he thought. After finding her diaries, Amy uses an electrode cap to immerse herself in dreams that are labyrinths of pain and mystery. What's great is how the game avoids repetition and the obvious as it reveals information: the plot is revealed through hidden documents, dialogues with ambiguous NPCs, and scenarios that tell stories on their own. From an abandoned train station to a cursed casino where no one wins, each setting is a chapter in Amy's quest.

Amy's brother Thomas is no ordinary MacGuffin: his recordings and notes reveal a mind fractured by obsession, and the decisions you make (like choosing between trusting a stranger or running away) affect the ending. There are multiple outcomes, from one hopeful to another that suggests Amy was trapped forever in the maze. Which one will you get?

Gameplay: Puzzles that Defy Logic (Oneiric)

The core of the game is exploration and puzzles in the classic point-and-click style: you examine objects, combine items and solve puzzles. But nothing here is conventional:

  • Randomization: The items and configuration of the rooms change in each game. In one game, you find a lever in the first room; in another, just a human bone that you will use as a weapon. This adds replayability, but also frustration when randomization doesn't cooperate.
  • Imagination System: Amy can recreate items she has already used by spending "Focus Points". Did your iron bar break? Imagine it again. It's a brilliant mechanic that turns resource management into an act of creativity.
  • Turn-based combat: Far from the shootouts of Resident Evil, here the encounters are tactical. You choose weapons (from screwdrivers to chainsaws), each with limited durability, and must calculate whether to attack, flee, or use special abilities. The bosses, like theTrio Mermaidsor thePuppet Master, require strategy: they heal allies, summon minions and penalize errors with instant death.

But the combat is not perfect. There have been reports of enemies regenerating too quickly or the escape system failing, leading to unfair death loops. In my experience, I played after the game got its release patch, and I understand it improved this, so I had no issues.

Art and Sound: Pixel Art that Mesmerizes

Visually, the game is ahomage to PS1 style horrorwith a detailed pixel aesthetic that emulates Silent Hill or Resident Evil in isometric 2D. The dark color palette, dim lighting, and fluid animations create an oppressive atmosphere. Scenes such as a forest with giant spiders whose legs crawl behind the screen, or a casino where NPCs disappear into the fog stand out.

The soundtrack ofChristopher Carloneis another high point: ambient themes with somber pianos and combat-intensifying synths. The sound of footsteps on carpets, the creaking of doors and the whispers of the "Shadow People" are best heard with headphones.

Problems: The Other Side of the Nightmare

Despite its successes, the game has some shadows:

  • Excessive grind: To improve skills in the progression tree, you must repeat zones and farm "Echoes". This breaks the pacing in the final acts, where bosses require specific equipment.
  • Technical bugs: On Switch, FPS drops are reported in areas such as Sleepy City. Unfortunately I can't confirm this, since this review is based on its PC version, and I had no problems on myROG Ally X.
  • Steep difficulty curve: Bosses like the Sirens (who heal allies every turn) or the Puppet Master (who summons dummies) can be insurmountable walls if you don't use a guide.

Conclusion: Is It Worth Entering the Labyrinth?

Yes, yes...

  • You are a fan of sagas like Silent Hill or point-and-clicks like Broken Sword.
  • You don't mind randomization or dying to learn.
  • You're looking for a story with emotional weight and memorable characters.

No, yes...

Deep Sleep: Labyrinth of the Forsakenestá disponible en PC y Nintendo Switch.

🥳 The best
Su estética pixel art. Le va de maravilla.
Su rejugabilidad, incluyendo aleatorización y múltiples finales.
El "sistema de imaginación".
😕 To improve
Su curva de dificultad. Algunos jefes pueden sentirse demasiado injutos.
El grindeo, que en los actos finales se vuelve bastante molesto y se siente como relleno innecesario.
8.5
Excellent!
