Hello horror and puzzle lovers! Today I want to share my experience with youScholar's Mate, a game that has kept me entertained and with my heart racing. Prepare to immerse yourself in an intriguing story and gameplay that will test both your bravery and your gray matter.
Imagine waking up in a dark room, with blood on the walls and lit candles, without knowing how you got there. Thus begins the odyssey of Judith, the protagonist of Scholar's Mate, who finds herself trapped inan old abandoned psychiatric hospital. Poor Judith has been drugged and taken against her will to this spooky place, and now she must find a way to escape.
But be careful! Judith is not alone in this place.A monstrous armed man stalks the hallways, ready to kill her if he finds her. Does it sound scary? Well believe me, it is. The tension you feel exploring the hospital knowing that at any moment you could run into this gigantic enemy is simply overwhelming.
The story of Scholar's Mate is revealed little by little as we progress through the game. Although the abandoned mental hospital theme may seem a bit trite, I must admit that it works perfectly in the context of this game.escape room. Additionally, the bits of dialogue are well written and the actress who plays Judith does a good job bringing her character to life.
Now, how do you play Scholar's Mate? The gameplay takes place in first person, which completely immerses us in the experience. At first, it reminded me a little of the most recent games ofresident Evil, since we can explore the spaces around us, collect objects and examine elements. But I soon discovered that Scholar's Mate has its own unique personality.
One of the first things we get is a flashlight, and believe me, it's essential. The hospital is plunged into darkness, and without it, we would be practically blind. However, using it has its risks, since it increases the chances of being discovered by our pursuer. It's a constant game of risk and reward that keeps your adrenaline pumping.

Scholar's Mate's gameplay relies heavily on puzzle solving and stealth. We will have to carefully explore every corner of the hospital, looking for clues and objects that will help us solve the enigmas that stand in our way to freedom. Some of these puzzles are really complex and challenging, which adds an extra layer of satisfaction when we finally manage to solve them.
But don't trust yourself, because while we try to decipher these riddles, danger constantly lurks. The monstrous pursuer tirelessly patrols the hospital corridors, andIf he catches us, it's game over. This "cat and mouse" mechanic reminded me a lot of games likeHaunting Ground, where we also had to solve puzzles while being chased, or the mythicalClock Tower.

The difficulty of the game is considerable, even at the lowest level. It requires patience, stealth and sometimes simply running and turning to escape our pursuer. This can be frustrating at times, especially when we are desperately trying to solve a puzzle in the dark and are discovered for the umpteenth time. However, this difficulty also contributes to the game's tension and atmosphere.
One of the things I liked most about Scholar's Mate is how it manages to maintain constant tension. Sound design plays a crucial role in this. The sound effects, especially the chaser's footsteps, are excellent and really make you feel that danger is always nearby. I highly recommend using headphones to play, as you will be able to fully appreciate the quality of the sound design and feel your skin crawl every time you hear those footsteps approaching.

Visually, Scholar’s Mate has its ups and downs. On the one hand, the interior environments are well detailed and the lighting helps create an eerie atmosphere. However, in well-lit areas (which, fortunately, aren't many), you can see hard or jagged edges that can take you out of the immersion a bit. Personally, I didn't find it a major problem, since most of the time we are in the dark, where these details go unnoticed.
The puzzles in Scholar's Mate are varied and challenging. Some require searching the environment for clues, others involve collecting and matching objects, and there are some really complex ones that can leave you scratching your head for a long time. I must admit that a couple of times I had to resort to searching for some online guide to move forward. But hey, I'm not ashamed to admit it! After all, part of the fun is in the challenge.

Something that I also found interesting is the origin of the game's title. “Scholar’s Mate” refers to a classic checkmate move in chess, and I think it is a pretty accurate description of the essence of the game. Just like chess, Scholar's Mate requires cunning and mental power to reach the end. Every move must be calculated, every decision can mean the difference between success and failure.
One aspect that can be a little frustrating is the movement system.Controls can feel a little clunky at times, especially when it comes to interacting with small objects or turning dials. However, with a little practice, you get used to it and it stops being a major problem.

I cannot fail to mention thesupernatural hearingof our pursuer, which seems exaggerated to me. Sometimes it seems like he can hear us even if we're on a different floor, which can be a little unfair. However, this also helps keep the tension high at all times, so I guess it's a necessary evil. But it would be appreciated if it wasn't sooo exaggerated.
Despite these small drawbacks, I must say that Scholar’s Mate pleasantly surprised me. Isa game that manages to effectively combine psychological horror with challenging puzzles, creating a unique and immersive experience. The sense of satisfaction you get from solving a particularly difficult puzzle, only to then have to desperately flee from your pursuer, is simply addictive.

If you are a fan of horror games and puzzles, you should definitely give Scholar's Mate a try. It may not be perfect, but it offers an intense and challenging experience that is sure to keep you interested. Do you dare to face the horrors that lurk in the corridors of this abandoned psychiatric hospital?
