[Meeting…] Doom Patrol

It has been a long time since this section has talked about a group of characters instead of just one, specifically from the Rogues, so today it's a multiple Getting to Know…, since I have dedicated it to a group of “heroes”. I put it in quotes, because although They have fulfilled the role of heroes on many occasions, it is not that it is something vocational, since we meet characters whose powers are more of a problem than a solution.

Fortunately An intelligent man in a wheelchair brought them together and formed a group with those marginalized people. to try to bring out the best in each one and give them something resembling a family. The Doom Patrol (also known as the Doom Patrol) was born.

It is very possible that the description of this group made you think of Charles Xavier and his X-men and it's not a coincidence, since the first number of the x-men appeared a few months after the creation of the Doom Patrol and the truth is that they didn't even bother to hide where they had gotten the inspiration from, because even the phrase that accompanied the comics was practically the same.

On more than one occasion, Arnold Drake has stated that is totally convinced that the x-men They were based on the Doom Patrol, and that due to the dancing of artists between both companies, it is possible that a colleague found out what type of group the group was. Doom Patrol when he was explaining it to Murrai Boltinoff (DC's editor at that time) and went elsewhere with that idea, giving room (in addition to the months of difference between the first comics of each series) for Marvel to make their own version of the group. It may sound bitter, but the truth is that I think Arnold is absolutely right, after all, how many possibilities were there for two groups formed by marginalized characters led by a man in a wheelchair to be created by chance and with a difference of a few months?

Obviously we are faced with one of those cases in which The copy has been much more popular than the original, but if you think about it, the x-men They long ago stopped giving the feeling of being marginalized characters in their own world (has anyone ever thought that being an X-men is a curse?), while the Doom Patrol He has always had condemnation very much in mind, not only because of the tragedies of his scripts, but also because his sales have faltered and have ended the group on more than one occasion.

MARGINALIZED WITH POWERS THEY NEVER ASKED FOR

Having explained all of the above, we only have to present this group, focusing on the characters who gave it life for the first time (and two who joined later) because, as happens with many other groups, there have been line-up changes during the subsequent years, so I prefer to focus on the originals.

The Chief: Niles Caulder is a genius in the broadest sense of the word, he is capable of creating impossible inventions, thinking of strategies in a matter of seconds and it seems that he always has a solution for any situation that arises, no matter how complex it may be. Caulder is the father figure of the team and the person who will bring them together and convince them that they can gain acceptance from society if they demonstrate their goodness and heroism.

Due to his paralysis, Caulder does not usually accompany the Doom Patrol into battle, but he guides them using a microphone and a camera, to be able to help them in critical moments or when something unforeseen happens, such as General Immortus, one of the Doom Patrol's classic enemies, appearing.

Far from having a rivalry based exclusively between the fight of good and evil, General Immortus and Niles Caulder they have a common past, since both were collaborators until Caulder discovered the true plans of Immortus, who tried to get rid of his young assistant; something he only half achieved, as it left him in a wheelchair.

Elasti-Girl: Rita Far was a prominent athlete and popular movie star who was in the habit of performing her own stunts. During a shoot she suffered an accident that led her to inhale strange fumes. After recovering from the accident, she discovered that her body had the ability to grow until it became a giant or shrink until it was reduced to a few centimeters. Obviously, she did not have the ability to control this power at will, so her acting career and her life took a 180 degree turn until she became an outcast scared of her own powers.

Rita's incredible skill was key to many of the Doom Patrol's adventures, as she was the one in charge of fighting giant monsters and destroying or saving huge areas of land. Obviously, having a movie star in the group piques the interest (and instincts) of some of his peers. Furthermore, unlike the rest of the original members of the group, Rita could pass for an ordinary person.

Robotman: Cliff Steele was a man who dedicated himself to the world of entertainment, specifically to being a daredevil and driving vehicles to do impossible jumps and pirouettes in front of his enormous audience. In one of his shows he had an accident that practically destroyed his entire body, but left his brain intact. After an impossible operation performed by Niles Caulder, Cliff was able to continue living, but now in the body of a robot.

Tras el rechazo inicial que le supuso ser un robot con cerebro humano, Steele se dedicó en cuerpo y alma a su profesión, pero comprobó que sus rivales no querían competir contra el, ya que no era justo para ellos, pues Steele era un robot y ni siquiera correría riesgo al efectuar sus alocadas proezas. Estos hechos provocaron que Cliff se convirtiese en un marginado a todos los niveles hasta que fue reclutado por Niles Caulder para la Doom Patrol.

Negative Man: Larry Trainor era un piloto de avión, durante la prueba de un nuevo modelo de capaz de volar más alto que cualquier otro perdió el conocimiento y terminó estrellandose.  Cuando enviaron otro avión para rescatarle, Larry descubrió que ese segundo avión iba a sufrir un accidente debido al malfuncionamiento del tren de aterrizaje, pero él no podía moverse pues estaba atrapado en su maltrecho avión. En ese momento una silueta negra salió del cuerpo de Larry, voló hacia el otro avión, reparó el tren de aterrizaje y volvió al cuerpo de Larry en apenas unos segundos.

De alguna manera Larry podía dividirse en dos y usar a su Hombre Negativo para hacer cosas increíbles, pero a cambio, su cuerpo real quedaba totalmente indefenso e inmóvil y además, si el Hombre Negativo no volvía a él en aproximadamente un minuto, Larry moriría. Del mismo modo, la obtención de sus poderes hizo que este personaje se volviese radiactivo, de manera que se vio forzado a recubrir su cuerpo de una especie de vendajes especiales para contener esa radiación, privándole así de poder vivir una vida normal.

Mento: Steve Daiton es uno de los hombres más ricos del mundo, tras construir un casco especial que le dotaba de habilidades increíbles como la telepatía o la telequinesis ingresó en la Doom Patrol. Daiton no entró en el equipo por compartir sus ideales y ni siquiera parece interesado en llevarse bien con sus compañeros, excepto por Elasti-girl, pues resulta que Daiton quería impresionar a la chica y eso lo llevó a convertirse en un marginado voluntario, al menos podemos decir que la jugaba le salió medio bien, pues él y Rita Farr se terminaron casando.

Su casco especial le permitió convertirse en héroe, pero también tiene un efecto negativo en Daiton, pues puede provocarle diversas enfermedades mentales como la paranoia o demencia, lo cual sumado a su arrogancia, hace que estemos hablando de un tipo algo difícil de tratar.

Beast Boy: Cuando Garfield Logan era un niño contrajo una extraña enfermedad de la cual solo se libró al recibir un tratamiento experimental que cambió el color de su piel y le dio poderes extraordinarios que le harian ganarse el mote de Beast Boy y Changeling.

Garfield puede cambiar su forma por la de animales y actuar como tales, de manera que si se convierte en delfín puede nadar y sobrevivir en el mar y si se convierte en pájaro puede volar sin problemas. Los límites de estos poderes son un tanto relativos, pues Garfield es capaz de convertirse incluso en animales extintos, como dinosaurios.

Además de ser uno de los primeros miembros de la Doom Patrol (donde terminó siendo hijo adoptivo de Elasti-girl y Mento) este personaje ha sido un miembro activo de los Teen Titans durante muchos años.

CONVICTED IN SALES

Pese a que el éxito inicial de la Doom Patrol fue notable (incluso se cambió el nombre de la colección My Greatest Adventure por el de Doom Patrol) poco a poco su fama se fue desvaneciendo, provocando una inminente cancelación de la serie y un trágico final en las páginas de sus cómics.

En años posteriores se trató de resucitar a la Doom Patrol, manteniendo a algún miembro original y creando nuevos personajes o variantes de los existentes. En los diversos intentos por volver a llevar a este equipo a la fama se perdió gran parte de su encanto original, pues por momentos parecían un equipo de superhéroes normal y corriente y no uno formado por tipos poco sociables y marginados.

Afortunadamente, llegó Grant Morrison, el cual dio una vuelta de tuerca al equipo, volviendo a la Doom Patrol en algo más rebuscado y extraño de lo que era en sus inicios. La actualización de Morrison y su continuación hecha por Rachel Pollack de este equipo funcionó temporalmente y nos trajo algunas de las historias más atrevidas y extrañas de este grupo.

Lamentablemente, la Doom Patrol parece no llegar a cuajar entre el gran público y pese a los intentos de DC Comics, siguen siendo unos secundarios si lo comparamos con otros personajes, lo cual parece tener bastante sentido ¿no se supone que eran unos marginados a los que nadie quiere?

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

La Patrulla Condenada es un grupo marginal tanto dentro como fuera de los cómics, pero es tremendamente interesante, especialmente su etapa original o la de Morrison (las dos más extrañas sin duda).

Pese a su aparente falta de humanidad, los miembros de este equipo son muy humanos, especialmente en el mal sentido de la palabra. Los roces, envidias y tretas poco éticas que difícilmente veréis en otros grupos de superhéroes, afloran en este equipo a la que la situación se tuerce o sucede algo que no parece ser del todo normal. De hecho, incluso la creación del mismo nos hace preguntarnos ¿Creó Niles Caulder a la Doom Patrol por motivos altruistas o tenía otras intenciones menos bondadosas al hacerlo?

Los cómics de Doom Patrol originales tienen un estilo que mezcla cómics de superhéroes y películas de ciencia ficción sesenteras, quizás por eso me gustan tanto estos personajes. Además, muchos de los enemigos de este grupo son tremendamente extravagantes y no lo digo solo por los bichos gigantes a los que se suele enfrentar Rita Farr.

Por ejemplo, El General Inmortus es el típico villano que desea dominar el mundo (y aun así es un tanto peculiar, pues lleva viviendo siglos) pero en el momento en el que te encuentras a personajes como Monsieur Mallah (un Gorila militar enamorado de un cerebro que va metido en un frasco) o Animal-Vegetal-Mineral Man (el  nombre lo dice todo) te cuestionas cosas sobre la salud mental de los guionistas y es ahí, donde creo que esta el encanto de la colección, al menos para mí.

Como recomendaciones, solo puedo volver a mencionar los cómics originales de Doom Patrol y su etapa de Morrison, aunque las otras etapas de este grupo también pueden llegar a gustaros y en cierto modo complementan la historia del mismo. Recientemente DC ha tratado de relanzar este grupo en más de una ocasión, concretamente en 2004, 2009 y 2014, así que si preferís los cómics actuales, también podéis buscar a la Doom Patrol en ellos.

Como curiosidad final decir que Marvel y DC crearon la X-Patrol, una mezcla de la Doom Patrol y los x-men para la colección Amalgam que apareció tras los eventos de Marvel Vs DC.
