[Meeting…] Joseph Joestar

In previous articles I have already talked about some characters from the series Jojo's Bizarre Adventure as Dio Brando (antagonist of the first and third stages of the series) or Yoshikage Kira (antagonist of the fourth stage).

The good thing about This series is that it is divided into self-contained stages, each one with its own characters and based on a place and decade different from the previous one, so that they can be enjoyed individually without knowing the story that happened before (something to be appreciated considering how old the manga is).

However, it must also be clarified that sometimes there are references to events from previous stages or some characters appear in several stages (suffering the corresponding aging that this entails) but that does not prevent us from enjoying a specific stage without having seen the rest.

The character I am going to talk about He is one of the most constant in the series, since it is the protagonist of the second stage (Battle Tendency) is part of the group of main characters in the third stage (Stardust Crusaders) and is a couple of sporadic appearances in the fourth (Diamond is Unbreakable), so let's not waste any more time and get to know Joseph Joestar.

A twist on the typical Shonen hero

Joseph Joestar is the grandson of Jonathan Joestar, the “stepbrother” of the evil Dio Brando. To defeat Dio, Jonathan learned from Will Zeppeli the Hamon technique, which allows him to channel the body's energy through breathing, thus obtaining enormous power that can be applied in many different ways.

Jonathan Joestar's wife was in charge of raising Joseph, since his real parents had died when he was little. Even though He has never been interested in becoming a warrior or a knight defending justice. Like his grandfather, Joseph can use the power of Hamon instinctively, which makes him a human with more strength than usual and without too many qualms about using it in case someone bothers him.

Joseph is a somewhat special character, because although he is the main character, does not exactly fit into the clichés of the protagonists of the Shonen genre. For example, despite knowing how to use the Hamon and being stronger than an ordinary human, Joseph is not stronger than his rivals, and because of this he always has to resort to his wits (which includes cheating or gambling everything) to beat his rivals. Nor is it the best example of education, respect or morality.

Joseph's life would have been that of a normal boy except for the appearance of some ancient men who were underground and woke up when they were discovered by the company of a friend of the Joestar family. Those four men (Santana, ACDC, Wham and Kars) are practically Gods and bad luck wants Joseph to be in charge of stopping them.

Because of this, Joseph ends up training with Caesar Zeppeli (Will Zeppeli's grandson) under the orders of Lisa Lisa, which ends up greatly increasing his power. But even so he always seems to be at a disadvantage compared to the rival he fights against and I'm not talking about a temporary disadvantage that disappears during the fight, but rather a real disadvantage that represents a handicap for this young character.

Maybe because of that Joseph trained and perfected a special technique that allowed him to survive situations where others would perish.… or what is the same, He is an expert on the run or slipping away from any situation that you consider too dangerous.  Others would decide to die with honor in a legendary fight, but Joseph prefers to try to get out of trouble by doing such unheroic acts as surrendering, playing dead, or running away while he thinks about how to get rid of his adversary.

Despite this, I would not dare to say that this character is a coward, he is simply more conscious and human than other protagonists of similar mangas, because let's be honest, who wants to die at 18 years old fighting against a guy about whom you know nothing at all?

Another way Joseph differs from other heroes (and his heroic grandfather) is that he is not passionate about training, even when he knows he should. Joseph prefers to have fun, read comics, watch movies, travel or practice magic tricks, skills that are in no way linked to increasing his strength or improving his techniques, but which Due to the quick wit of this character, they end up serving as inspiration for him to make some of his comebacks. historical.

Due to his enormous ability to observe and decipher out-of-place details (learned by watching magic tricks performed) Joseph masters the art of getting on his rivals' nerves better than anyone., because he has the annoying habit of guessing and saying the phrases they plan to say before they do it, thus making them furious and taking advantage of that to his advantage.

Independientemente de su particular manera de comportarse, sus pocas ganas de combatir o sus nulas aspiraciones a ser héroe, de lo que no hay duda es que Joseph es un maestro en el arte de sobrevivir, algo bastante útil cuando se pertenece a una familia donde los varones no parecen vivir demasiado.

Old Joseph goes to Egypt

In Stardust Crusaders, la tercera etapa de Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, el malvado Dio Brando ha despertado de su letargo y todos los miembros de la familia Joestar sufren las consecuencias de manera directa, al aparecer en ellos un fuerte poder llamado Stand, que les confiere habilidades especiales y con el cual están ligados en cuerpo y mente, de manera que si el Stand recibe daño, el portador también (y viceversa). Lamentablemente los Stands son entidades muy poderosas y no todo el mundo puede soportarlas, de manera que si el portador es demasiado débil, el Stand termina matándolo. Ese fue el caso de la hija de Joseph, que al no poder dominar a su Stand cayó enferma gravemente.

Joseph (con casi 70 años) se ve forzado a viajar hacia Egipto para acabar con Dio. Obviamente no lo hará solo, pues le acompaña su amigo y vidente Avdol (también llamado Abdul) y su rebelde nieto Jotaro Kujo. El Stand de Jotaro se llama Star Platinum y es especialmente preciso, rápido y poderoso en combate, Avdol por su parte puede invocar a Magician’s Red, un enorme pájaro con la capacidad de usar ataques de fuego. Ambos Stands son muy poderosos y útiles para eliminar rivales.

Joseph no tuvo tanta suerte, ya que su Stand es Hermit Purple y es prácticamente inútil en combate, ya que solo es una especie de látigo de espinas rosas que Joseph usa de vez en cuando como cuerda. Sin embargo Hermit Purple es muy útil haciendo otro tipo de cosas, pues puede rastrear a personas usando una cámara de fotos o televisión para mostrar su ubicación y también es capaz de crear mapas de la zona donde se encuentra.

El hecho de ser el más mayor del grupo de protagonistas y tener el Stand más débil y extraño no debería afectar a la utilidad de Joseph debido a que sabe usar el poder del Hamon ¿verdad? Pues… lo cierto es que Joseph es un vago y dejó de entrenar cuando era joven, de manera que su Hamon es casi anecdótico, lo cual deja la supervivencia de este personaje en manos de su ingenio y sus compañeros.

Tal y como era de esperar, Joseph se las apañó para sobrevivir una vez más pero poco le duró la paz y la tranquilidad, porque una década más tarde tuvo que volver a Japón para conocer a un hijo ilegítimo que tuvo durante uno de sus viajes, y es que nunca he dicho que Joseph fuese un santo.

Conclusion and Recommendations

Joseph Joestar en un caso un tanto particular dentro del manga debido a su particular carácter, propenso a las bromas, el escaqueo, las trampas y hacer cosas que jamás resultarían naturales en otros protagonistas.

En su etapa de joven, Joseph es un tsunami de carisma y genialidad, aun cuando sabes que terminará haciendo algo indigno para salvar el pellejo, también te hace pensar que en algún momento hará alguna locura que le permite alzarse con la victoria, aunque sea de manera temporal.

El viejo Joseph de Stardust Crusaders es un personaje mucho más olvidable. Sigue siendo carismático, pero no luce como antes, sigue siendo ingenioso (y tramposo) pero tampoco es tan eficaz como antaño, es inteligente y sabio, pero tampoco tanto como le gustaría serlo. El viejo Joseph es al fin y al cabo un hombre de 69 años, que ha dejado atrás sus tiempos de juventud y comprueba como las nuevas generaciones han venido para sustituir a la suya en las tareas importantes, algo que para otros sería una maldición, pero para Joseph significa que por fin puede desentenderse de todo.  Finalmente, el Joseph de Diamond is Unbrekable es senil, débil  y apenas ve bien, es el paso final antes de terminar una vida larga y llena de aventuras y aunque aun puede sorprender con algún pequeño destello, no es conveniente que lo haga por su propia salud.

Mirando sus diferentes etapas podemos decir que Joseph también es atípico como personaje general, pues normalmente los protagonistas no envejecen y en caso de hacerlo se quedan en una edad que los mantenga en activo. En el caso de Joseph, vemos como el personaje envejece con dignidad, pero finalmente sucumbe a los síntomas de la vejez que lo vuelven un personaje prácticamente inútil y vulnerable. Esa situación, lejos de estropearlo, hace que parezca más humano, pues en el fondo todos sabemos que el tiempo juega en nuestra contra y que la juventud nunca regresa.

Podréis encontrar a Joseph en la segunda, tercera y cuarta etapa de Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, ya sea en su serie de animación o en el manga original, que actualmente se está editando en español gracias a la editorial Ivrea.
