When talking about great Sega sports games, things like Virtua Tennis either Virtua Striker. However, I have always enjoyed much more Sega Soccer Slam, the crazy soccer game developed by Black Box Games, which appeared for PlayStation 2, Gamecube and Xbox.

Sega Soccer Slam It is one of those games that even those who are not fans of the “king sport” can like because ignores practically all the rules of football and is left with only the basics. There are no offsides, there are no fouls, the ball cannot even leave the field of play, which gives us a fast-paced match, which is accentuated by the small size of the field, the possibility of using powers and the particularity that the teams are made up of only 3 players and the goalkeeper.

Each player can shoot, jump, rotate (to avoid stealing the ball) and of course, hit (punches, flying kicks... everything) in a very simple way (each action is a button), we can also use a Turbo button to make our characters run more in a limited way. Depending on the character we control, we will see that their blows and kicks vary quite a bit, so that even between two similar characters, we will see playable differences.

All teams have a power that links to the team name and logo (fire, electricity...), and this is activated with one of the triggers. At that moment our player will change color and will be much faster and stronger than the rest, so if we attack the opponent in this state, the blow will be much stronger and if we shoot at goal, the shot will be more striking and faster.

To use that power we have to have the special bar sufficiently full, which will rise little by little as we play. Next to the bar we will see a note (pass, shoot, jump, rotate...) that will vary and that is basically a condition that, if met, will fill the bar more quickly.

When we have the bar full we can also make a Super pass, which will send the ball to the sky and mark on the ground the area where it will fall. If we can take one of our players to that area and press the kick button, he will jump into the clouds and do a special kick called Killer Kick, in true style. Champions (Captain Tsubasa). Of course, nothing prevents the opponent from punching us in the face when we are about to reach the kick zone and the super pass comes to nothing.

On specific occasions, a spotlight will appear on the field with our team's logo. If we enter it and shoot, we will see the goal in front of our character and we will have a few seconds to aim our shot at it. It's basically a kick Bullet Time of Matrix.

The curious thing about this game is that despite having powers, shots from the sky and bullet time, they are not as unbalancing as they may seem. If we are good at moving our players and passing the ball at the right time, we can win games without having to depend on them. Although of course, if things get ugly, you can always try to come back with individuality using all your power.

Initially the game has 6 teams that try to represent (with greater or lesser success) different parts of the world with their players, turning some of them into stereotypes that may one day be considered politically incorrect (as happens with the saga Punch Out!!).

https://youtube.com/watch?v=VKjKs_2kp5g%3Fversion%3D3%26rel%3D1%26showsearch%3D0%26showinfo%3D1%26iv_load_policy%3D1%26fs%3D1%26hl%3Des-ES%26autohide%3D2%26wmode%3Dtransparent

Each player (except the goalkeeper) is unique within his own class, which is delimited by his size of the three available: the small ones (fast and weak), the tall ones (more balanced) and the large ones (slow and strong). This means that the strongest of the small ones will not be stronger than one of the large ones, but at the same time, there are enough differences between those who are of the same class to notice them when playing.

The general values of the team (which we can see when we choose it) are made based on the attributes of its 3 members, so if we want a team that delivers good punches and strong kicks, it is better to choose a team with large characters, but if we want to play stealth and avoid physical contact, we will be better off with one that is made up of small players.

In total we find the following equipment:

VOLTA: It is one of the teams that represents Europe and is made up of Angus (a funny Scottish boxer), Dante (a vain Italian) and Arsenault (a pouty Frenchman with the typical “Jean Reno” look). Volta is a very balanced team (it has one player of each type) and very fast, since even its big player (Angus) is faster than the rest of its type. Its stadium is built in ancient ruins and its members master the power of electricity.

SUBZERO: The other European team is made up of Half-Pint (a Punk-looking English Hooligan), Lola (a dancing German girl always ready to go to a Rave) and Kiril (a patriotic Russian cosmonaut). It is an offensive team (having two great characters) and one of those that best demonstrates that two players of the same type can be very different, since Kiril is more reliable than the anarchic and brute Half-Pint. The team has the power of ice and its stadium is located in a snowy castle.

TOXIC: Team representing North America. It is made up of Raine (a Canadian eco-terrorist), Duke (an American sports star) and Nova (a gifted Native American boy). With two small characters and one big one, Toxic is a fast team and their specialty is passing. As it could not be otherwise, the stadium and the team's special power are nuclear themed.

THE FIRE: This team represents the other part of America and is made up of El Diablo (a Mexican wrestler), Rico (an Argentine soccer player) and Madeira (a Brazilian dancer and martial artist). Like Volta, it has one player from each class, so it's very balanced. Their stadium is in the middle of a jungle and obviously the power of a team called El Fuego is… fire.

SPIRIT: Representing the African continent we have this team, which is made up of Djimon (a Kenyan shaman), Zari (a Nigerian athlete) and Kaimani (a South African surfer). It is another balanced team thanks to the fact that it has players from all three classes, but it has always seemed to me that it was below Volta or El Fuego, although it is true that this team is better at strong shots. Their stadium is in the middle of an Oasis and the team's power is a kind of lilac energy that makes skulls appear from the ground.
