CONGO (1995)

After the success ofjurassic park, Hollywood did not hesitate to search among Michael Critchton's other books for another work of his to make into a film, and the one chosen wasCongo.

In this story we find an expedition that seeks to carrya trained gorilla to its place of origin,because she is having strange nightmares that she captures in paintings. An expedition of that caliber cannot be done without a philanthropist to put up money and that is when Herkermer Homolka (played by Curry) appears to pay for the expensive adventure. Obviously, not everything is as it seems, as the journey will be full of dangers and secrets, among which areHomolka's true intentions,who has not been totally sincere with the protagonists.

I admit that it is not a great movie and in fact I consider it a “guilty pleasure”, butI think it's worth recommending it to all those who missed it at the time., because despite its flaws, it is still very entertaining. In this film, in addition to Tim Curry we can see Dylan Wash, Laura Linney and Ernie Hudson (who many of us know for playing Winston Zeddemore inGhostbusters).

CLUE (1985)

This film is based on the popular board game “Clue”, where we have to guess who the murderer is among all the characters participating in the game.

Adapting a board game into a movie is a somewhat particular bet, but the truth is that in this case, the idea is interesting enough to make a suspense film, which in this case is also a comedy (which gives it a somewhat special focus). Tim Curry plays the role of the butler, who coincidentallyis usually the main suspectin these types of situations. This is one of those movies thatthey play with the viewerand they allow you to speculate to see if they can guess the mystery before the film itself tells it to us and for that alone, it is worth taking a look.

MUPPETS TREASURE ISLAND (1996)

Los Muppets son historia de la televisióny sus películas suelen ser mucho más interesantes de lo que puede parecer de primeras, sobretodo cuando se basan en algo clásico, como en este caso, donde veremos una reinterpretación deLa Isla del Tesorode Robert Louis Stevenson.

Un clásico de la literatura sobre piratas y tesoros, adaptado con Muppets, con canciones geniales y la aparición de Tim Curry interpretando al inquietante Long John Silver, estodo lo que necesito para recomendar esta fantástica película de aventuras, que además es la única de esta lista que pude disfrutar en el momento de su estreno.Nos os dejéis llevar por posibles prejuicios y dadle una oportunidad,es genial.

IT (1990)

Esta miniserie fue la que popularizó al payaso PennyWisepara todos aquellos que no eran fans de Stephen King y por lo tanto no habían leído su larguísima obraIT. En esta adaptación (también conocida comoEsoeitherIT: El payaso asesino)veremos a un ser paranormal llamado IT que disfruta asesinand niños, especialmente en su forma de payaso (la cual seguramente también causó pesadillas entre muchos espectadores).

Durante la década de los 60, el payasoPennywise se aparece a algunos niños, los cuales terminan muertos, eventualmente un grupo de niñostermina uniéndose contra ély deciden ir a su guarida para intentar eliminarlo. Durante décadas, todo parece estar en calma, peroen los años 90 It regresay los niños, ahora ya mayores, tienen que volver a lidiar con el problema.

Me atrevería a decir que el PennyWisees el papel de Tim Curry más famosoy aunque es cierto que se han hecho adaptaciones posteriores del libro, su interpretación sigue siendo muy icónica.

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975)

Y me he dejado lo mejor para el final,la película que demuestra que Tim Curry nunca ha tenido miedo a naday el clásico de culto que lo inmortalizará para siempre:Rocky Horror Picture Show,la cual está basada en la obra de teatro musicalThe Rocky Horror Showde Richard O’Brien, quien también se encargó de la película, en la cual interpreta a Riff Raff (el mayordomo).Tim Curry también participó en la obra de teatrodurante varios años y repitió su papel en la película.

The Rocky Horror Picture Showempieza cuando a Brad y Janet (la típica pareja de novios puritanos) se les estropea el coche en plena noche, ydeciden buscar refugio en una mansión cercana, donde al parecer se está celebrado una animada fiesta, en la cual conocerán al anfritrión, el Doctor Frank-N -Furter (interpretado por Tim Curry)una especie de científico locovestido con lencería de mujer, el cual muestra orgulloso a sus visitantes su última creación: Rocky, un chico rubio y cachas diseñado específicamente para dar placer al doctor. Ante tal extraña situación, Brad y Janet intentan salir de la mansión, pero deberán pasar la noche en ella,en la cual pasará absolutamente de todo.

Esta película es un tanto inclasificable, pues mezcla tópicos de películas de terror y ciencia ficción, con libertad (y libertinaje) sexual. De manera que no es de extrañar que ensu estreno no encontrase un enorme público dispuesto a verla, sin embargo,con el paso del tiempo fueron aumentando sus defensores, creando así un público fiel, que se ha visto aumentado por nuevas generaciones que abrazaron su descaro y su originalidad (además de la increíble banda sonora). El hecho de que entre sus personajes principales apareciesen actores que años después serían mucho más conocidos (Susan Sarandon y el propio Tim Curry) y contase además con el músico (y también actor) Meat Loaf, lograron aumentar la curiosidad por este musical.

A día de hoyla obra de teatro se sigue representando por diversos países y la película se suele proyectar con cierta constancia en pequeñas salas, donde incluso te dan una bolsa de “objetos necesarios” en la entrada, para usarlos en momentos específicos de la película, creando una especie de ritual entre la obra y los espectadores. Tuve la suerte de disfrutar de una de esas proyecciones y entiendo perfectamente quesi bien Rocky Horror Picture Show no es para todo el mundo, aquellos que la disfrutan, lo hacen con pasión.
