[Very Top] Five gems from the Mortadelo and Filemón comics

The farewell of Francisco Ibáñez has left many comic fans completely confused. It is for this reason that today I wanted to do a more personal article, far from the classic video games that I usually write about. This is a selection of five classic jewels from those idiots calledMortadelo and Filemón.

These two halters, T.I.A. agents, have lived many adventures that only the good work of maestro Ibáñez has been able to represent. It is impossible to choose which are the best comics of this pair of calves, but I got wet and here you have a personal selection offive classic adventures starring the most famous secret agents of national comics.

Atomic Sulfate (1969)

It is nothing more and nothing less than, let's say,first long adventure of this couple of secret agents. Furthermore, it is possibly the one that hasthe most exquisite drawingthroughout Ibáñez's comics career, with many details and greater realism in certain cases.

The story revolves arounda concoction invented by Professor Bacterioand it is called “atomic sulfate”. It is abouta powerful insecticidefor pest control in the field. The problem is that, like every Bacterium invention, it works the other way around, andInstead of eliminating insects, what it does is make them giant.

One of the bottles containing the failed “atomic sulfate”,has fallen into the hands of an agent of the Republic of Tyrania. The evil dictatorBruteztrausenHe intends to use it to dominate the world, and that is where Mortadelo and Filemón come into the picture.

A marvel on all levels that serves as a parody of a Germany in which they have always enjoyed great success. And if that were not enough, this Spanish comic classic served as the basis for the plot ofThe Great Adventure of Mortadelo and Filemón, his first film with real actors from the great Javier Fesser.

Street Safari (1969)

AfterAtomic SulfatearriveAgainst the “Gang” of “Chicharrón”, another essential comic. We are left with the next one, withStreet Safari, another great adventure in which Mortadelo and Filemón have to deal again with some of Professor Bacterio's mistakes.

The plot tells us thatA thief enters the Bacterio laboratory, causing the animals there to escape.. And although Mortadelo says that all but one escaped, alluding to Professor Bacterio's bungling, this represents an enormous danger.

TOeach of these animals has been inoculated with a serum that modifies their characteristics. So, Mortadelo and Filemón will go in search of Dorotea (a chicken whose eggs will make you crow beautifully), Zacarias (a police dog turned thief) or Vicenta (a flying cow), without forgetting a donkey and a monkey that have some very familiar names.

A hilarious adventure to which I have enormous affection for beingone of the first “comics” of this couple that I read when I was little. On the other hand, it should be noted thatStreet Safarigave name to the video gameMortadelo and Filemón II: Street Safari, inspired a little (a little) by this work by the great Ibáñez.

Courage and… To the bull! (1970)

Another one considered a marvel by many fans of the genre.Courage and… To the Bull!, appeared afterStreet Safari, once again stands out for beingone of the comics that Ibáñez took great care of in terms of drawing and detail..

Bacterio again, but this time there is no invention. It is aboutlos planos del denominado “proyecto Bartolo”. Estos planoshan sido robados por la banda del Ratay guardados en algún lugar del crucero “Ile du Soria”.

Mortadelo y Filemón embarcarán en ese crucero para recuperar los planos e impedir que el Rata y sus secuaces se hagan con ellos. Lo que jamás podrán imaginar es el lugar exacto dónde se ha escondido el tubito con los planos de marras.

Como es de esperar,Courage and… To the Bull!es un cómic redondo en todos los sentidos. Los entendidos en la materia hablan de la influencia que tuvo el cómic francés en él. De hecho,Ibáñez había realizado el cómic con otros personajescon la idea de venderlo fuera de España. Esto último es porque tuvo una trifulca con el director de la editorial Bruguera, pero todo se arregló y cambió a dichos personajes, que no sabemos quiénes eran, por los burricalvos de siempre.

El Caso del Bacalao (1970)

Ibáñez no paraba de trabajar. TrasCourage and… To the Bull!llegabaEl Caso del Bacalao, un genial disparate en el que Mortadelo y Filemón se las verán con toda una banda de gánsteres capitaneados por el terrible Lucrecio Borgio.

El bacalao ha bajado drásticamente de precio, consiguiendo que la gente lo compre a un duro el kilo, por lo quela ciudad está saturada de bacalao. Ya conocéis eso de que el bacalao provoca mucha sed, ¿verdad? Pues ese es el problema, hay tanto bacalao quela gente está sedienta.

¿Qué porras está pasando en realidad? Ahí es cuando Mortadelo y Fielmón entran en escena, descubriendo que la banda deLucrecio Borgioestá detrás de todo esto e intenta sacar tajada de la situación. ¿Su plan?Hacer que la gente pague lo que sea por un poco de agua para calmar su sed, algo que acaba, cómo no, en tronchantes consecuencias.

El Caso del Bacalaofue una historia dividida en diferentes capítulos, cada uno con su propio título, perfecta para incluirse en publicaciones semanales comoPulgarcitoeitherMortadelo. Al parecer no está considerada una de las historias más brillantes de esta pareja del humor, peroen mi opinión es una con las que más me he divertido. Sus gags son brutales.

Objetivo Eliminar al «Rana» (1975)

Avanzamos un poco en el tiempo, hasta 1975, para hablar del último cómic que hoy os proponemos. Su nombre esObjetivo Eliminar al “Rana”y es otra aventura que ningún fan de Mortadelo y Filemón se debería perder.

¿Qué quién es el “Rana”?Es el jefe de una organización enemiga conocida como H.I.G.O.(Hermandad Internacional de Gamberros Orbitales). Se le conoce así por su tremenda habilidad para salir airoso de cualquier situación.

Mortadelo y Filemón deberán infiltrase como agentes dobles en el H.I.G.O.y así ganarse el favor del “Rana”, que quiere acabar con el bueno del Súper de una vez por todas. Solo estos dos pollinos serán capaces de ganarse el favor del “Rana” yevitar que su “querido” Superintendente Vicente se vaya para el otro barrio.

Todo un conjunto de surrealistas y divertidísimas situaciones en las que, muchas veces sin querer, el “Rana” hará nombre a su mote y saldrá por patas ileso mientras Mortadelo y Filemón se llevan la peor parte. Por cierto, se dice que algunos de los gags de este cómic fueron utilizados enEl Tirano.De hecho, yo diría que el diseño físico de Antofagasto Panocho, antagonista deEl Tirano, está inspirado en el amigo “Rana”.
