[Analysis] Emperor Joker

Superman, the most dangerous criminal in Gotham City, a man capable of bending steel with his hands and jumping buildings effortlessly, has once again escaped from Arkham Asylum where he was imprisoned for having murdered Lex Luthor. Fortunately Bizarro, everyone's favorite superhero, catches him again like he does every night.

Wait a minute, what?

That would be the most logical reaction if someone reads the first pages of Emperor Joker, in case you have not first been informed about the plot of this particular saga. And yes, I say saga because this story (started with Superman: Arkham and ended with Emperor Joker) was shared between the different Superman collections, so that they were all interrupted to cover these events, which were narrated in the following issues:

Superman 160 – 161, Adventures of Superman 582 – 583, Superman: Man of Steel 104 – 105, Action Comics 769 – 770 and Emperor Joker 1.

Fortunately, those who do not want to search for individual numbers of superman, they can get all that history compiled in a single volume called Superman: Emperor Joker.

The world is crazy, crazy

Having explained this, I will try to comment again on what happens in the comic: Superman escapes from Arkham, but Bizarro soon goes after him to capture him, as he does every night. While this is happening, a strange pixie tries to get close to Superman, but ends up getting hit by a train. For his part, Superman receives a strong blow that makes him reach the property of Lois Lane, owner of Lane Corp, which makes her the most powerful woman in the city, who does not hesitate to hand him over to Bizarro so that he can be locked up in Arkham again.

Strange right? Well, the thing continues showing us again the little pixie who continues looking for Superman, with such bad luck that a safe falls on him, crushing him instantly.

And from there we go to a monastery, where one of the nuns is possessed by some evil entity, so we have to call the highest priest, who dressed as Elvis, with a mask of the mascot of Elvis. Mad Magazine and armed with a siphon, he will perform an exorcism to rid her of her demons.

Do I continue?

Well, Superman escapes again, to get back in touch with Lois Lane, because for some reason he feels that everything is going wrong, and that she is the only one who can help him. Miss Lane is curious about the criminal's behavior so she keeps him imprisoned on her property with the intention of guessing what he is hiding. But of course, Bizarro catches him again and is taken to a special area to treat his condition, since he suffers from a strong disease called sanity and apparently it is very difficult to cure.

2+2 = FISH

In his confinement, Superman will have time to realize that everything that happens in the world is not normal. It is assumed that he is not a criminal, that cows cannot fly and above all, that 2+2 does not result in FISH, but 4. Our hero will find another person with a madness similar to his: it is Hank Irons, who cannot stop thinking about mathematical formulas that contradict everything that happens around him.

With that support, Superman begins to become aware that it is really impossible for the world to really be as it seems to be, since he remembers things differently, which is why he takes Irons to a steel armor that seems to be linked to his new partner in some way. But Bizarro shows up again to save the day, so between the two heroes, well, criminals they have to fight him. And at that moment our beloved pixie returns, who manages to approach Superman to tell him that if he seeks answers he has to go to the Moon, just before ending up crushed by a weight of 10,000 tons.

While the heroes try to reach the Moon we meet other characters, such as Bizarro's Justice League, or Super Burger Boy, a boy who does not fit into their world either (although perhaps being dressed as a hamburger has something to do with it), who discovers that he has supernatural strength and decides to use it to capture Superman and thus gain Bizarro's sympathy, although on his way he will meet the aforementioned nun, who will convince him that Superman is not really a criminal.

Once on the Moon, Superman and Hank Irons discover that the earth is now shaped like a cube and on each of its faces is the face of the Joker, responsible for everything that happens.

This is the Joker's world, we just live in it

Since the Joker obviously does not have any power that allows him to alter reality, Superman asks the pixie for answers, who turns out to be the owner of the fifth dimension. Mr. Mxyzptlk, a tremendously powerful and practically immortal being whose favorite pastime was annoying Superman for the sake of fun. But since he had the brilliant idea of ​​giving a small percentage of his power to the Joker to see how a real madman would use it, things have gotten much worse, especially because now the pixie only has 1% of his power, with the clown having the remaining 99%.

With the clearest ideas Superman decides reunir a sus antiguos aliados para arreglar la situación. Así entran en escena el Marciano de un metro de alto (que recuerda sospechosamente a Marvin the Martian de los Looney Tunes), Gordinflash (quien es capaz de correr a grandes velocidades hacia sitios donde haya comida), Plastic Man (que se transforma en cajero automático para robar dinero a la gente despistada), Yellow Paper Lantern (con la asombrosa habilidad de hacer sombras con sus manos), Aquaman (un hombre pez incapaz de entrar al agua) y Wonder Woman (una amazona educada para temer a los hombres, que resulta ser una criminal vestida con un delantal).

Por su parte, el Emperador Joker, dueño y señor del mundo, va aumentando su poder cada día que pasa, encargándose de eliminar a cualquier personaje lo suficientemente poderoso como para plantarle cara o quitarle sus poderes. Lamentablemente el poseer la habilidad de hacer cualquier cosa con el mero hecho de desearlo lleva al payaso de Gotham a aburrirse, hasta plantearse si realmente puede destruir todo de manera irreversible.

The end of the beginning!

Ahora que Superman tiene conocimiento de todo lo que está sucediendo y que ha ganado algunos nuevos aliados, sabe que su única posibilidad de devolver el mundo a la normalidad es derrotando al Joker. Pero en su puzle particular falta una pieza que podría ayudarle a solucionarlo todo rápidamente. ¿Podrá Superman derrotar a un ser que es dueño del universo? ¿Serán de utilidad los supuestos héroes que ha reclutado? Y no menos importante, ¿de quién es ese grito que recorre la ciudad cada noche?

Si queréis saberlo os tocará leer el cómic, porque yo no voy a contar nada más.

Emperador Joker es un comic atípico, para empezar porque usa a un enemigo clásico de Batman como principal enemigo de una historia de Superman, que a su vez no es la típica historia de Superman debido a que su trama principal gira alrededor de la construcción y destrucción del universo por causa de la magia de Mr. Mxyzptlk en manos del maníaco payaso de Gotham.

So a lo primero que hay que acostumbrarse al leer este comic es a aceptarlo como tal, olvidarse de lo que supuestamente es un comic de Superman y simplemente entregarse a esta historia, o dicho de otra manera, aceptar que 2+2 = PEZ.

Una vez hecho esto, veremos que la historia en sí es muy extraña y divertida, pero no tiene complicaciones excesivas más allá de su propia extravagancia, y que pese a su innegable originalidad la narración es bastante sencilla, sin grandes alardes  y con algunos momentos predecibles. Sin embargo sí que hay que decir que si el lector desconoce el universo DC, su historia y sus personajes, se perderá algunas referencias y bromas bastante divertidas. No se puede esperar menos cuando vemos que uno de los guionistas es J.M. DeMatteis (al que ya mencioné en mi artículo sobre los Super Colegas).

En lo que refiere al dibujo, sucede algo justificable, pero que no puedo evitar considerar como negativo. Al ser una saga repartida entre las diferentes colecciones de superman (como he aclarado al principio) cada cómic tiene un dibujante diferente y casualmente todos dibujan de una manera muy distinta entre ellos, de manera que cuando te acostumbras a ver el Superman con cara de Buzz Lightyear de Ed McGuinness, te encuentras con el Superman realista de Mike Miller para luego pasar al Superman guaperas de Dough Mahnke y volver a cambiar el estilo de nuevo en el siguiente número, pues en total hay seis dibujantes implicados en esta obra.

No hace falta decir que este cambio de estilo afecta a todos los personajes, fondos, recursos visuales y efectos que nos encontramos en cada uno de los 9 cómics que forman esta historia de más de 200 páginas.

Sin embargo también me gustaría decir un par de cosas positivas, como por ejemplo que en cada viñeta los artistas se han dejado llevar a la hora de incluir locuras como una bomba ACME donde debería estar el Planeta del Daily Planet, edificios raros con formas imposibles o personajes y elementos extraños que no esperaríamos ver en un cómic americano. Además en el libro se incluyen una serie de portadas con el fondo blanco y dos personajes en cada una de ellas, como si fuesen cartas de una baraja, detalle que personalmente me encantó.

So is Emperor Joker worth reading?

Pues mi respuesta más sincera es… depende. Depende de lo que quieras leer. ¿Quieres leer una historia del Joker? ¿Una de Superman? ¿Una trama compleja llena de giros? ¿Un cómic con un apartado artístico impecable?

En cualquiera de esos casos, no aconsejo leerlo.

Ahora bien, ¿eres fan del universo DC y quieres ver a la compañía riéndose de sí misma? ¿Eres tan raro que tu enemigo de Superman favorito es Mr. Mxyzptlk? ¿Quieres leer un comic cuya única finalidad es hacerte sonreír y entretenerte con una historia alocada? ¿Te gustan los “qué pasaría si”? ¿Al leer este artículo te ha entrado curiosidad por saber qué pasa con Superman y el Joker?

En cualquiera de estos casos, aconsejo leerlo.

A mí el cómic me gustó, me reí y disfruté mucho con su primera lectura. No lo volví a leer hasta pasados unos años, y algunas bromas y situaciones me volvieron a hacer gracia, pero hay que tener en cuenta que esta historia es digna de aparecer en uno de esos cómics que comúnmente se conocen como “What If” o ¿Qué pasaría si?
