[Very Top] Five of the best 2D fighting arcades

The art of slapping each other has undoubtedly given rise to true gems in this passionate hobby we have here. That's why today we wanted to remember five of the best 2D fighting arcades that we have had the privilege of enjoying. Let's fight!

Garou: Mark of the Wolves

We begin in a rigorous alphabetical order withthe most spectacular installment of the sagaFatal Fury(Garou Densetsuin his native Japan). This series of SNK fighting games was created by Takashi Nishiyama, one of the creators of the first and legendaryStreet Fighter. Well, its latest delivery in 2Dwas calledGarou: Mark of the Wolvesand it's quite a spectacle.

Launched in 2000 by SNK itself for arcades and Neo Geo systems,Garou: Mark of the Wolvesbrings back the legendary Terry Bogard andrenews practically the entire roster of fighters. It also moves away from the control system of previous games, abandoning the two levels of combat that were a bit of a trademark.

Herethe fights are more agile, everything working perfectly, as if it were a Swiss watch. The combos take on greater prominence and, together with the fantastic animations of the fighters, a truly spectacular gameplay is achieved. With all this, mixed withone of the most overwhelming technical sections that can be remembered in a Neo Geo system,Garou: Mark of theWolves is without a doubt one of the best fighting games of all time.

But where can we play this wonder? In addition to arcades and the Neo Geo console, it was also released on systems such as Dreamcast or PlayStation 2, but to avoid spending an arm and a leg you can go for downloadable versions on Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

The King of Fighters 98: The Slugfest

The truth is that I hesitated between this and the 1997 edition, but I finally decided onone of the most complete and fun installments of the sagaThe King of Fighters. It is aboutThe King of Fighters 98: The Slugfest, which appeared, evidently, in 1998 for arcades and Neo Geo systems.

SNK's classic 3v3 fighting game, whichmixes fighters from mythical franchises likeFatal Fury,Art of FightingeitherIkari Warriors, had in this installment a brutal selection of characters. 38 characters will face each other, with people like Kyo or Iori at the top, with one of the best control systems in memory.

Mythical combats and impossible combos come together inThe King of Fighters 98: The Slugfest, which is alsoone of the peaks of the saga on a technical levelin its time on the Neo Geo arcade boards. A catch? The game abandons its narrative character a bit to focus on an "all-star" fighter and, especially, its multiplayer aspect, but we forgive it for that.

The original can be played on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch today, but there is also a version with the taglineUltimate Matchavailable on systems such as PC or PlayStation 4.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2

More team fights, but this time from Capcom.One of the most interesting crossovers of all time isMarvel vs. Capcom, and its second installment,Marvel vs. Capcom 2, released in 2000 for arcades, is undoubtedly the winner.

This mix of Capcom characters with Marvel heroes is crazy wonderful. In this sequel we will have no more and no less than 44 characters at our disposal, forming teams of three very diverse fighters.Ryu, Wolverine and Spider-Man on the same team?Well, here you have it, performing spectacular combinations of special blows, with agile gameplay and hilarious combat.

Special mention to its technical section. At a time when 2D fighting games were giving way to 3D ones,Marvel vs. Capcom 2 dared to combine pixelated fighters with 3D backgrounds, todo con una maestría asombrosa, digna de la mejor Capcom de la historia. Geniales animaciones y un colorido tremendo ponen la guinda al pastel.

En su día estuvo disponible en Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 y Xbox, pero luego salió para descargarse en PlayStation 3 y Xbox 360. Si lo tienes en alguno de estos sistemas genial, pues poder disfrutar de esta joya hoy en día es un poco difícil si no tiramos de emulación.

Mortal Kombat II

Vamos con un poquito más de violencia y sangre, la de la siempre polémica serieMortal Kombat. Si el primer juego causó sensación, su secuela lo elevó todo a la enésima potencia.1993 fue el año elegido por Midway para lanzarMortal Kombat IIen los arcades, pero pronto emigró a sistemas domésticos, logrando un éxito considerable.

Los doce luchadores pueden parecer pocos para los estándares de hoy en día, pero en 1993 eran más que suficientes. ¡Y menudos personajes! Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang o Kitana son algunos de los elementos que luchan a muerte en este juego.A los desproporcionados «fatalities», seña de identidad de la saga, se les unían los divertidos «babalities» o los «friendship», dando un toque simpático a tanta violencia desmedida.

Pero seamos sinceros. La extrema violencia deMortal Kombat IIera solo la excusa morbosa para echar unas partidas.En su interior guarda un sistema de combate único, rico en movimientos especiales y con un montón de opciones y secretos en su interior. Además,la historia está muy currada.

No existió sistema doméstico que no contara con su correspondiente ración de este fabuloso arcade, pero jugarlo hoy en día es más difícil.Mortal Kombat IIestá disponible en su versión PC en plataformas de descarga, pero en consolas lo más reciente data de 2011 conMortal Kombat Arcade Kollectionpara Playstation 3 y Xbox 360 (y PC, por supuesto), así que será complicadillo hacerse con él.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo

Y terminamos con mi saga favorita:Street Fighter.Street Fighter IIsupuso un antes y un después en los juegos de lucha, pero con el tiempo la fórmula se fue perfeccionando hasta llegar aSuper Street Fighter II Turbo,el culmen de la segunda entrega de la serie. Fue creado por Capcom y lanzado en 1994 para las salas del vicio y el humo.

Super Street Fighter II Turboera la entrega más completa que existía en su día. 16 luchadores, un buen puñado de técnicas especiales, combos especiales y un luchador secreto llamado Akuma. ¿Se podía pedir más? Imposible. Jugar con Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li o alguno de los recién llegados como Cammy o Dee Jay es toda una gozada. Todo es un ballet brutalmente orquestado en el que la jugabilidad y la diversión lo inundan todo. Eso sí,quizá sea elStreet Fightermás difícil de su especie.

Gráficos coloridos con un pixel art icónico que lo envuelve todo. Esto, unido a unos efectos sonoros contundentes y a una de las bandas sonoras más icónicas de todos los tiempos, con melodías que se seguirán tarareando durante años, consiguen crear uno de los juegos de lucha más memorables de la historia. Y es que, amigas y amigos,Super Street Fighter II Turbo es una obra maestra se mire por dónde se mire.

Al margen de la recreativa, pocos sistemas albergaron este juego en su momento, destacando a una más que notable versión para PC. Hoy en día tenemos recopilatorios de todo tipo para disfrutar de esta maravillosa obra de Capcom que ningún fan de la lucha debería perderse.
