[Very Top] Five graphic novels by Paco Roca

In recent years, the world of comics and Spanish graphic novels has seen a boom, and, among all the authors, one of the most prominent is the ValencianPaco Roca. Since it began its journey in this world just over two decades ago, Paco Roca has done nothing but achieve success, and it is not surprising that four of his works have already been brought to the screen (Wrinkles, 2011. Memoirs of a man in pajamas, 2018. fortune, 2021. the house, 2022). Although he began with erotic comics for various magazines, he would soon make the leap to comics, publishing in France in 2001. It was there where he would publish Wrinkles in 2007 and thanks to the success obtained, he made a place for himself in the world of comics, from which he has not moved.

RETURN TO EDEN

Although he touches on diverse topics, Paco Roca is famous thanks to his historical and everyday works. And it's just both issues that it focuses on. Return to Eden.

This work born from a 1946 photograph on the beach of Nazareth, Valencia. It is one of three photos that he keeps from his maternal grandmother and, thanks to her, she is going to tell us about the life of this humble family in the middle of the postwar period.

We will see them go through misery, shop on the black market, suffer. All this focused on the women of the house, who endure everything and can't say anything. It is a story about them: about what they were denied, what was expected of them, what they could or could not do.

But it is also an ode to memory, to our ancestors. The story begins in nothing, in our fleeting time in this world, where memories are the most important thing. Thus, while he shows us the history of his family, we see old photographs that take us even further to a bygone era.

With his characteristic style of simple lines and colors, he perfectly conveys the emotions, not only of his family, but of the majority in that period of our history. And this is what has made Paco Roca the great author that he is: with simple and traditional stories, with ordinary characters, makes you come to love and empathize with each and every one of them, and turns the simplest story into something extraordinary.

THE LIGHTHOUSE

The first time I read something by Paco Roca was The Lighthouse. I don't remember how or why I ended up with a copy of this graphic novel, but I am extremely grateful for having discovered this author, whom I have followed since 2009.

It was in that year when a new version of The lighthouse. The first time it saw the light would be in 2005, but for this time some dialogue, vignettes and the cover changed. It will be the third comic he publishes and the first to show us that style that characterizes him. Simple drawing and flat colors but with an immense narrative force.

The story follows Francisco, a young republican soldier who, fleeing the horror of war, arrives at a lighthouse. There he will meet Telmo, the old lighthouse keeper who shows him a world of freedom and imagination. through the classics Sinbad, Ulysses or Gulliver. A whole series of references including Don Quixote, since Telmo is nothing more than a man moved by the illusion of classic stories waiting for his adventure, not in La Mancha but at sea. And little by little he will envelop Francisco in his fantasy world.

Even though we are in the middle of a civil war, the plot does not revolve around it.. Just enough to put us in the situation. There is talk of war, yes, but it could be any war. We really only need that data to know about the protagonist. Nothing else.

The lighthouse is designed with only three colors: black, white and blue-gray: the color of the sea that will guide us through all feelings throughout history.

As Paco Roca always does, an a priori simple story, with only two characters, that hides much more: in every shot, in every dialogue, in every reference. Without a doubt, a wonderful comic.

WRINKLES

Without a doubt talk about Wrinkles, es hablar de la obra culmen de Paco Roca. Allá por 2007 publicaría en Francia dicha novela gráfica, la cual tuvo un éxito rotundo. Y no es de extrañar. En noviembre de ese mismo año se publicaría en España y, en 2008, en Italia. Llegaría a varios países más como Alemania, Finlandia, Japón y Holanda.

Tal fue el éxito abrumador que, en 2011, se llevaría a la gran pantalla de la mano de la productora coruñesa Perro Verde Films. Por supuesto, estuvo nominada a los Goya de mejor película de animación y mejor guión adaptado, y fue preseleccionada para los Óscar.

Pero ¿qué hace que Arrugas guste tanto? Estamos ante un relato sobre el Alzheimer. Su protagonista es Emilio, un anciano que padece esa enfermedad y debe vivir en una residencia donde conocerá a variopintos personajes.

Con tal trama, se puede llegar a pensar que es un auténtico drama de lágrima fácil. Nada más lejos de la realidad. Entramos de lleno en un relato que nos sumerge en la vida de Emilio y nos muestra cómo la enfermedad va y viene por medio de unas viñetas perfectamente construidas, que van del pasado al presente de los personajes, haciendo de la narración algo ameno.

Pero, por supuesto, no todo gira en torno al alzheimer. Es una historia sobre la vejez, sobre los ancianos y la soledad a la que la mayoría tienen que hacer frente. Pero, sobre todo, es un canto a la vida, no querer rendirse y seguir luchando.

THE ABYSS OF FORGOTTEN

Diciembre de 2023 nos trajo la última novela gráfica de Paco Roca: El abismo del olvido.

Como ya hemos visto, un tema recurrente en su obra es la guerra civil y posguerra. Esta vez junto al periodista Rodrigo Terrasa nos llevan a un viaje entre el pasado y el presente de aquellas personas que desean encontrar a sus seres queridos en las fosas comunes. El eje principal es Pepica, una anciana que quiere recuperar y dar correcta sepultura a su padre José Celda, fusilado en 1940 junto a diez hombres más en Paterna, Valencia. Ella será última persona en conseguir una subvención para poder desenterrar a su padre. Con ella y los arqueólogos encargados de la fosa común 126, iremos conociendo no sólo a otros de los fusilados, sino el gran trabajo del sepulturero Leoncio Badía, quién daba a todas las viudas trozos de ropa o incluso pelo, como en el caso de José Celda, de todos los fusilados y, sin saberlo, setenta años después ello ayudaría a los arqueólogos a identificar algunos cuerpos.

Al igual que en sus últimos trabajos, hablamos de una historia real, con personajes reales. Rodrigo Terrasa es quien inicia esta historia por 2013, cuando entrevista a Pepica para el periódico El Mundo. Años mas tarde habla con Paco Roca para llevar a cabo la novela gráfica de la odisea de la mujer para enterrar con dignidad a su padre.

Gracias a la gran labor de investigación de Rodrigo Terrasa y, como es costumbre, la magistral manera de Paco Roca de llevar la historia, con su ya habitual sencilla paleta de colores, cada página es una torbellino de sensaciones y testimonios desgarradores.

Para acabar, permitidme haceros un pequeño spoiler: Al igual que algunos restos no pudieron ser identificados hay otros que sí lo fueron pero que no quedan familiares vivos que les reclamen y que por desgracia, volvieron a la fosa. Así pues Paco Roca decide no dibujar a Manuel Gimeno Ballester y poner su foto (última imagen del post), ya que, al fin y al cabo, esta novela gráfica no solo va de quienes luchan para recuperar a sus familiares, sino de todos aquellos que se encuentran en esas fosas. Para que nunca caigan en el olvido.

THE HOUSE

Este año the house de Paco Roca vuelve a estar en boca de todos gracias a la película homónima de Alex Montoya basada en la novela gráfica del valenciano.

Como es habitual en Paco Roca, nos lleva por un relato costumbrista y cercano donde nos habla, entre pasado y presente, de tres hermanos que se juntan para limpiar y vender la casa de su padre tras su fallecimiento. A través de ellos tres, veremos la relación entre ellos, así como con el padre.

De forma sencilla y con unos diálogos muy bien construidos, nos meternos de lleno en esta familia, que bien podría ser la nuestra propia. Cosa que, como ya hemos visto, Paco roca hace perfectamente bien en todas y cada una de sus historias. No sólo consigue que empaticemos con todos los personajes, sino que nos ofrece una historia, a priori simple, pero que oculta mucho más.

Una obra que habla de la vida y la muerte, que nos propone empatizar con nuestros congéneres y ser, al fin y al cabo, mejores personas.
