[Meeting…] Bebop and Rocksteady

After meeting many solo characters and a group of flash enemies, the time has come to talk about a duo in this section.

Although it is true that it would be more logical to talk about other more popular ones such as Batman and Robin, Asterix and Obélix or Mortadelo and Filemón, I have decided that the first couple are Bebop the wild boar and Rocksteady the rhinoceros, two characters who achieved world fame at the same time as their main enemies, the Ninja Turtles.

From the toy store to the television

Many of the characters in Ninja Turtles underwent changes in their transition from comics to television, as I explained in the rat king article. However, Bebop and Rocksteady did not have that problem, since they did not appear in the original Turtle comics, as they were created directly for the television series based on some designs that Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman (creators of Ninja Turtles) made for the characters' toy line.

These designs passed through the hands of those responsible for the first animated series of the turtles and ended up resulting in two mutants as strong as they were stupid, who completed the familiar picture of the main enemies of the series that made us laugh so many times.

The hard life of the mutant gang member

The little data we have about the origin of these characters goes back to the first episode of the animated series, where some gang members harass and chase reporter April O'Neil, who will end up being saved by the four mutant turtles, who defeat the gang members for the first time.

Within this gang of criminals we have a blonde guy dressed in military clothing and another with black skin with a clear Punk aesthetic, who will end up being “recruited” by Shredder (also known as Destroyer or Shredder), who will test the wonderful qualities of mutagen on both criminals, giving them the appearance for which everyone knows them.

Turned into a wild boar and a rhinoceros, Bebop and Rocksteady manage to take revenge on the turtles, in fact each of them is capable of defeating and immobilizing two turtles (one in each hand) showing that in their new form both criminals are a very serious danger to the protagonists of the series. Unfortunately, after that chapter both characters seem to gradually become idiotic and weaken, until they become the laughingstock that we all remember with some affection.

No explanation is given for this event, we might think that it is because the turtles have trained hard, but I fear that we are simply faced with one more case of what I call "new character syndrome"This syndrome is very common and consists of the characters who appear for the first time being much more fearsome, stronger and more dangerous than on all subsequent occasions, as if the surprise factor gave them a first victory that they will never achieve again no matter how hard they try.

Be that as it may, these characters were very well received by the audience of the series, which led to the creation of chapters focused on this pair of louts, such as one in which they have to hide their pet (a fish tank turtle) from Shredder or the chapter in which robotic copies of them are created, giving the birth of two more characters (and toys): Super Rocksteady and Mighty Bebop.

Beyond the animated series, both characters were present in practically all Ninja Turtles products: books, video games, toys or the Japanese OVAs of the Ninja Turtles, where they went from their classic form to a much more "threatening" form (at the same time that the Turtles mutated into something similar to a superhero with armor like Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac)

And they came to the comic

At the same time that the television series created the turtlemania, Archie Comics published Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures, a series of comics with stories that started out being identical to the chapters of the series and ended up showing totally different and even better stories than those of said series. It was inevitable, then, that Bebop and Rocksteady would appear for the first time “on paper” doing their job as clumsy oafs in the service of Shredder.

En esa misma época, las tortugas dieron el salto al cine, con una película que mezclaba a los personajes del cómic original con la famosa serie de animación, y poco más tarde se lanzó una secuela de ese film, donde vimos la creación de Tokka (la tortuga) y Rahzar (el lobo) que cumplían exactamente el mismo papel que el jabalí y el rinoceronte de la serie, lo cual nos llevó a preguntarnos ¿Por qué no utilizaron a Bebop y a Rocksteady?

Nunca estaremos seguros del porqué, pero es cierto que los creadores de las tortugas Ninja (Peter Laird y Kevin Eastman) en aquellos momentos no estaban muy contentos con la serie de animación y puede que tuviesen algo que ver con la decisión de introducir personajes nuevos en lugar de utilizar los de dicha serie, que si bien había dado fama mundial a las tortugas, también las había ridiculizado en exceso, alejándolas de su forma original.

A principios del año 2000 se inició una segunda serie de animación que tenía como propósito parecerse lo más posible a la obra original de Eastman y Laird, objetivo que cumplió durante los primeros episodios (salvo por algunos elementos que tuvieron que censurarse). En dicha serie no parecía haber lugar para Bebop ni para Rocksteady, aunque en las últimas temporadas se les hicieron algunos homenajes muy puntuales, pero ambos personajes nunca llegaron a aparecer oficialmente.

Turtles Forever, IDW, Nickelodeon… The Return!

Pasó el tiempo y las Tortugas Ninja cumplieron 25 años, fecha para la cual se creó una película que recuperaría los más significativo de toda la franquicia, dando como resultado una mezcla de las dos series de animación, así como unos claros homenajes a las tortugas del cómic original y a algunos personajes de las películas de imagen real.

Siendo dos de los personajes más queridos por los fans de las tortugas, el regreso de Bebop y Rocksteady era inevitable. Volveríamos a verlos al mando de un ejército de soldados robots del Clan del Pie, obedeciendo a la versión de la serie de 2003 de Shredder y por supuesto, siendo tan torpes y disfuncionales como siempre.

El regreso de Bebop y Rocksteady, así como de las tortugas de los años 90 supuso un nuevo impulso a la franquicia, que años más tarde vio como el sello IDW Publishing creaba nuevos cómics con los personajes y Nickelodeon daba vida a una nueva serie de animación.

Los cómics de IDW crearon un nuevo inicio de la serie, mezclando todo lo que existía hasta el momento en el mundo de las tortugas, de manera que en una misma historia nos encontraríamos personajes provenientes de los cómics originales y de las series de animación, dicho de otro modo: Bebop y Rocksteady volvían a la actualidad.

Su nuevo origen era muy similar a lo visto en la serie que los vio nacer, ambos eran delincuentes humanos que acabaron siendo mutados en animales y uniéndose al Clan del Pie. La camaradería entre ambos personajes se mantuvo, así como su partícular humor infantiloide, pero su peligrosidad y violencia se aumentó acorde con el tono de los cómics, dando una versión más equilibrada de ambos personajes, que no dudan en enfrentarse a quien sea siempre que estén juntos (lo cual nos llevó a ver el espectacular combate entre ambos y la enorme tortuga mutante Slash).

La serie de animación de Nickelodeon tomó un camino similar a los cómics de IDW, mezclando todos los personajes que existían en el universo tortuga, al mismo tiempo que creaba muchos nuevos, como los secuaces de Shredder: Fishface y Dogpound, personajes que ocuparon el puesto que “pertenecía” a Bebop y Rocksteady.

A partir de la segunda temporada el número de mutantes en la serie empezó a multiplicarse de manera exagerada, recuperando algunos personajes de la serie de animación de los 90, como Mutagen-man, lo cual era la antesala de algo que todos los fans de las tortugas podíamos adivinar: Bebop y Rocksteady iban a volver al medio que los vio nacer, aunque en esta ocasión su  origen será algo distinto, pues Bebop resulta ser un experto ladrón y Rocksteady un coleccionista de elementos militares. Obviamente ambos acabarán mutando en los animales que todos conocemos.

Conclusion and Recommendations

Bebop y Rocksteady son dos personajes tremendamente estúpidos pero se hacen querer. Cuando veía la serie de animación de los 90, no podía dejar de interpretar que Krang y Shredder eran como un matrimonio y estos dos mutantes eran sus estúpidos hijos (metafóricamente hablando) lo cual provocaba muchas escenas tremendamente divertidas.

Me pareció mal que se excluyese a Bebop  y Rocksteady de la serie de 2003, pero creo que actualmente han salido ganando con su aparición en los cómics de IDW y la serie de Nickelodeon (aunque todavía no he visto los capítulos donde aparecen).

Las recomendaciones sobre estos personajes son muy fáciles, primero la serie de animación de los 90, luego la película Turtles Forever (puede ser encontrada en youtube con subtítulos al castellano) y si lo que queréis es verlos en papel, recurrid a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures y sobre todo a la serie nueva de IDW, donde incluso tienen un número dedicado exclusivamente a ellos: TMNT Villains Micro-series # 7.
