[Meeting…] Black Arrow

If there is a recurring scenario in which the adventures of Spanish comics were set during the years of Franco's rule, it is the medieval one, and preferably during the time of the crusades. Although each in their own style, we already saw how two of the most iconic series of the time were developed in this period. I talk about The Mask Warrior and Captain Thunder(which I tried throughGoliath). Although its duration was very long, with more than six hundred issues each, it did not necessarily have to be that way. There were other very similar series that had many fewer chapters and, therefore, were less known. One of them was Black Arrow from Boixcar (author of the renowned series War Exploits), as we will see below.

A Spanish-style Robin Hood

Sergio He is a young Englishman with a mustache and goatee and medium-length brunette hair in the style of the time. Son of the Baron of Firestop, he was in love with Annelora. This love was reciprocated, and was fostered by the excellent relations that his father had with the kind Earl of Courtney, progenitor of his beloved. They used to take walks in the fields around Hamshireblood Castle guarded by John “Ten Arrows” (so nicknamed because "such was the number of those he carried in his quiver", and that at first it was mistakenly written as "John").

Everything would go wrong when, in 1190, Richard the Lionheart marched on the Third Crusade and his brother's conspiracies began Juan Sin Tierra. Desiring to gain followers who would support him in the usurpation of the throne of England, he did not hesitate to tempt Godfrey, intendant of Hamshireblood Castle and the earl's trusted man, under the promise of handing over the county to him (since his legitimate lord had departed along with Richard, as well as the Baron of Firestop). This one didn't take long and He took over the lands, which he would govern tyrannically, and shortly after he took over Firestop Castle. despite the bitter resistance led by Sergio himself. As a consequence, our protagonist was forced to take refuge in the woods along with Annelora, John and the survivors of the siege, as well as other men who joined him later, with whom he would prepare for the resistance.

As we can see, although the title seems to suggest some type of inspiration with the work of Robert Louis Stevenson (The Black Arrow, 1888), in fact the argument up to this point is practically a carbon copy of the story of Robin Hood (He even intercepts a treasure that he distributes to the poor). As if those weren't enough similarities, His clothing also reminds us of that legendary character, dressed in a simple tunic, leggings, boots and, above all, his famous hat topped with a feather (although he only wears it during the first three issues). This is completed by excellent command of the bow, although with the peculiarity that it usually shoot black arrows. The first is a warning (and may carry a message), while the second is going to kill. It is as a result of this when He began to be nicknamed Black Arrow..

From arrows to hand-to-hand combat

Now, this concept of “Robbin Hood by another name” was never very consistent and, in any case, it did not last long. During the first issues in which he earned the pseudonym Black Arrow, he used these only a couple of times, and Very soon they completely disappeared from their repertoire of combat resources in favor of hand-to-hand combat.. De hecho, usaba la espada por defecto siempre que podía y, en caso de que se la arrebatasen o la extraviase, recurría a sus puños desnudos, con los que no era menos diestro.

Así, se convirtió en una variante más del típico héroe del cómic español de la Edad de Oro, que tenía a El Guerrero del Antifaz como máximo exponente: un guerrero de fortaleza y agilidad inigualable capaz de vencer sin ayuda tanto a grandes grupos de enemigos como a los contrincantes más poderosos. Eso sin olvidar la consabida caballerosidad con las damas, su inclinación natural a hacer el bien y su fervor religioso, en el que no profundizaré mucho por haberlo tratado en otros artículos. Eso sí, aunque evitaba matar en la medida de lo posible (especialmente si el enemigo estaba desarmado e indefenso), no le temblaba el pulso a la hora de acabar con la vida sus adversarios más viles ni a dar rienda suelta a sus sentimientos vengativos.

Con todo, Flecha Negra no luchaba en solitario. Desde el primer momento contó con el apoyo de John Diez Flechas, un hombre corpulento de fuerza colosal (fue capaz de arrancar un árbol de cuajo y usarlo como arma frente a una multitud de soldados). Aunque está inspirado directamente en el Little John de la historia de Robin Hood, esas características, sumadas a sus maneras toscas y su humor directo y socarrón, su risa sonora y ciertas expresiones recurrentes (emplea mucho la exclamación “¡rayos!”) nos recuerda en gran medida a Goliath, el titánico compañero de El Capitán Trueno, que no parecería hasta siete años después. Incluso llega a usar en una viñeta la técnica del “cascanueces” que le hizo tan famoso (chocar las cabezas de dos enemigos). También contaría con la ayuda de José (un muchacho de catorce años de una fuerza inconmensurable para su edad), el misterioso Penacho Negro (un guerrero que oculta su personalidad bajo un yelmo negro) y el pirata Gondar entre otros.

Conclusion and recommendations

Flecha Negra, alias de Sergio, es hijo del barón de Firestop y prometido de Annelora. Cuando Godofredo traicionó al ausente conde de Courtney y tomó tanto el castillo de éste como el de su padre, reunió a un grupo de rebeldes en el bosque para hacerle frente. Destaca por todas las virtudes de las cómics de aventuras medievales tratados hasta la fecha, siendo su apodo algo que ponto perderá sentido.

Como dije al principio del artículo, serie Flecha Negra es mucho más corta que sus homólogas más famosas. De hecho sólo cuenta con 23 capítulos. Además de ser menos tedioso al carecer de arcos argumentales insustanciales para el desarrollo general de la trama, cuenta con la ventaja de que a la censura no le dio tiempo de suprimir las partes consideradas más violentas, con el consiguiente proceso de infantilización que experimentaron algunas de las más extensas. Cabe destacar que cuenta con muchos elementos de El Guerrero del Antifaz (los atributos del héroe ya expuestos, un joven acompañante que quedó huérfano, un pirata redimido, un tono relativamente violento y oscuro, etc.), aunque también con un escudero forzudo que podría considerarse precursor de Goliath. Es más, uno de los villanos se hace llamar “Capitán Trueno”. No deja de ser una simple anécdota porque es bastante secundario (no tarda en ser liquidado), pero en todo caso es curioso. No sé si Ambrós habrá tomado algo de inspiración en este cómic.

La única forma de leer los 23 volúmenes (publicados por Toray) es tener suerte y encontrarlos en algún sitio de compraventa de cómics de segunda mano o leyéndolos en las webs de tebeos clásicos de dominio público. Esta serie cuenta con la ventaja de poder leída íntegramente, algo de lo que no se pueden jactar otras.
